Multi to full poly

Currently playing with a 2015 PS97 with x-one biphase 17g at 52lbs (played at 56 for a few years but wanted more power). Looking at switching and thinking potentially a full poly bed. Can't afford Nat gut btw. I have been recommended solinco hyper g 17g at around 50lbs or a lux Alu power at a low tension.

The x-one has been good, however just frays too quickly and snap after around 5-6 hours. The drop to 52lbs was good at first but is slightly unreliable now, so I really feel like I might need to try a multi. I also recently tried RPM blast with a syngut at 53lbs and was not that much of a fan of the set up, but am looking to experiment more!

I play with a lot of top spin and a flat 1HBH, so any advice would really be appreciated

if you like the performance and power of a multi, i would start with a soft poly like yonex poly tour pro 1.20mm, völkl vstar, völkl cyclone tour or isospeed cream at 48lbs. with stiffer polys you will loose power and comfort.

I switched from full X1 to full poly now. I'm currently using a full bed of Luxilon 4G, and love it.

I found fb Cream medium power @50. My guess is someone who likes x-1 @52 has to be 45ish with Cream, and I still have my doubts. You are the string breaker, I am not ... but if @dimamid breaks x-1 in 6 hours you wonder how long Cream lasts. I haven't played x-1, but based on comments it's the most powerful multi ... I wonder how you go to any poly from x-1 @52. I guess I haven't played enough co-polys to know for sure. Cream got a TW review power rating of 65... yptp 45. The energy return pct in the tw string tool says all poly pretty much 88% to 93% … don't see how that is very useful if you are looking for most poweful co-poly.

I played rpm blast 16g for 5 years, so very familar with it. What did you not like about it? That's probably a good place to start.

I've never played much with a highe end multi, but from what I gather, they offer quite a bit of power. Especially at 52#.

One of the main characteristics of poly is its lower power for those that can generate their own power with full swings.

I found Black Widow to have a good blend of power and control.

Currently I'm floating on the gut/poly cloud. Oh, so good. At least the cheaper poly helps keep the cost of stringing down.

I play with the 2015 PS97 as well. I've been doing a Lux Alu Power Soft/Wilson Sensation hybrid for several months, 50/52, 51/53 tension. I recently strung up a full bed of Lux Alu Power Soft at 55 lbs. So far so good and I'm even thinking I could string it tighter. I've always played with lower tension hybrids, but this midrange tension has given me an opportunity to feel comfortable taking some healthy whacks at the ball.

You're jumping from the soft end of the string spectrum all the way over to the stiffer stuff. Going to a full bed of poly will probably leave you feeling like your string bed response is diminished - more "dead" - but if you're going to try full poly options, you might have success with thinner gauges at tensions in the mid-to-high 40's.

I have one of those Wilsons and I've been experimenting with a few string setups to get something cozy and controlled - feel can be a tricky gremlin to nail down. I usually string my racquets with syn. gut and right now my PS 97 is set up with 17 ga. Kirschbaum standard syn. gut at maybe 56 or 57 lbs. I could easily get more firmness and control with a little extra tension or a swap to 16 ga. syn. gut.

If the feel of the polys doesn't suit you, but you want something that's only a little more firm than a multifiber, syn. gut can offer a very good middle ground and it's typically much less expensive than either a premium multi or popular polys like RPM Blast. Also remember that polys will work better at lower tensions than multis or syn. guts.
