Murray's best surface?

through what reasoning do you (pretty much everyone it seems) say that HC is his best surface?

b/c he goes to the slam finals a couple of times?
he said in interviews that he loves HC most?

he only gets to play grass about twice a year and HC about a million times, therefore better results on HC, which means it's his best surface?

counter-punching style is best suited on the slower surface of HC instead of grass? no?

I'm confused, help me out. Especially with that last part, or how does the clay fits into this?

edit: why did Brad Gilbert said grass is Murray's best surface (at Wimbledon last year iirc)? Is he a moron that doesn't know tennis or something?

When you judge on his results, his best is hardcourt.

But he said he loves clay. IMO, his game suits it well and he enjoys it - 'pushy-lengthy' rallies, cheeky bit of serve and volley, using slice, early backhand to full effect etc.

On grass as well, slice and netgame works well for Murray.

But then again, indoor hardcourts...WTF 2010 he played well.

Ah f&Ck! Now I'm just as confused as you. He plays well on all surfaces and suits them all. But I'd go back to my first sentence, his best is hard court simply because he (and everyone else) plays most on it - he's won tournaments and been in slam finals on that surface. But if you made the whole tour clay, or the whole tour grass - I think he'd perform just as well.

Murray plays his best when his first serve is on song and he's not missing many. He can hit some hard serves (late 130s) and can be very hard to break when playing like this as rare as it is.

Clay doesn't give him many free points and his movement is not quite good enough on clay. Hardcourt gives him a chance to use his serve,move well and extract errors from people.

How many Master's 1000s has he won that are on hard courts? 7... other surfaces.... 0.

Reached his last two slam finals on Slow Hard Court surface of Australian open. Also did well at IW and Miami in 2009 which were slow btw.

Then again moderate to fast hc on Toronto,Cininatti and US Open. He has excelled at Toronto winning twice, and Cincinnati twice and a US Open final.


So basically any type of Hard Courts. Though he also won Queens twice and reached the WImbledon semis three times in a row.


If he can reach another final at the Aussie....then for sure it has to be slow hard courts.

Federer: 9 HC majors (most on any surfaces) = his best surface

How many times do I have to say this.
FAST Hard Courts, FAST Hard Courts, FAST Hard Courts is Murray's best surface.
How many times does Murray have to thrash the likes of Federer, Nadal and Djokovic on this surface to prove the point?
There are no fast hardcourt Slams so you can't compare and say that his best surface is slow hardcourt because he gets to yet another final or maybe even wins it.
Murray doesn't just beat these players on fast hardcourt, he often annihilates them. 6-0 against a fit Nadal!
What does it take to convince people?
Murray's good enough to go far at slow hardcourt slams but compare his results against the top 3 there.
He's the one more often taking a good beating.
