In The match with M. Copil, it seemed like it was in his mind, but being almost a total baseliner, he was not comfortable with it... Was charging ahead for ROS, then moving back to baseline.... Seemed confused a little bit to me

Maybe we can see SEAM (Sneak Attack by Murray) in future once he develops it fullly. As his ROS is very good, this can be a lethal weapon as his age and surgery won't allow him for pushing for infinite times, and he needs shortening the points......
He has variety, if he utilizes it wisely, I can see agressive murray on the horizon of nearby future

I would like to know what are the views of murray fans, the only one I know is @Mainad

Against some opponents, a second serve is the most attackable ball you are likely to see when you are in return games (only ball that bounces inside the service line), so good to take advantage of when it comes.

What is this acronym people came up with? Its called chip and charge - practised from a very long time on tennis courts. Kudos to Fed for bringing it back, albeit unsuccessfully. Simple plain old english term.

Unsuccessfully!!??
Did you watch cincy 2015, USO15??
If not for his mental issues in USO15 final, he could have won it in easy 4..
Won cincy without dropping serve or set, annihilating djokorray en route

Murray invented SABR. When Federer tried it I was puzzled by the hype as I have seen Murray numerous time doing that long time ago.

Murray has definitely made some changes to his game this year and I think that it's a positive thing. I see the Murrays and the Sverevs and wonder why the two brothers with the excellent volleys can't impart that to their brothers.

Baby stop with the excuses. Djokovic won the US Open 2015 final because he was undoubtedly a better player than Federer in 2015.

I love the "mental issues" excuse. Tennis is a physical sport not an intellectual one. The US Open 2015 final was not the World Chess Championship:

That's not chip and charge. You'd have to stand further than on the service line to call it that.

Sorry, blocking a ball and rushing to the net is chip and charge whether it's on a return of serve or not. Media hyped it up as something he came up with. He did not invent it.

Again, neither did Murray invent it per se. That said, I never understood the hype either when Federer tried the same.

In Cincinnati he took them by surprise. By USO Djokovic was absolutely ready.

Frankly I am not aware of any mental issues for Federer. Any personal problems he was undergoing then that I am unaware of? On court, it was djokovic who was the one fighting his opponent and the obnoxious crowd.

To be honest I think Federer made an unwise decision. He should have revealed his new ploy in the USO. Djokovic's team was ready for it by USO. Sorry but the so called sabr is not as widely used by Federer himself these days.

Thanks for graciously labelling me blind.

Blocking ball and rushing either on serve or not is for me chip-charge. Let's agree to disagree.
This isn't about agreeing with each other, it's a factual thing. This wasn't chip-and-charge because BY DEFINITION Federer would have to chip the ball before attacking the net which he clearly didn't. It's not even technically possible to chip a ball if you're picking it up from the ground.

Sorry for the multiple posts! It seems my computer is crazy today :)

@tennis_pro he is doing a half-volley on the serve. In a way he is blocking it and charging to the net. I don't see it as anything else. To do it against superior servers is actually very difficult and only this guy could have tried to even do something like this.

If it's not anything new show me someone else doing it before Federer.

Was the first point chip-and-charge too?

It isn't hitting any kind of shot and attacking the net.

So if Federer hits a drop shot return and goes to the net it's still chip-and-charge according to your theory?

If you don't see a difference between this:
and this:

then you're blind.
It’s like discussing football (soccer) with people who don’t know what offside means. There are videos on YouTube called something like “McEnroe invented the original SABR!1!1!!” which show him doing a standard chip and charge. Unbelievable how people don’t see Federer is literally playing a half volley off a serve, sometimes a first serve. I’m not sure but I don’t think you’d wanna try that with a wooden racket.

I agree with you in one point, that fed should have saved it for USO.
But he surely had some mental issues, dumping usual simple FHs into net and way too atrocious on Break Points

TACTICAL PATTERNS

  • Deuce court taking a kick serve down the T and aggressively returning it down the line or the middle
  • Drive the forehand or backhand to the backhand corner of opponent and attack
  • Deuce: Run around forehand, hit it down the line and attack
  • Ad- Side: Chip down the line and charge
  • Ad- Side: Forehand inside out to backhand and attack
It's not necessary to chip a ball to make it chip and charge @tennis_pro.

Murray has never done a SABR from a first serve in his career. Fed did dozens in 2015.

Listen, I have seen SABR zillion times at all possible levels and those who try to do it give up quickly as Federer did. They usually get a lot of balls into balls, face and other body parts.

If you hit a normal groundstroke and attack the net that's hit-and-charge lmao. The "chip" part didn't show up by accident.

What if you hit a drop shot and attack the net? Does that still qualify as chip-and-charge?

So your proof is Kyrgios hitting a return and attacking the net in practice which isn't even a SABR?

I'm not surprised lmao.

Sure I am miserably ignorant about the sport. If that gives you two minutes of satisfaction I have no hesitation to give you that. I get turned off when people use language that I wouldn't dare use in real life. You haven't met me and you call me blind. I cannot carry on a conversation in this manner. If you want to put your point across, there are simply nicer ways of doing so. Its appalling what internet gives license to some people.

I would if you didn't have a clear agenda that you despise Federer.

See, I got no problem saying that Nadal invented the banana passing shot. But using your argumentation I'd claim that it's a regular passing shot but he's just bending the ball a little.

Dude from the very link that you posted...the very first sentence:
"What is Chip and Charge? It is tactic when the returner chips or slices the return and follows it in to the net."

Federer wasted 19 BP chances out of 23 in that final.Of course he has such issues. In one of the RG final he had converted 1 BP chance out of 17.2008 Wimbledon final - 1 BP chance converted out of 13.

LOL, tell me what a dropshot is - if not a short slice?

If you do play tennis, you will find sometimes you hit a bad slice and it accidentally becomes a dropshots.

You approach the term in a word-by-word way, it's completely wrong. Do a search and you'll see the term hit-and-charge is rarely used. Actually chip-and-charge includes hit-and-charge, it's simply a quick return followed by a net charge, no more no less.

I myself have done exactly the so called SABR since 2005, 10 years before your Fedr did it. Hahahahahahahaha.............

That is one of the dumbest tennis related things I've ever heard in my life and I've been on TTW for 7,5 years.

A short slice is what Federer did to Roddick a gazillion times back in the day.

It's one thing to play a SABR when you're a 3.0 hacker and another to do it on the highest of levels against a player like Djokovic.

Dude a drop shot is not a slice, really.

LOL because you don't play tennis, dude.

Anyone who plays tennis will find sometimes a slice unintentionally becomes a dropshot.

WTF? You hit a forehand with underspin? LOL
Which part of "if" didn't you understand?

To further explain to you why you shouldn't discuss this further:
1) https://www.active.com/tennis/articles/the-lost-art-of-chip-and-charge-2445017
For you youngsters who may not know what that is, it refers to when the returner chips or slices the return and follows it in to the net.

2) https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/us/chip_and_charge
An attacking style of play in which the player approaches the net behind a sliced shot (usually a return of serve).

3) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tennis_strategy
When not serving, they often employ the "chip-and-charge", chipping back the serve without attempting to hit a winner and rushing the net.

4) https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/chip_and_charge
A weak groundstroke followed immediately by an advance towards the net.

Please keep humiliating yourself. You're doing a great job.
