Murray the moaner......

After watching several of Andy Murray's matches....altho at times it is great to have the court side microphones....I am becoming more and more bored with Murray's snide comments....watching the match against Roddick...he was going on about 'He's giving me nothing....' One thing for Muray to work will be his fitness...until that is sorted...he will not be able to make it into the worlds elite...which the commentators on Skysports were saying that Murray had a gruelling match against Ginepri in the previous round...but didn't Federer only just from a Tournament win and a tough first round match.....but that is a new and different topic

But does anyone think that Murray moans too much....or is it just me....

He moans more than anyone else but everyone has their way of motivating themself, i think the "he is giving me nothing" was aimed at his coach however.

He still expects mumsy and diddy to tuck him in at night. He's a child mentally and physically. Gilbert will toughen him up. If he wanted a cheerleader he would have saved some money by picking a different coach.

Murray McWhinger or Moaning Murray?

I want to see him do well because he is a Brit... but let's be honest, he sees himself as Scottish and nothing to do with Britain as a nation - and to be fair, a lot of Scots feel the same way as he does.

So, my loyalties are to the "Brit", but when he decides one day that he is "just Scottish", which is inevitable IMO, I can just acknowledge that he is a great tennis player, rather than a great tennis player with class.

That's true. However, I haven't heard anyone make disparaging remarks about Murray like they have Gasquet. Gasquet has been called, by a fellow pro. weird and spoiled. Gasquet has had his share of moments including but not limited to throwing a racket and hitting an official.

Monfils appears to be an OK kid. I haven't heard anything bad about him. Good for him. Likewise with Berdych. However, neither of them has the pressure that Murray has. No one cares what Berdych does. Monfils is clearly behind Gasquet in his country, so he's getting a hall pass.

Murray has been touted the great hope for the Kingdom. He's got a lot of pressure on him. I think he's doing fine.

All that said, I agree that his game is boring. :)

So you are saying that beause Murray has more pressure he can go around moaning all day on the court and showing disrespect to his coach? Gasquet does not moan like an idiot, he is almost the same age as Murray and he is very well behaved on the court. All the other young players don't moan like Murray, i doesn't matter if they have more pressure or not.

To osteo UK, when Henman plays at Wimbledon the crowd all have England flags. How 'British' is this.

Rabbit, did you see Nadal, Gasquet, Monfils, and Berdych moan the way he does? They are all about Murrays age, none of them act like a baby.

I agree with you.

The thing thats weird about him is that he mopes around for a little while, then he suddenly hits a winner and fist pumps, then he does a little more moping.

Jesus, people... have you become so damned programmed into believing that being a 'well behaved' robot is the way a tennis player 'should be' that you can't accept honest expression?

I saw Murray 2 years ago as a Junior, and I liked him then. I liked his natural expressiveness. The kid is not afraid to express what he's feeling - even if it makes him look like a horse's ass - and that should definitely be very much respected.

I think that match against Roddick was a blast to watch - mostly due to Murrays muttering and ongoing commentary. It's funny stuff. The kid is fun to watch. He 'wears his heart on his sleeve' - and that is very refreshing to see among a bunch of automatons. hell, he's even using an iRadical, isn't he? That's 2 generations of paint job ago - how thoroughly 'uncool'. He's a throwback to a better, more genuine time - which is quite impressive for a teenager, as most teens follow whatever is popular at the moment.

He's also got more guts than 90% of his peers on the tour. He could barely walk against Roddick, but he kept coming up with great shots out of nowhere. It seems that he doesn't know the meaning of the term 'give up'.

I thoroughly like the kid.

And I can't believe that people find his game boring either. It's a breath of fresh air to watch a guy who actually THINKS about what he is doing, and doesn't try to whack the cover off the ball on every single shot.

I used to think that Murray was just a pusher... but something has changed.
1. His serve is getting better every week. I think Gilbert saw something here that he could easily tweak to help him win.
2. His accuracy is amazing. All the counterpunching has helped him and he can hit "down the line" with incredible regularity.
3. Determination... half the time, Murray looks like he has nothing left, yet still goes on to win 2 more rounds. He is able to psych out much more seasoned opponents and never lets anybody serve out a match easily.

I used to abhor watching Murray matches, but I think we can all learn something by watching 2005 Murray vs 2006 Murray because he has learned how to WIN UGLY!

Yeah it is pretty funny to watch sometimes. Actually, watching any tennis player get mad is funny.

I like the kid..... at least he's not a drama queen

I don't mind a show of emotion, but Murray's seems be such a whiner.

GUys like McEnroe, Becker, GOran, they would display emotion, they would yell and scream and rage; Murray whines and cries and moans.

I guess it just seems unmanly in way. It seems like something you should see on the WTA. Chang was the same way, with his constant *****ing and whining about line calls.

Yea, Murrays so young but so smart on the court, i didnt like how roddick tried to intimidate him the other day though, i dont think it got to murray but thats only cos hes mentally quite strong, it could have ruined the match.

Everybody has their own way of handling emotions. Fact is, they are good enough to reach their level, so we should just appreciate their technique.

Come on, let's be honest, don't tell me that none of you has ever shown the slightest emotion on the court, be it anger or elation? ;)

Disrespect to his coach? First off, his Coach is a paid employee and as such he can treat him any way the two of them agree on. Secondly, where is the outrage for how Tommy Haas treats his coach(es)? Haas is much worse on his coaches than Murray doing a little groaning and moaning. Come on, be fair. Murray is only a kid, he's not even 20 yet is he?

