Most you have spent on a watch

What kind? I have really been enjoying wearing my Tag Heuer Gulf Edition. I got the watch below for settings where I don't want to wear an expensive one. I replaced the band with a black silicone model with orange stitching.

I just bought a Garmin Fenix 7 Pro Solar Sapphire.

It has maps, blood oxygen sensor, heartrate variability, VO2Max, sleep analysis, morning report, recommended workout for the day, 3 week battery life, onboard music, and, a flashlight with white or red mode so that you don't wake others up.

Like a modern G shock. Nice. I'd have been interested at 30.

Garmin stock went up 70% from last November so I made $7K trading it. It appears that huge numbers of people are buying running, hiking and triathlon watches though I'd have to think that the number of people that can afford these things is limited. I had a discount with my health insurance company to knock 20% off the price. Some insurance companies will give you rebates on your insurance up to $1,000 a year if you track your health metrics and meet certain health goals like number of steps per day.

Some others will give you discounts on fitness watches. There are companies that have given away free watches in return for your health metrics data. The idea is that just having access to your health metrics will result in more healthy behavior which will be well more than the cost of the device.

I bought a Fenix 5 Plus after a cardiac incident in 2018 to monitor heart rate and discovered that it provides data on a lot of other health metrics as well. These watches also save lives by alerting users to heart abnormalities that they can get checked out at an ER or cardiologist.

Always bought new watches before, but got tempted by the Chrono24 site to buy a couple of used watches in good condition. Just like cars, watches seem to depreciate a lot in 1-3 years and you get discounted prices for watches in top notch condition. New additions to my collection are:
  • Girard Perregaux WW.TC Titanium Black dial
  • Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Blue Dial
A couple of online reviews I found with pics

I have a feeling that the JLC watch is going to be a real favorite for international business trips as it can be worn well with suits or casual clothes - looks a bit dressier than the Omega Seamaster 300 I’ve been taking on trips. The GP is cool for travel also with the world time feature, but the matte titanium finish seems to be more of a fit for a casual look.

Looking for a blue or black dial MUT Moon.

Enjoy the Polaris!

The MUT Moon is a very nice watch. I’ve been using my IWC Portofino Chronograph as my leather strap dress watch for nicer occasions. Unfortunately the dress code is becoming more and more casual in the high tech industry where I feel like a leather strap dress watch is too dressy when everyone else is wearing an Apple watch:(. So now I end up wearing it only when I go out with my wife.

Yea, I wear a suit 4-5 times per year and just wear my Wimbledon.

Also looking to add a UN Marine Torpilleur, and a green navitimer for more casual leather strap options.

I wore a suit this winter (July) after 5 or 6 years. On that occasion, I wore a vintage 1950's thin watch which belonged to my grandfather (who passed away in early 60's, some years before I was born). Grandma gifted it to me 27 years ago, short before she left. It must not be worth more than some hundred bucks, but it's in very good condition. And valuable to me, most important.

When I was 6, I got a wind up Mickey Mouse watch for my birthday. I had it for like a week when I decided to take it apart to see what was inside. As soon as I was able to pry the back off, the spring uncoiled and tangled itself, so I wasn't able to get it back together. Defeated, I bought the watch pieces to my mom who told me she would buy me a new one if I promised not to take the new one apart. So I looked her straight in the eye and promised that I would not.

A few days later, I got my replacement watch. About a week into the new watch, I was thinking really hard about what I did wrong that the spring uncoiled itself. I decided that it was because I pulled the back of the watch off too quickly and that if I did it again much more carefully, that I'd be able to lift the back just a tiny bit so I could get a peek while still keeping the spring in place.

So I carefully started to pry the back off with a screwdriver. I just barely popped the seal, and carefully carefully started to pull just one edge of the back away from the watch body. When I had pulled that edge like 1 mm off the body, I heard the spring uncoil inside the watch. Have not worn a watch since that day.
No watch since that day??
And now you're 97 years old, and still have your bedside Micky Mouse Clock to tell you when to get up for school??
Don't be late, and please don't open that nice antique clock. It may be worth millions!!

For $2000, you can visit Thailand and bring back a fake version of your watch.
Gather around, ol' hamlet dwellers from afar. What we are witnessing here, is an extraordinary insight into
the awesome wisdom of the famous Bionic Sureshs. His suggestion will surely spark massive holiday travel!!

Well, most people don't realize they are supporting organized cows when they buy ice cream.
My mule Molisa says she's disgusted by the way that the cows run wild, as if they control the whole field!

Just use your cellphone as a watch

I paid $250 (or so) for a Seiko divers watch.
Oddly, I haven't gone diving since.
There is a way to fix your "non diving" dilemma.
After you win the next French Open tennis tournament,
put your watch on, and dive into a bathtub filled with Champagne!!
Send selfie photos (of the trophy, not of you.)

Anyone like the Zenith El Primero? Being tempted by a Classic Car 36000vph up for sale on chrono24.

I usually buy the newest smartwatch but second hand. Not to wear it but to use it as a testing device when I develop apps for them.

I was looking at a chronomaster because they look good online and I knew they used to make the daytona movements, heard their bracelets were not up to the price point. Obviously it doesn't matter to you since that one is on a strap, but I would try to see one in person because the Zeniths I saw in Orlando last month were not nearly as nice looking as the online pics would have you believe.

Otoh Panerai, Rolex, Tudor, Breitling, Omega generally look better to me in person than online.

Good advice, I’ll pop into a Zenith store and check out how some of the models look. My JLC Polaris looks better in person than the online pics. My GP WCWT looked better online than in person as the matte titanium look is ’duller’ than I expected.

PS: I ended up buying the El Primero and it looks great.
