Murray making the right moves with 99sq inches

Murray's win over Nadal at Abu Dhabi might have been helped with his new racquet he's testing. I've been starting to see a trend where pros are going up in head size and I really think its taking their game to a whole another level. Murray was dictating rallies, serving bombs, and was defending with way more power. I know Nadal is coming off an injury but the power of shots Murray has been striking at with a 99 sq inch Head Prestige PT 57 layup with the auxetic prestige mp mold at a heavy weight makes me want to try more 97-100 square inch weighted up frames. Do you think he could've beaten Nadal this dominantly with his old pt57 95 sq inch? I know this match was an exhibition and best of 3 sets but if Murray sticks with his new racquet, I really think he's going back into the top 10 and contending for titles again. This match just surprised me because I was expecting Nadal to be butchering balls from the baseline with his 100 sq in Aeropro and controlling most of the points like usual, but Murray gave it right back to him.

I doubt this has anything to do with racquet and more to do with scenario. Too many people forget it’s the player and not the racquet. Nadal is super rusty and hasn’t played in months while Murray has been grinding and really challenging top players. If Nadal was more experienced I doubt Murray would take the win here

Murray has been quite stubborn with his old racquet. Hope the new change will carry him much further.

Looking at the highlights of the matches after his rehab, he was outplayed a lot of the times due to gear issues (gear and gear set-up being not optimal for modern tennis). His tennis skills and techniques were obviously better than his opponents

True it’s more of the player than racquet, but a player with a better racquet setup makes the player even better…

If it can transform his B Game capability of endless ball-striking of incredible consistency and moderate to strong power into relentless merciless but hell-striking that costs him no more than the old, and still have all his iq behind it, then he could really go on a tear. His strokes look better to me with the new racquet. Doesn't necessarily translate to being better, but Murray is such a talent and also stubborn that I could believe he could have done something suboptimal for a long time and made it work. Plus the slight alteration may help remind him of any new habits he has to keep post surgery, or just fit with them better.

Watching him vs rublev I think now he has the bigger head he needs a tighter pattern so he can put more "janky" shots in the mix- his swing path is too clear- too textbook, which it has to be for an open pattern- but Murray has good capacity for quick switches in fractions of seconds. I think being able to adjust the stroke later in the motion would help him wrongfoot the opponent and also hit faster flat shots. In addition it would allownhim to drolly "absorb" heavier shots, arriving later. The people he talks to are only going to suggest textbook things and ways that work for other people. At the root his game and talent give him a good capacity for unorthodoxy, and little bits of risk taking loose players can't predict, and low net clearance shots that skid rather than sitting up but that type of play needs a closed pattern. Only caveat is if there is a body reason he isn't doing that.

There is no better frame that absorbs the heaviest shots than the PT57A- I have never seen another frame do that well…

Sorry if I've missed this in one of these threads, but do you know if Andy has tried the Pro Tour 2.0? Or is a bigger head (or the original layup) more important to him than increased power?

it can definitely help him with the strokes, but he can now barely survive a 2-3 set matches, he's not as fit anymore. maybe top 20 if he will improve.

Seems like Murray is back to using his trusty pt57a for Indian Wells right now. Interesting he’s had a couple good matches like beating Nadal in straights with his 99 square inch prestige mp/tour mold but also a couple rough losses as well. I’m guessing he didn’t like the control he was getting from 99sq inches.

Any videos of practice from IW?

I thought he was playing better last autumn with his old racquet than he's been playing this year with the new one.

Tbh I don't think either makes too big a difference as it's not a Federer situation where his problem was having a weaker groundstroke he needs help with.
