Moya takes a big drop.

I was looking at the new ATP Entry Rankings and since Moya was the defending champion in Rome and went out first round, his ranking has went down 6 spots to number 14. Guillermo Canas has entered the top 10 for the first time in his career and David Nalbandian has also been bumped down to number 11.

The new top 15:

1. Federer, Roger (SUI )
2. Hewitt, Lleyton (AUS )
3. Roddick, Andy (USA )
4. Safin, Marat (RUS )
5. Nadal, Rafael (ESP )
6. Gaudio, Gaston (ARG )
7. Agassi, Andre (USA )
8. Coria, Guillermo (ARG )
9. Henman, Tim (GBR )
10. Canas, Guillermo (ARG )
11. Nalbandian, David (ARG )
12. Johansson, Joachim (SWE )
13. Ljubicic, Ivan (CRO )
14. Moya, Carlos (ESP )
15. Stepanek, Radek (CZE )

He pulled out of Estoril with a bad shoulder, and didn't know until the last minute if he would be able to play Roma. Out of respect for him, the tournament gave him the last possible time to play his first-round match, and he tried, but he couldn't serve at full steam, and that hurt him. But the injury was well known and publicized, especially in the Spanish press. I watched the match, and the commentators mentioned it quite a bit.

And the rankings highlight something I said in another thread in response to someone who said Rafa had an easy draw in Roma, until the final. Before facing Coria, he played Canas and Stepanek (third round and quarters), and then Ferrer, who has one of the best claycourt records this year.

Yes, definitely Nadal's draw in Rome was no easy one!!! He earned that win!!!

Speaking of Moya's injury, does anyone know exactly what the shoulder problem is exactly? (Torn rotator? Nerve damage? Tendonitis?) Is it something serious, or will he be able to recover to 100% by the French Open?

how does gaudio manage to stay up there?!?

having a slam in his back pocket helps. It's funny, no one questions how Nadal is 'staying up there', only because he just got there. Might be instructive to see how they arrive at their point totals:

Gaudio

1000 Roland Garros
900 Five Optional tourneys (3W/2F, all clay)
205 Clay MS
110 Other Slams (AO/US)
155 Other MS
-------
2370 Total (89% from clay)

Nadal

1000 Clay MS (Monte Carlo/Rome)
1020 Six Optionals (4W/2QF, all but one clay)
185 Slams (AO/US)
395 Other MS
-------
2600 Total (75% from clay)

both players have really loaded up on the optional points. For comparison, Henman has 205, Safin 360.

To give credit Gaudio has backed up his slam better than Costa (who hasn't won at all since his slam) or Johansson (took over two years to win another title). Even if Gaudio lost 1R at both Hamburg and Roland Garros, he would still be ranked around #15.

Gaudio plays a bunch of meaningless clay events while everyone is playing hards or grass. Sleazy, but smart. He's an opportunist.

Examples from 2004

Start of 04 he plays nothing and shows up to AO to lose early (as planned I'm sure). Maybe win a match or two if possible. Then he packs his bags and heads to South America to gear up for the clay season. Dude plays four small clay events between AO and IW.

Basically shows his face at IW and Miami gets that over with to prepare for the seconc leg of the clay season. Other than a win in Barcelona he doesn't show much during the season cosidering he's the eventual FO champ (which btw he doesn't deserve).

So he wins the RG and like most past champs jumps on a plane to compete in event 1 of the third leg of the clay season in Sweden I think. All of the other top ten are either resting at this point or preparing for the largest event of the year Wimbledon. Not Gaudio, he going to skip that one and play some meaningless events in Germany for a few weeks.

He doesn't do sh'it from here on out and ofcourse makes it to houston bumping out someone else so that he can embarrass himself and show to the tennis world why he belongs. Nice Gaston. What a loser.

So in a nutshell, while the rest of the tour is some place else he's playing a bunch of clay events scrounging up all the money and points he can get, skips the grass seaon, and most of the hard season. Oh and winning RG helps too.

What pisses me off is the guy can play, but he's too lazy and doesn't give a crap.

Ah Chadwixx, my frilly-nylon pantied little Brit--still taking potshots, i.e. sweeping generalizations with no basis in fact, you sneering little twerp?

Let me ask you my little "dedicated follower of fashion" for your opinion: When a pinstriped London banker (with bowler hat & umbrella) is to attend a dinner with his collegues, what bra and garter belt/panty ensamble would YOU suggest he wear--that is, what bra and panty ensamble is considered de rigueur with the "slap 'n tickle" boys rife in MOST British banking circles?

Your turn little ChadwixxFiddlesticks: why don't you name ALL those ("most") American players who've made a habit of letting the world know they're not 100%......you never know; maybe I'll more than match it with those from other countries. Your move Twinkie!

anyone who types all that to insult someone doesnt have much else in life todo i guess. but i will respond to the last part.

no basis of fact? i guess u dont read the post match interviews. williams, agassi, roddick, capriati, davenport, sampras and many others. pretty much everyone except blake and spadea, i dont keep up with the lower ranked women but im sure there are a few who dont pull this.

btw goober, im an american (i see u know as much about ppl as u do tennis), i just dont like the mtv like attitude the top american players have.

i just like the emphasis to be on the tennis not the individual. i could really careless about them personally i just like watching the tennis.

"cyber e.e. cummings" act

say what?

just a harmless observation of everything in lower case letters (i.e. no Caps) that's all.

I don't see Moya as much of a fighter. He never guts out any tough matches (except for Davis Cup)...Never beats anyone above him in ranking. He really doesn't seem to care when he loses, could it be the Mallorca attitude?

It can't be the Mallorca attitude. Nadal is a Mallorca boy too, and he seems to like winning a lot more than losing.
