Multifilament Mains and Polyester Crosses Playability

Hi all,

In your experience, what is the playability of mulit mains and poly crosses, and how does it differ from full bed multi or gut mains/poly crosses? I'm not concerned with durability, just with how it plays and feels, and any playability advantages it might offer.

Thanks!

I string a lot of multi/poly hybrids. My experience along with feedback from my pals is if you can handle a poly cross it is better than a full multi bed. The strings are not locked and they don't get stuck out of place unless the whole setup is ready for a restring. I think there is better snapback than a full bed of multi as well.

You just have to be careful that the multi is slippery and holds tension well and the poly is round.

I love this hybrid. Key is to use a round slippery poly and a quality multi that will last. If you don't hit with a lot of topspin, it can last quite a while. Solinco has a nice prepackaged one with Vanquish multi and Tour Bite poly. Tourbite is a square poly so it's not as ideal as a round one, but it still works well and lasts pretty good and it's only $12 a set!

Actually just tried velocity 1.3 main with MSV coFocus Hex ultra 1.15(feels like it's closer to 1.2) cross. 56-52 tension. I have no experience in hybriding but I obviously enjoyed the feel over full bed poly. I was mostly surprised to see how much top spin it had. Felt like the ball was kicking more. Maybe it's because of the varying tension, maybe the combo.

It is a very good set up. Plus you save some money too if you don't use premium poly for your cross.

Few good crosses:
Ghost Wire
PP Black Force\Red Devil
ISOSpeed
Genesis Black Magic.

I tried Wilson nxt mains and Lux element crosses in a few different sticks and was surprisingly pleased. Great power and soft feel but still adequate spin and control.

I just strung up velocity/PLII (both 16g) at 58/56 lbs (strung high, thinking it would have more power than im used to but so far, its not so great. The first 15min was pretty good...i felt the snapback and slickness of velocity, but after that it went downhill. It did feel a bit locked up and the mains went out of place a lot. Might be better off stringing poly at a lower tension

I have had the opposite experience. Way too powerful, much higher launch angle, and less feel than with a poly/multi setup. I do my poly/multi at 53/51 and even doing the multi/poly at 56/54, the launch angle was too severe.

I've tried Babolat VS touch, NRG2, Biphase, and Vanquish in combos with Cyberflash, Cyclone, Blackcode, and Tour bite. Could never get the feel right.

This is my favorite hybrid. Play it in my ultra tours and about to try it in a prestige pro 360+

What racket? I found open string patterns to be this way for sure.

Update to my Velocity/Pro Line II stringbed,...
It broke. :)
It was my second outing and it had about 2.5 to 4 hrs on it.
I haven’t broke poly in a couple years but I guess I break multi pretty fast.
I would say on the second outing, it felt better than from hour 0:30 to hour 2:00. I guess it somewhat “broke in” and I started to feel a bit more softer and forgiving feel and less of the “locked-in” feeling. It became more plush and a bit more comfortable on off-center hits. For spin, what you put in is what you get (minus a little bit). No free spin from this one. But nice to hit on flatter shots.

You are not playing a multi/poly setup at its full potential by stringing the poly cross at a high tension. Multi is softer and does not slide as well as poly because it dents easily during play. To overcome this the poly needs to be strung at a lower reference tension. It will vary by racquet but a general rule I have is to not string the poly cross over 50 lbs. a poly that is low powered with good tension maintenance works best to play consistent at lower tensions.

The reason this works is because you are helping to overcome the downfalls of a multi by stringing the poly at a lower reference tension to lower friction between the hard poly crosses and soft multi mains. This will free up the multi mains to snap back and work in unison with the poly crosses. Try 58/48 next time and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the advice. I still have the other half of Velocity so I may try it. I didn't know I should string the poly lower. I tried RS New York/RS Lyon with Lyon at 2lbs lower and it played much better than the Velocity/PLII bed. I don't recall if locking in and it was comfortable the whole time. There was a mini break in period but that was it.
Again, may or may not try it (may try it so OP has a tension reference between 2lb and 10lb difference). I had another racquet with Wilson Nat Gut 17/RS Lyon 17 and liked how it played.

Currently playing with Isospeed Professional Classic 17 mains and a 1.18 soft smooth poly crosses. It plays like a muted bed of full poly.