I don't understand this. Even when Mac was at the top I wished he'd "grow up and play." (And I understand Mac's "act" was largely just that ... a gross gamesmanship ploy to throw-off his opponent. I still found it ... cheap.)

He 'wears his heart on his sleeve' - and that is very refreshing to see among a bunch of automatons.
Okay, but I wonder who this "bunch of automatons" is...?

I suspect he's got you fooled, too. That limping and feigning injury is part of Murray's Gross Gamesmanship.

(I've said Murray is the "Earl Campbell" of the ATP. Campbell, and NFL Running Back, would get tackled ... and appear to limp and drag his battered body back to the huddle. Only to explode into the next running play like his hair was on fire(!). Lot's of Defenders were certain they were wearing him down ... to their own peril.)

What makes me call his act "gross gamesmanship" is ... I believe he over-does the whining / moping / pretense at injury. (As another poster alluded) he comes across like a whiney little girl. Just play the game, Andy!

Curious that you saw Roddick as the "bad guy." I thought it was an effective Counter-Gamesmanship to Murray's act. (And it *did* look like it was getting to Murray ... to me.)

Oh! Cheap shot!

I'd love to see how anyone on TT would react to winning a Major, (which is the pic you posted). But ... we won't ever get to see that reaction, will we?
___________

P.S. I'm not "anti-Murray." I think he's got a great Counter-Puncher game. I just wish he'd stop the childishness and play.

Well I guess that all depends on your definition of major. :)

And this is exactly where I think I've grown a little. I remember coming down very hard on Roddick for his theatrics versus Chang at his first French Open. He was trying to create drama, faking cramps and trying to make the match more than it was. Murray is at that same stage. I just don't see hammering him when he'll grow out of it in a couple of years, just like Roddick.

Granted, there are some mature youngsters out there like James Blake who never went through this phase, but really and truly how much different were we at 19?

Yea i suppose some people saw murray as the bad guy, the only reason why i see roddick as "the bad guy" is because he is older, i dont think murray would be able to intimidate roddick even if he tried.

I would love it if roddick still reacted like this to points: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Hp-EArV6s8

Thanks for asking. Actually, age 19 is *just* when I stopped acting like a complete fool on the court. (I can honestly say, Mac looked like a Saint compared to me at 18.)

I was 19 and about to smash my "umpteenth" racket. In fully loaded backswing, I suddenly had the thought, "This is dumb." I never broke or threw another racket in these 31 years since....

I don't understand your "major" remark, Rabbit.

Murray sounds like a whiny bratty teenager, but that doesn't bother me. Sometimes he is amusing to listen to. Other times you wish they would turn off the mics. But there's enough room for all types on the tour.

I saw Monfils at the US Open Boys two years ago and he made Murray look like a cheerleader. He's not quite the same cry baby-punk-jerk he was then (now he only does the punk act) ...but my point is, Murray is not alone in the 19's brat/whiner category.

What was Monfils doing at US open boys?

Well, let's say that you're a senior (30+ guys don't get rude) and you win a regional tournament which includes nationally ranked playes of your age. Or if you even win an Open tournament. One player's nothing tournament is another player's major.

Ummm....a couple of years ago he was a boy...on his way to an apparent Jr. Grand Slam. Didn't happen. I wanted to see the guy play and while he had streaks of genius on the court, he was such a punk out there...disrespecting anyone and everyone. Whining about every call and walking around like he was some street gangsta. I was embarassed for him. Fortunately for him he lost some of that nonsense. I'm still not a big fan.

It's rather interesting to see how this thread has evolved.

The bottom line is that the fans want someone with both technique and personality.

Would rather see the anger or defiant emotion on-court than someone who whines and complains a lot. Would rather hear a curse word, for example, than someone who repeatedly down officials or calls and blames everything and everyone else when they can't produce. But sometimes (well, often) such tennis players can evolve into another being over the course of time. Andre Agassi comes to mind.

KK, your psychoanalysis of Murray might have some value if you'd at least met him once. But as you likely haven't, to lay those charges of "gross gamesmanship" against him sounds like nothing more than sour grapes.
Did he beat your favorite player somewhere along the line?

To say that a 19 year old who has been on the pro tour for only a little over a year is out-manipulating older and far more experienced pros is itself gross ignorance.

Maybe he doesn't do it on purpose, but it certainly does have an effect on these more experienced pros. These are the same pros that get distracted by whispers and people in the crowd 30 feet away moving around. You're telling me they're not going to get distracted by their opponent whining and moaning and smacking the racquet and berating the coach? Murray complains about playing so much tennis and being so tired, but he doesn't look very tired when he casually hits those down-the-line backhand winners.

Well thats exactly what Murray was doing except he was also disrespecting his own coach. The thing that annoyed me the most about Murray was the way he started putting the blame on his own coach for his mistakes. What wrong with the way someone walks, if he walks like a street ganster then how is that disrespecting anyone or do you find it disrespecting to walk in a particular way, besides i don't even think he walks like a street gangster. If someone feels that they have been given a bad call then the can complain about, Murray on the other hand complains for no reason. I still don't get why you say Monfils would make Murray look like a cheerleader:confused:
