Musetti needs to step into the court if he ever wants to win big

Watching his match against Tabilo in the final, it was painful to see how he retreats towards the back of the court without any pressure being exerted onto him by his opponent. Instead of patrolling the baseline, he simply gave that away to his opponent, who not only was able to cut off the angles, but was also getting a lot of short loopy balls that were landing just past the service line. This sort of approach isn't the way, he is forcing himself to cover a lot more ground than he should on relatively faster surfaces, which then impacts his stamina.

It is not so surprising that Lorenzo has often run out of gas. The guy can unload when he wants to, but when he is that far back, he is often having the hit higher loopy balls just to clear the net, and the consistent depth is lacking. For someone who has the shades of Federer, and looked up to him as an example on how to mould his own game, he forgot to look at two key aspects that made Federer so damn deadly, his ability to rob other players of time to suffocate them and his ability to patrol the baseline and always look to using his aggressive game to dictate points.

Now, I'm not saying Lorenzo needs to be like Federer, he is his own player, but if you do look at him and want to emulate what made him Godly, it is more than just hitting pretty backhands, and showing that charismatic flair. Federer of course when he needed to had to grind and was an incredible defender in his own right, but he took every chance he got to get his kill shot in.

I like the Moose and want him to succeed, but he needs to take a long hard look at how he approaches each point, look at his positioning, instead of stepping back, he should look to step forward. With Sinner and Alcaraz here to stay, what he currently has is not good enough even though he has the potential to get so much better.

Also, Musetti is a slow starter in matches. Often has to catch up.

He has a natural game for taking initiative more often.

A lot of that I think is connected to simply how he plays the game. An aggressive mindset means you are off to the races a lot more earlier in the match, because you wish to impose your game and dictate. Moose is often trying to figure how much flight the ball needs when he is so far back. Instead to trying to take the ball more on the rise or at the top of the bounce, he waits for the descension of the ball, which also allows his opponent to quickly get their adjustments done.

Lorenzo can clearly play aggressive, I've seen him do it many times, but its almost like his default factory settings simply override everything and he just looks to get all defensive.

I thoroughly concur with your analysis. However it is not easy for some players ( looking at you Zed and Musetti) to step out of their comfort zones , be more aggressive and flatten the forehand and backhand. I think it is more of a mental issue. Murray struggled as well until Lendl took him under his wings and forced him to step in and be more assertive

Maybe he needs a Lendl like figure then, someone he respects enough that not doing what they say simply isn't an option.

Lendl is coaching innured Hurkacz right now xd. Maybe Norman would be a good choice or Macci. Someone who forces him to be more aggressive. Flashy backhand simply aint enough
