There have been more and more posts popping up as of late praising different players and how their potential achievements. Sure, they might have talent, but they also haven't proven that they have the longevity, the skill or consistency to win what is expected of them. Without further ado I present the most overrated players I have seen hyped on this forum:

1) Juan Martin Del Potro

THE most overrated player of all time. Sure, beating Nadal and Federer in a slam is a huge achievement. So was his US Open title, which he confessed was his most wanted slam. But let's face the facts. The guy is a ball basher with no plan B. No doubt he has done well to win his first slam, let's not take it away from him, BUT - is he really the future of tennis as some proclaim him to be?

The answer to that is a firm NO. Players like him have no consistency, too injury prone and really need to catch fire to beat more consistent players. I have seen Del Potro proclaimed as the next best thing, when in reality he is a clown on natural surfaces (grass, clay) and only decent on slower hard courts. It's extremely doubtful he will ever be successful outside of New York. Let's not forget his wrist injury. I doubt he will ever be the same player ever again when he comes back. For all we know he will be another one slam wonder who's had a lucky run when real top players were slumping.

2) Gulbis

Another VERY overrated player. The Gulbis-mania commenced when he beat clown-mode Federer on clay in Rome, almost choking several times during the match. The hype has reached epic proportions when he took a set off Nadal on clay. Did he back up his success? Once again NO. Another injury prone, tall ball basher. He failed in RG, pulled out of Wimbledon and even now continues losing to mugs on a surface that theoretically should favor him.

People claiming that he is a "dark horse" for USO are truly delusional IMO. He won't last past the second round.

3) Murray

I actually enjoy his playstyle on the rare occasion when he forces himself to attack. But he does it so rarely. Really, Murray has been hyped into another dimension as a multi-slam winner and a challenger to Nadal and Federer domination. So far he hasn't lived up to his expectations. He was defeated in slams by Nadal on grass and by Federer on hard. His mental strength seems to be almost at the limit - his title drought is almost 9 months and he can't even win MM titles anymore, even though he desparatly wants to win one. Has Murray lived up to his expectations? I'd say NO.

4) Soderling

Another overrated ball basher, who was supposed to be some sort of new King of Clay in 2009. Has he backed up his results with further titles? NO! The guy can't even beat Almagro with crowd supporting him! He pulled out an upset of the history by playing tennis of his career against injured Nadal and he was touted as next slam winner? So far he disappointed. Not only has he lost to diabolically badly playing Federer in 2009, he was also thrashed by Nadal in 2010 RG, proving that his win in 2009 was lucky. He was also hyped beyond belief in Wimbledon, only to recieve a brutal beating once again. Right now he's Nadal's pigeon when he was hyped as Nadal destroyer.

5) Djokovic

I was actually hesitant to put him on the list as he has been sucking lately, but still. After he has won his 2008 AO he has failed miserably. Everyone claimed he was the next big thing, potential CYGS winner. What happened? He got a straight set beating in RG - supposedly at his peak and failed to show up at a slam final ever since. Sure, he can make excuses about his fiteness - the fact remains, Djokovic has disappoined after his 2008 run and was severely overrated by many people. The highlight of this is RG 2010 when he miserably lost to Melzer after being 2 sets and a break up. In my opinion the chances of Djokovic winning another slam are slim to nil.

I say Murray. Everytime a GS rolls around, a bunch of people say he;s the favourite. Then he gets a straight set beat down and they pick him as favourite for the next one.

It has to be Gulbis. All of the other guys you mentioned have at least made slam finals. Gulbis has one title, and it was a 250 event. And this guy supposedly has top 5 potential? Give me a break...

I'd say Murray. He's got no game at all to win a GS.Gulbis should not even be there, because He is nothing compared with the others in terms of results, however I had been a fan of Gulbis since the US Open(2007 I think) when He destroyed Robredo the year after He could have beaten Roddick, but got intimidated by Roddick trying to hit the ball at him a couple of times and staring at him.

I agree with Everything except Soderling and Djojovic.

The way gulbis playing right now...I don't think he is capable of playing the US open! Del Potro Injured, Murray is too pushy.

Soderling however...is looking like a consistent top tenner...maybe he won't win a slam...at least he has 2 slam finals and maybe could fet to another final.

Djokovic is a contender but never plays up to his bidding...has the tools but somehow fails....but I would never count the guy out!

Del Potro overrated?
You don't know a thing about tennis then.

What has he done except his USO title? His W/L record is crappy, he hasn't got a single Masters 1000 title, he only has 7 MM titles to his name. Just because he got hot for a very short period, doesn't mean anything until he shows consistency, makes more slam finals, wins a lot more titles and doesn't get injured every 5 minutes.

To me he's a ball basher just like Soderling and Berdych, only mentally tougher.

