I've been sort of nervously saying that Musetti is having a better year, but now with Rune's Slam season in the books it's very safe to say that Musetti is just better right now.

Rune at Slams:

AO 2R loss to Cazaux in 4
RG 4R loss to Zverev in 5
Wimbledon R16 loss to Djoko in 3
USO 1R loss to Nakashima in 3

Musetti at Slams:

AO 2R loss to Van Assche in 5
RG 3R loss to Djoko in 5
Wimbledon SF loss to Djoko in 3
USO: active

So Musetti has been as far or further in every Slam draw except for RG

He made a slam SF and made F of Queen's

Oh and he won his final Olympic match to get a bronze for his country

Neither has won a title this year, Rune ranked 15/Musetti 18. Each has made one F; Musetti at Queen's (500) and Rune at Brisbane (250).

Rune obviously got a better start to the year but Musetti has had the far better season since, and I'm thinking he's actually the better player at the moment.

Hate to be that guy. But I put them in the same category. Talent young guys with a solid top 20 future and the best results they will ever have is a slam final if lucky.

Nothing wrong with that.

If I had to choose I think Mugsetti has the biggest upside. He is losing to top dogs more often.

More or less agree but I think either of them could win a Slam if the draw cooperates

Musetti was stopped at 2/3 majors this year by Djoko, the consensus GOAT

Have to imagine he would have beaten almost anyone else and reached the F

Rune has huge game

He has lost it but natural abilities remain

Musetti is just a mug. Good on clay but even there not good enough.

So explain his grass results this year?

Djokovic was 21 by the time he had reached both a Wimbledon SF and a Queen's F

Musetti was 22

Its not explainable

RBA reached semis and this guy did. Didn't even take a set vs Djokovic playing below his level. He just doesn't have capabilities that rune already showed he had.

Not much upside.

Mug era. That's the simplest way to describe it.

Let's not forget that Musetti got destroyed by a 37 year old injured Djokovic.

He may be better than Rune, but this guy isn't setting the bar very high.
With a good backhand, Musetti can be a top 10 player.

So you agree with me. lol

Musetti is 22 and the only players his age or younger ranked ahead of him are Sinner, Alcaraz, Shelton and Rune in that order

I agree that Musetti is better than Rune.

But Lorenzo Musetti is awful for a top player.

Losing to a 37 year old Djokovic on your best surface, twice in the same season...

Imagine Guillermo Coria losing to Pete Sampras twice on clay.

The last sentence is about Roland Garros, right? Hard to imagine Musetti would have beaten Alcaraz at Wimbledon were they on the same side of the draw.

By the way, Rune went further than Musetti at Roland Garros, which isn't what you say in your OP.

Terrible analogy, Sampras never won RG and got past the QF one time

Djoko is probably the second-greatest clay-court player in history, no?

He's Italian. We know what that means right?

He and Sinner are definitely not the same

Musetti has more testosterone in his little finger than doped Binner will ever have

His summer '24 was the best of any player not named Carlos

Rune has the highest ceiling and he shows it in glimpses. It's very rare and extremely inconsistant, but it's there.

He's a nutcase and he keeps ploclaiming his rise to the top. Even yesterday at US Open his coach said to the media the goal is for Rune to be the best in the world. Just before losning clearly in 3 sets.

He makes himself the laughing stock again and again. It's not easy to a fan...
At least the Sinner fans have been quiet for a few days. Damn they have been a nuisance towards Rune.

Musetti is a great player and he's clearly the better player atm.

Lol at pushune having the highest celing with that Sara Erraniesque FH , Rune is the most overrated mug of last 10 years. Btw Rune deserve being ridiculed by every fanbase.

Because Musetti has improved and Rune declined but Rune already played better 2 years back. Both have not shown incredible game yet.

I remember when Rune made Zverev look like a school kid who picked up a racket for the first time. All tears and excuses.

I don't think so. Djokovic is not better than Borg and Nadal on clay. He's probably not better than Wilander and Kuerten would be close. So would Rosewall and Laver.

Pete won the Italian Open in 1994 and he managed to defeat Jim Courier (one of the best clay court players of that decade) at the French Open in 1996.

Contrary to what many people claim, he was not completely inept on that surface.

Musetti was always greater, just injuries set him back about 18 months.

Rune is by far the most interesting young player.
Every time he loses a match, you have people coming out of the closet to slam him.

Fans of Musetti, Sinner, Zverev etc all use Rune as an example of how great their player is. There are literally ten times more post about Rune than Musetti, and most comments are just venomous.

Sure. I get it. It's fun to kick down. Hey, it's even natural. You pick the guy with talent who failed and you slam him and It's good fun.

The moment you deny Rune has an extremely high ceiling that's the moment I think you must be blind, deaf and dumb.

There’s a reason why I ignore that poster.
Rune was 7-1 against top 5 players in his first 8 matches. Rune is 3-15 against top 20 players in the last 18 matches.
I can’t remember I ever saw such a decline in level from a 19 year old to 21 years old in any sport. Shapovalov comes close but Runes’s decline is mindblowing.

This is not about tennis iq, forehand, ceiling or injuries. This is a mentally broken kid. The tennis podcast called it “the Holger Rune and the hamster wheel of doom”.

I just turned 73 last week. Some posters here know that already. I think only poster here older than me is Sampras Bruguera, he's around 80

People in 70s cannot be as aggressive as you are in posts, since you said you are a fan of Maradonna and watched him live if you say you are 50+ then that is sellable but 70+? Of course you could be 70+ too but normally when we read posts of @Gary Duane or @SystemicAnomaly or someone like that then they give out the calm vibes of veterans who are 60-70, no energy to fight over trivial things etc etc. By the way, Sampras Bruguera is close to 50, he is not 80 in any way, people who are 80 again don't post like he does. That having said, hard to know for sure how old anyone is or who is posting behind the ids... everything is just a guess... !!!

Let's wait and see if Musetti is able to sustain his form longer than couple of months. Comparing one players worst (post injury) season to anothers best doesn't seem fair.

Yes you are absolutely right about this. In the absence of any other evidence I will blame the coaching of his parents.

People over 70 are the most aggressive people online. By far. It's age, entitlement and a general degeneration in the frontal lobe resulting in reduced empathy.

Funny you'd bring this up now, as they are literally tied to a tee in the race... Muso needs to beat Kec - not a gimme - in order to move ahead...
