Andy just lost to a player ranked in the 200's at the Rafa Challenger event. Is he ready for an actual Masters 1000 event? I thought he was going to play Challengers for the rest of the year?

He doesn't seem to be too sure of the best direction to go in but he clearly wants to get back to playing ATP events as soon as he feels able to do so. Frankly I don't hold out too much hope after his early exit in Mallorca but we'll see.

Boy, I agree. If Andy can't beat that Viola guy in the third round of a Challenger event, I don't see how he can do anything in a Masters 1000 field. I thought his plan was to continue in Challengers until he hopefully wins one or two, then return to the main tour?

Cahill interviewed Ivan at the USO and Lendl said something to the effect of, "Andy needs a Miami training block from now until December to get ready for the AO. He is not physically ready at all to play real matches, especially BO5." That's paraphrasing, but the gist of what he said.

He's signed up to play 4 ATP events in a row, all back to back: 3 in Asia (Zhuhai, Beijing, Shanghai) and 1 in Europe (Antwerp). I wonder if he thinks he will just be able to play himself into some kind of form by playing as much as possible? I just hope he isn't biting off more than he can chew!

I didn't know this.

He said he was cramping in a Challenger event against Viola, who is ranked about #210. As a frame of reference, Agassi played two Challengers during the first stages of his comeback. He lost in the final of one, and then won the other. Muzz lost third round of a Challenger depleted because everyone else was playing the USO or trying to qualify there.

Not a good move, IMO. He needs to win a Challenger before entering main draws of bigger events. Just my .05 pence (Euros, cents, etc.)

Taking a spot from a better player for money.

Why dont tournaments have an integrity unit?

Geez man. What about older players who already have enough money?

Tennis is a competitive sport first. Give him exo money or something but other players are more deserving of that spot.

Think of the guy who has to go through the qualies now because the queen wants to play.

Good to know how you feel about him. Not only him. Nadal, Djokovic, Murray. I see a certain pattern there.

Murray has to take wild cards etc. because he used to be a top player and now working his way to get there where he once was. Not sure if he'll make it there but he has to try.

Tell Federer to retire. He is holding up entire generations.

No, it's a business first. If Agassi wants a WC he'll get one too and Random Guy that was bounced can try to get through quailies.

Fed is ranked #3, he earned his spot but dont like him using the old man rule to skip mandatory tournaments.

You are a fan of a player, not the sport. We cant really have this conversation. How i feel about a player has no relevance to my opinion.

Btw, wIldcards should be given to that countries up and coming players. It used to be a benefit of hosting the event (helps your federation), now they are selling out

They should give the girl from big bang theory all the wildcards she wants. Maybe she can play opera first round. Who needs tennis when we can have a cirus

So how does that work? I became a fan of Murray first and then he started playing tennis? Or he started playing tennis and then I happened to stumble upon it and thought, 'oh what a good looking player. I think I will support him'? Because as far as I see both elements go hand in hand. It's no surprise that you are a fan of Federer who happens to hate Murray, Nadal and Djokovic.

I started watching tennis since I was a little girl, man.

The more you spend time on TTW the more your maturity level tends to go down. We are now all toddlers. lmho!

Yet laver and agassi wildcards arent?

I dont wanna be rude so bye :) I spoke my opinion on someone getting something they didnt earn at the cost of someone who did.

Well, if you want to be just and fair then you can be so and you are most surely entitled to your opinion but calling Murray ‘Queen’ is quite offensive if you know what I mean.

That was just pure hatred and I don’t think it had anything to do with Andy getting a wildcard.

Reminded me of the downton abbey movie coming out, the queen comes to town. Special treatment etc, i thought it was a good analogy for him accepting the masters wc when he is barely challenger lvl atm.

Wildcards were made for the juniors and countrymen. Like a college d1 winner and kalamazoo 18s got a spot (not sure if they still get). Its about building the sport

I have different views than those in this thread, but will stick by what i know :)

Fed, nadal and djok skipping mandatory masters only hurts the sport overall. Sponsorship to concession stands. People arent going to pay big money unless the top talent is required to be there, otherwise its a gamble.

Sleep with dogs, get used to fleas.

Murray probably wrecked his hip in part by the big push for #1 in 2016, winning five tournaments in a row, one of which was Shanghai. It’s a decent move by their TD to extend the WC, instead of an overmatched Chinese junior prodigy.

Personally, I think he’s going to get back to a decent level by the end of 2020 and would be better served to that goal with more training and less competition but he’s itchy to play.

So you don’t suppose Murray earned the right to receive a wildcard because he is at a challenger level at the moment? A player who used to be a top player and has a few slams behind him? Surely out of respect he should have one? It’s not the end of the world, you know?

He has earned the right to play Laver Cup, not masters :)
