Musetti is the real deal !

Well I don't like hyping youngsters but this guy reminds me young Fraud of 2000-01. A lots of similarities in playing style. One hander and all court Tennis still has future thanks to players like him.
I posted this from the other Musetti thread:

Excellent match.

That guy Alcaraz is a drop shot machine. I think he won all the points where he used it. Such a big talent. And he's 17. I'm very impressed.

Good match from both. One thing is for sure; Musetti can hit drop shots, but Alcaraz just executes them better. Alcaraz should get far on tour. I think top 15 or maybe even top 10 is possible. I just think Musetti's ceiling is higher. Both are great prospects though.

As for Musetti, I'm a fan. I have a bias towards OHBH :p. The reasons I'm a fan of Musetti are that his:

1) FH has snap/whip, not too different from Fedr, but with more spin.
2) His BH is slightly worse than his FH, but not by much, and he seems to hit it with confidence from any position. VERY impressive. Fedr had to work on his BH for years to get it to Musetti's current BH level. Crazy thought .
3) He's not afraid of the net, and seems VERY competent when there. He even looks to attack net often and with great success. A youngster comfortable and winning at net, what a shocking idea :D.
4) He routinely half-volleys shots, and does it well. He looks to stay on the baseline as long as he can, a la Fedr.
5) He can hit every shot in the book; topspin, slice, half-volleys, volleys, and he can improvise well with his one hander from any position (a very pleasant surprise to me, and he's only 18! ). He even hit a shot against Nishikori that is very similar to Fedr's FH dropper from an awkward position at WB12 (see below):

He gets the nod of approval.

I hope that he develops into something big. He needs to work on hitting his shots consistently deep as right now they look a bit underpowered and inconsistent to be really a top 10 player. His serve could also use a bit of power, but his disguise is great, which is a great promise.

That backhand DTL winner at 1.48 was very federer like. Nishikori was impressed so was I !

If he is Federer Mark 2, Musetti can sit back and endure 5 years of slam drought winning his first at about the age of 22; also hope that the stars are aligned so that he can enjoy a period of weak era to stockpile his titles and weeks at #1 before some other young gun or two turn up to challenge him.

If Dimi is Baby Fed then Musetti must be grandson Fed.

Have you watched either of his matches this week? I never heard of him before he beat Stan, but this guy’s the real deal. He has variety, flare, charisma.... watch him, he’s exciting!

He is very very impressive. He was even more impressive against Kei last night. All I'm saying is, if he is the 2nd or 3rd coming of Federer that's the scenario he can look forward to. Let him be his own man. He is Musetti not a replica of Federer. After all, Federer wasn't an instant success and this guy might just be.

A qualifier is like a trojan horse; you never know what you are going to be up against. I'm sure Stan thought he had a routine match to ease himself out of lockdown but got a beat down instead.

Don't worry, he'll be like Rafa and win most of his titles on one surface while relying on weak draws to win on the other surfaces (y)

We don't always have to pair new talent up with previous generations. He has a OHBH so he is the new Fed?

Gasquet was the original baby Fed, Musetti is 4th generation

Funny. 5th Gen is on the way in Leo and Lenny ;).

But a bit more serious, Dimi was aptly called baby Fedr bc if you only look at his silhouette during play, he DOES resemble Fedr very much. The problem was that Dimi was just Fedr-lite in every category (i.e. serve, FH, BH, mentality), except maybe court-coverage. Of course there hasn't been a large sample size for Musetti yet, but from these 2 matches, it seems he has most of what Dimi lacked when compared to Fedr (i.e. Musetti has more powerful serve(?) & FH, more powerful & consistent BH, better metality, movement about the same, Dimi has better slice I think). I wasn't 100% behind Tsits, so I'm just glad Musetti shows some promise, and his game resembles Fedr's more. Tsits' game is more like Kuerten's I think?

agree, i like dimi a lot and expectations aside he's had a pretty good career. big difference from what i've seen, i guess you could call it the flow between movement and shotmaking. similar, yes, to federer, his game feels very coordinated--movement away from the ball, transitioning to the stroke, it all feels like one piece. makes him a good finisher of points too.

there's never a 'next' anyone or anything as someone posted here...so not saying he's fed 2.0 but 'fed w a dash of kuerten' is kind of what i'm seeing.

Agree. 'Flow' is a great word that you used. Musetti's game 'flows'. Fedr's game just 'flows', but he destroys you... with grace like a ballerina ;).

Musetti, we need you to 'flow' :D.

Maybe i'm a little to hard on judging him although i'm italian, but i'm not seeing that much potential to make me think in a couple of years he will be in the top 10. I don't really liked how he played in Rome, too many dropshot too much spin on forehand and back hands resulting in short attachable balls and not the best surve. Pretty much the classis clay kind of course a bit dated perhaps. Yes he is 18 but he really needs to work hard otherwise he ll be just another average italian player.

As an Italian, do you favor Sinner more than Musetti?

I'm in the US, but have watched quite a few Sinner matches and actually had a chance to meet him. I feel like Sinner has more potential to be a top 5 player and win Slams. He moves well, has a calm composure under pressure, and has that easy power that you see from top talents.

(Not that I don't think Musetti will have a good career. I've only seen him play twice. It's great that Italy has so many young talents right now with Sinner, Musetti, and Berrettini. Seems like Italy and Canada will rule tennis in the next 5 years.)

Yes i do like Sinner more. BTW i'm in the US too. :)
Sinner to me falls in the sae category of style and power player like Zverev but not yet that good. He is young as well but he has been working hard over the covid break and we got some results back. He needs to win a few big matches to get the confidence and flip the switch in my opinion.
Of all them i'm still thinking Fognini is the best. If he is fine physically he will eat them up.
However time is on the youngsters side here so i hope they will do something good but they won't win much, besides maybe Berrettini. But hey if Schiavone and Pennetta won a major maybe even the guys could do it:)

Clay, I'm happy you're a fan of Musetti! He played poorly today but possibly because of his shoulder. I look forward to watching more of Musetti, he really captured by imagination this week.
I wouldn't go that far. It's refreshing to see young talent like that coming up.

Seems to me he is still a clay specialist. Big, looping FH swing for max topspin and spinny, loopy safe kick serves (even for 1st serve) look like a clay specialist from the 90s. He has good hand at the net though, which is a skill that is not easy to develop, so if he fixes his FH and serves a little, he should do well on other surfaces. He is still only 18, so may evolve into a complete player if he works hard, who knows?

Well, I enjoyed watching Musetti, but he lacks the one thing necessary to be at the top at the moment, which is endurance. Three matches and the guy was too "sore" to win. Build the endurance and I think he's got a shot. Without it, he'll just be another in a long list of guys we all hoped would be great.

His upper arm got sore in his last match. He needs to use heavier racquet to overcome the effect of vibration onto his arm.

At TTW, it is always about the ‘racquet or strings’ - every loss and every injury comes down to equipment always.

Yesterday Musetti looked tired. He played 11 matches in 20 days, maybe he is not used to that. Koepfer played cleverly, he realized that rallies gave troubles to Musetti and used that to win. He was also very consistent on break points.