Come on lady,He is only 21 and right after the US Open He got injured and hasn't played more than 2 tournaments for a year-long without retiring and was playing injured. He is the one the has 80% of upside to be better,in every single area of the his game.Who can improve that much?If He hadn't injured himself He would at least number 2 this year and the season would have been totally different.

Nalbandian. All he does is destroy a moonballer and people are all goo goo over him. lol and that moonballer winning on flawed surfaces is a little overrated as well. ;)

Not really, Nadal was badly injured in that match, Del Potro was lucky. I look forward to haters making excuses when Del Potro comes back and gets crushed by healthy Nadal.

yes, nadal who played montreal and cincy ( reaching QF and SF ) was badly injured and got crushed by del potro. But would be so terrific of rafa to get back at a del potro who hasn't played a match for nearly 8 months

only nadal's serving was affected by his stomach injury - its anyways not a great weapon in HC, plus del potro was winning more than 50% of the longer rallies , killing nadal from the baseline .

Even though I enjoy watching his matches, I went with Gulbis. He can beat anyone, but usually just loses to everyone.:???:

Gulbis is the most overrated of all of these. Only past the 2nd round of a major twice in 13 appearances. Only past the 2nd round of a Masters 3 times in 16 appearances. 2nd round...people pass the 2nd round in their sleep. When you look at the resume and compare it with the hype, it's not even close to the others who have at least been top 10 and made impacts in majors.

Why is it that the dumbest posters end up posting more than anyone else?

Are you high have you ever seen JMDP play?
No Cosistency? Really?

This has to be one of the most fail threads I have seen last month. I only agree with Gulbis, don't get the hype around him.

Anyway, the most overrated player right now has to be Henin - at least since she began playing again. Same for every WTA tour player who makes a comeback, except for Clijsters.

You are really stupid if you think that, she didn't play tennis for about 18 months, come backs are hard, any pro player would struggle like Serena in 2006 for example. You usually need 6 months at least to find your old game. Clijsters had a fluke run, she isn't making it far this year.

What do you think is more stupid? Saying Del Potro is overrated or saying Henin is overrated?

For anyone, that would be an easy choice, ya know.

 @ this del potro bashing... and how can söderling be overrated? everyone seems to be always almost laughing at him

1. Justine Henin- so much for her coming back and taking over the WTA tour.

2. David Nalbandian- very talented but overpraised for a guy with no slam finals since 2002.

3. Richard Gasquet- he is not as talented as people think he is.

4. Roger Federer- just because he is not the consensus GOAT that is made out to be IMHO.

5. Maria Sharapova- why is she still a bookies favorite to win every slam when she is getting crushed by most of the top 20.

Roddick should be in the poll

Why? I haven't seen too many people, except die hard fans, claim he was going to win a slam recently. Plus, he was a few points away from winning Wimbledon last year and reached final before, so he was third favorite behind Fed/Nadal, which is fair. I also don't see anyone giving him chance to win USO.

How's she overrated? Everyone here hates her apart from 2-3 people. She was obviously favorite for RG, which is 100% fair, but got sick and then later injured in Wimbledon, otherwise she'd reach final there.

Compared that to Del Potro who is being paraded like some kind of Fedal destroyer even though he had one good run and has done absolutely nothing prior to that. The guy can only play on decoturf and already some clowns are suggesting he can be a threat on clay and grass. When he comes back and starts winning everything in sight, then I will change my mind - until then, he is a lucky one slam wonder, even Djoker has done 100 times more at this point.

OP, every player eventually gets a world class beating. Nadal got one at the hands of Del Potro at the US Open. Don't worry about it so much, let the hatred go, and enjoy your favorites.

i'm sorry but i was under the impression that everyone here loved her except for a few vocal haters, as per you claim in a recent thread...

lets see if i can find it...

here it is....

please refer to my reason for editing to find reasons for this post...

Reread the post:

Here is what I wrote:

Everyone here hates her.

Doesn't equal to her not having many fans.

Understand? This board has/had many vocal Henin haters (quite a few got banned btw) - but outside this forum she has ton of fans. Nowhere did I say that she is loved HERE (aka this forum).

Gulbis by far, he turns up when he wants and did well in those two masters series events in Rome and Madrid and then jst got injured and havn't heard nothing from him since, hate his attitude towards the sport as well.

None of the players listed are overrated. They receive the correct amount of praise/criticism due them based on their games. Strong players but not yet considered great.

Some people are absolutely deluded. Murray is not overrated, no where near it. He's just turning into a bit of an underachiever at the minute.

The most overrated players are always the Americans, with Andy Roddick being the extremity. Ordinary in almost every sense of the word.

There is no such thing as an overrated professional tennis player. A tennis player's rating is his computerized ranking which exactly reflects his performance on the court.
