There have been more and more posts popping up as of late praising different players and how their potential achievements. Sure, they might have talent, but they also haven't proven that they have the longevity, the skill or consistency to win what is expected of them. Without further ado I present the most overrated players I have seen hyped on this forum:
1) Juan Martin Del Potro
THE most overrated player of all time. Sure, beating Nadal and Federer in a slam is a huge achievement. So was his US Open title, which he confessed was his most wanted slam. But let's face the facts. The guy is a ball basher with no plan B. No doubt he has done well to win his first slam, let's not take it away from him, BUT - is he really the future of tennis as some proclaim him to be?
The answer to that is a firm NO. Players like him have no consistency, too injury prone and really need to catch fire to beat more consistent players. I have seen Del Potro proclaimed as the next best thing, when in reality he is a clown on natural surfaces (grass, clay) and only decent on slower hard courts. It's extremely doubtful he will ever be successful outside of New York. Let's not forget his wrist injury. I doubt he will ever be the same player ever again when he comes back. For all we know he will be another one slam wonder who's had a lucky run when real top players were slumping.
2) Gulbis
Another VERY overrated player. The Gulbis-mania commenced when he beat clown-mode Federer on clay in Rome, almost choking several times during the match. The hype has reached epic proportions when he took a set off Nadal on clay. Did he back up his success? Once again NO. Another injury prone, tall ball basher. He failed in RG, pulled out of Wimbledon and even now continues losing to mugs on a surface that theoretically should favor him.
People claiming that he is a "dark horse" for USO are truly delusional IMO. He won't last past the second round.
3) Murray
I actually enjoy his playstyle on the rare occasion when he forces himself to attack. But he does it so rarely. Really, Murray has been hyped into another dimension as a multi-slam winner and a challenger to Nadal and Federer domination. So far he hasn't lived up to his expectations. He was defeated in slams by Nadal on grass and by Federer on hard. His mental strength seems to be almost at the limit - his title drought is almost 9 months and he can't even win MM titles anymore, even though he desparatly wants to win one. Has Murray lived up to his expectations? I'd say NO.
4) Soderling
Another overrated ball basher, who was supposed to be some sort of new King of Clay in 2009. Has he backed up his results with further titles? NO! The guy can't even beat Almagro with crowd supporting him! He pulled out an upset of the history by playing tennis of his career against injured Nadal and he was touted as next slam winner? So far he disappointed. Not only has he lost to diabolically badly playing Federer in 2009, he was also thrashed by Nadal in 2010 RG, proving that his win in 2009 was lucky. He was also hyped beyond belief in Wimbledon, only to recieve a brutal beating once again. Right now he's Nadal's pigeon when he was hyped as Nadal destroyer.
5) Djokovic
I was actually hesitant to put him on the list as he has been sucking lately, but still. After he has won his 2008 AO he has failed miserably. Everyone claimed he was the next big thing, potential CYGS winner. What happened? He got a straight set beating in RG - supposedly at his peak and failed to show up at a slam final ever since. Sure, he can make excuses about his fiteness - the fact remains, Djokovic has disappoined after his 2008 run and was severely overrated by many people. The highlight of this is RG 2010 when he miserably lost to Melzer after being 2 sets and a break up. In my opinion the chances of Djokovic winning another slam are slim to nil.
