Muscle soreness, how to you guys combat this?

I tend to get very and sore (where your muscles are all knotted up from the damage you've inflicted upon them!) when returning after any time off from either working out or the now occasional bash...but I've always struggled to find ways to relieve the tension, bar self heal and time.
I suppose getting hold of a deep tissue massage would be good. But anyone have any other remedies they utilise?
 
To speed up the healing process and to get rid of lactic acid, make sure to drink lots of water the day or 2 after intense workout. Extra Vitamin C won't hurt either.
