Multi/Multi hybrid or Triax/Multi.

I’m trying to find the optimal string setup for a 10 yo junior player. The racquet is Radical MP (2023).
Prefer to stay away from poly hybrids for now. We used NXT 16 and Sensation previously. Mainly looking to increase spin potential and control. Also reduce string movement. Has anyone tried to hybrid Triax with another multi such as Velocity MLT or X-1 with something cheaper?

You have a 10 year old playing with a Radical MP? Strong kid

Have you considered just hybrid-ing with a string your kid is already used to? Just switching the crosses to Velocity should reduce string movement. Not telling you not to look at other multi's but you really won't find a meaningful difference in spin between one multi and another. They'll feel and play different, but actual spin creation they're all pretty close to each other. Velocity works pretty well as a cross for any multi.

Velocity is the only one that will perform differently as a cross, the rest are all *relatively* sticky.

Multifeel($$)/Velocity and Biphase($$$)/Velocity is where I’d start if you’re set on a hybrid, though NXT and Sensation are good and not terrible, respectively.

Radical MP is only 5-6 g. heavier than his previous v6 Blade 98L which he had for a year. The Radical is also 5g. below factory spec weight. We demoed a bunch of racquets including lighter versions of Blade, Ezone, Vcore and he seemed to like heavier frames. Yes I was thinking the same about Velocity and ordered a few packs in 17 gauge. From reading the reviews it appears that Triax is almost as good as poly in spin potential.

Thanks. I have some old NXT16 and will try them in mains.

I found that Triax in the main slides better with a synthetic gut cross as opposed to a multi or full bed Triax.
Do you string syn gut cross a few lbs lower than mains? I will probably start @55. How does it play besides the sliding? I’d also like to try Triax main/Velocity cross.

My wife still plays with Triax Mains / OG Sheep Micro Crosses. She uses a Speed MP (360+) and likes it at 54lbs full bed. I’d be inclined to string your son at 55lb full bed. Not sure there will be much advantage to the synthetic gut cross being a few lbs less.

The theory is that looser crosses would allow main strings to move a little better. Another guy was saying that since crosses are shorter in length they don’t need the same tension

I do believe that is correct. But I’m not sure you see the same benefit when not using poly.

Have you tried any other syn gut? On “Compare Strings Tool” Sheep Micro is listed as having higher string to string friction than Gamma or Wilson syn guts. Lower spin potential as well.

I haven’t. But don’t over think it when it comes to synthetic gut. The difference between brands is marginal.
