Murray's 2012 record against lower-ranked players

Was doing research about Murray for an article and found that he a lot more prone to losing to lower-ranked players than Djokovic, Federer and Nadal.

He was 31-6 last year vs. players outside the top 20 compared to 46-1, 47-2 and
25-2.

His Masters 1000 losses against players outside the top-20 included:
Janowicz in Paris (second round)
Chardy in Cincinnati (second round)
Raonic (via walkover, second round)
Gasquet in Rome (second round)
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in Indian Wells (first round)

Why do you guys think that is?

Can you do the stats over several years? I don't think it's reliable to draw conclusions from the results of just 1 season.
How did he manage to lose a set to Millman by the way?

I don't understand your list. Raonic was #15 in Tokyo. He's definitely a top 20 player. The Canada thing was a walkover. It has nothing to do with Raonic at all since Murray didn't even play the match. Rome is clay. Murray is not an ace on clay, never has been. Hasn't won a title on that surface. Paris: he fell upon a new player on a hot streak, he was not Janowicz's only casualty in that event (Fed suffered an early loss to Benneteau in the past in Paris too) + all top players tanked in Paris this year to stay fresh enough for WTF. Chardy: that was surprising. I think he was still not 100% but didn't want to withdraw. Garcia-Lopez was a true counterperf (Garcia-Lopez had also upset Nadal in Bangkok in 2010). On the whole, Murray will look to be more consistent in 2013.

I guess this proves the point that nothing other than ultimate achievements matter in the bigger scheme of things in tennis. Murray could lose to 100+ ranked players all year, but he won the US Open so goes down as having had a better year than everyone who didn't win a major.

Probably because he's so prone to being upset oncourt. He was definitely very upset yesterday vsing #199 so not hard to imagine. Plus he definitely doesn't have the aura that Fed and Djoker have.

Screaming at his box all day prbly doesn't help either. Though not sure how much he did that with Lendl on board last year

He did not care about Masters, he has even said himself that he didn't focus on those tournaments and instead prepared himself for the slams.
