Most Ugliest, but effective shots on tour

Dominic Thiem has an absolute beast of backhand. But maaaaaaan it is one ugly looking shot.

What shots come to mind that are extremely effective but not easy on the eye? Past or present

Djokovic slice
Forehand - almost all the new generation and Gasquet, Sock, Paire
Raonic - every stroke
Serve - Chung, Millman
Volley - no comment as nobody volleys anymore
Backhand - most of the new generation except Titsandarse and Shapethelot
Chung serve?

It's just about the worst serve in the game.

Coolest looking shot I've ever seen.

You see that shot and you know he's like 'imma ****ing whack that ball'
One does not exclude the other. It looks strange, constrained, painful, but yeah, you get the feeling that he’s gonna whack it like it’s a Zed’s face.

Overall Murray still has the ugliest game of all time. Everything looks stiff af.

Definitely destroyed his shoulder. Such an explosive motion. That acceleration definitely is an enormous pain on that joint.

It's still mindboggling he served at 65% first serves usually. Like you can serve like that, serve harder than usual, and spray balls everywhere.

I sometimes wonder if Gasquet is trying to use the same mechanics as his backhand for his forehand.
Honestly, there's usually some kind of symmetry to the strokes. It's either all jerky/wristy/smooth whatever. Almost every player has that, as far as the major characteristics of the shot goes.

Only major exception I can think of is Kyrgios.

Nadal's FH actually doesn't look that bad. This is more evident if you flip him to be a right hander

I think for some people, it’s more like the combination of the grunting, the expression when he hits the ball and the fact he’s left-handed, that makes people think it’s an ugly shot. The shot itself really doesn’t look bad at all.

It's not that bad when he hits through it, it's when he does the full topspin stroke over his head that looks ugly.
His serve in 2010 was at its most effective, and at its ugliest.

FH: Tiafoe, no contest. WTF is that?
BH: kyrgios but Tiafoe is close too.
Slice BH: Djokovic
Volleys: not sure, I guess Djokovic
Overhead: Djokovic
Serve: Tiafoe and Chung

I know Djokovic gets flak for his slice, but it's nowhere near as weird as MuryGOAT

Finally, someone else sees it.

Rafa’s forehand is a thing of beauty, but it’s difficult to separate personal biases from facts.

Not saying that it’s a fact that Rafa’s forehand is beautiful, but rather the fact that his forehand is in all the ways that matter (fundamentally) identical to Fed’s.

So to say one is ugly is to a limited extent accepting that the other’s is too.

It’s called the reverse finish, and it’s been around since the wood era. The most recent retired ATG to have used it regularly is none other than Pete Sampras, and before him, Bjorn Borg.

All of Thiem's shots, tbh. His FH is ugly as hell, too, but very effective (much more than the BH which can be a reliability).

Even his serve (also very effective, especially on clay) and volleys look awkward somehow.

Sampras forehand and backhand. Looks like he's about to fall bakwards with the backhand, but he could still smack it down the line with serious power when his game was ON. The forehand was very ugly too. Akward, high up the shoulders, underrotated and a ton of unforced errors to boot. But a great shot when he got a good cut on it.

Why isnt Raonic not mentioned?
Somehow he has the movements of somebody chopping trees. When he is preparing to serve he holds his racquet like he is going to bake eggs in a pan. However his serve is obviously very difficult to return. Weaker returns he kills with his ugly forehand.

Good call on Raonic. All of his shots are butt ugly but effective.

Courier's backhand needs a mention...looked like he was swinging a baseball bat. Schalken serve looked bad too but he did pretty well for himself in tennis.
