My beef with Nike

Nike makes some great stuff, and I love re releases

Lately I've been trying to find some air tech challenge ii

I have found some and might get them, but I ran across color ways and such on social media that made me a little upset

There was an Australian open color way, all white and blue with orange, this was not my problem

My problem is Nike releases these shoes in such a limited quantity and in such a way, that only sneaker heads get them, not true tennis fans.

I tried to get the uso ones last August but I couldn't get any and they sold out in 2 minutes

My beef with Nike is that they re release tennis items from many of your childhoods and put stuff out that many people want....but do it in a way that the true lovers of these iconic designs...can't get them

To see random "swaggots" have a pair of limited edition Australian open air tech challenges is absurd as they don't even know who wore the shoe or what the Australian open is

I petition that Nike makes these items in quantities that will satisfy sneaker heads who only care about collectibles, and real sports lovers who wished for the iconic items to come back.

How do 'sneakerheads' get them before tennis players? Is their a priority pre-order or something? Do people wait in line like they black friday?

They wait in line at the stores for a day or so, I saw it in New York

And they are the majority of the people waiting at 8:50 to buy them at 9 from the Nike website

Yeah, Nike has created a model in which they want the sneaker-heads camping out and buying up and reselling rare models. Apparently, some guys make a living by reselling rare models.

Seems odd to me, but the economics of it must make sense. The resellers have created a whole culture that hypes up Nike shoes and have made Michael Jordan into a billionaire.

I've never liked Nike shoes so I'm immune to the whole thing.

Yeah, Nike has created a model...
Just like Apple - every product sells out immediately to create buzz. They claim the supply chain 'couldn't keep up' - sure.

...and have made Michael Jordan into a billionaire...
I guess you missed the story. Actually Fat Steve Balmer made MJ a billionaire (on paper). When Stevie overpaid for the Clippers, it (artificially - no offense to Carolineans but the Hornet's aren't in LA) inflated his net worth due to his % ownership of the team. He obviously makes very good money from Nike - but has to pay taxes - and had a costly divorce.

I hear you but your problem doesn't seem to be with getting the actual retro re-release shoes - those are easy to get - but that you can't acquire the limited edition version. I wish I could get the special slam ones too but they would be difficult to acquire even if it was JUST tennis shoe collectors swarming for them. If you just want the re-release with the colorway that Andre actually wore, they are readily available and not expensive. I picked up the blue/pink/grey ones for like 80 bucks a while back.

Didn't know that about Jordan. Didn't realize it was so recent, but yeah, most of the money Jordan has made originally come out of the Nike Air Jordan brand which still is by far the leading basketball shoe.

I never understood the Nike collecting. I guess if you stumble upon the right rare pair you can actually profit. I don't think that collecting the tennis shoes is going to be a wise long term decision. I'd rather toss the money in the market or precious metals or something.

There are plenty of good tennis shoes on the market that have nothing to do with Nike.

I don't think that's bad. I think the way tennis shoes are made is extremely shameful.

I'm a sneakerhead and collect a lot of Nike's and Jordan's. Not a reseller, but definitely a collector. It's more a fun hobby than anything. Similar to people who pump money into their cars; they know they aren't getting it back.

I can understand that, as long as you don't go crazy.

Did you see that dude in San Diego who had a warehouse filled with Nike Shoes? He had the most complete private Nike collection in the world. Last I heard he'd moved it to Vegas and was trying to sell it off.

Interesting thing is that Michael Jordan was obsessed with Adidas and only went to Nike because they offered him the big $s.

+1. And KD was the opposite. He loved Nike growing up and - to the horror of his agent and family - took less $$ from Nike than Adidas was willing to pay.

The only reason to buy Nike is because Fed/Nad wears them. Other companies produce cheaper and better products.

Adidas didn't exact make great tennis shoes compared to Nike after the barricade 6s

The 7s seemed to be a hit or miss, too stiff and uncomfortable for me

And the 8s

Well enough said

The new barricades are the only shoes that Ive liked in 6 years from Adidas

During that time Nike made the vapor tours that were very comfortable and the court ballistecs which were durable and well fitting

Yep..I agree

I'm not a shoehead but really hate how the shoes I couldn't get as a kid that I would now like are next to impossible for me to get unless I want to pay 3x or more for the shoe.

I'd love a pair of Jordans IV - VI & the Vapor AJ3's but good luck unless I want to spend at least $400 - 800 a pair.

Honestly with the popularity why not just offer them as a special order, tack on some additional cost and call it a day. I'd pay more for them but not the insane mark up that's currently out there.

Haha yup! Funny I actually know some people that were in contact with that guy in Vegas. Dude wanted way too much dough for such a bulk collection though. He had some good stuff but he'd be better off parting it out.

Nike needs to be better to their customers who want these items, a mark up to 180$ for a pair of retro air flair that has a memorable colorway would be awesome

just make them preorder and give people the opportunity to buy them

Would be nice - at least then we'd know we had a shot - not like I was going to jump on a plane to fly to NYC to get in line for the V9/Air shoes. Online, at least we have some slight chance (still plenty of people using bots to get to the front of those lines too). But as others have pointed out, Nike likes the lines in front of stores - it generates buzz.

adidas actually figured out a way to combat the online sneakerheads

they created a lottery for special edition socker boots, so you would sign up online with the intent to buy them and then you would recieve an email that gave you a link to purchase the shoes

a lottery system like that would be best as it gives everyone a fair shot

the adidas model i think worked just as well, many pro soccer players sported limited edition yamamoto stuff

then they had a lottery and the stuff sold at 140$ i believe above the normal shoe

as long as they make a good product, there will be demand and limited releases will be sought after

I understand it's frustrating, but if you keep an eye on what and when shoes are being released you can get most things.

You guys don't know how lucky you are living in the USA for Nike releases. I have to rely on friends helping me out or the dreaded 'bay.

Incidentally there are a load of ATC II's on the 'bay, including US Open and French Open for under $250, so it's not that bad.

I have 3 problems with Nike right now.

#1 Costs keep going up on the shirts, etc. Not something they can really control, as a ton of factors go into the pricing of apparel, but still annoying.

#2 Their color scheme the last 2 years has been questionable at best. I'm not digging some of the stuff they've thrown together. Makes me very disinterested in buying any of the Fed/Nadal gear. And some of the designs are equally as outrageous.

#3 This is the big one for me and one I hate the most, but I really despise them for shortening the length on virtually all their shorts... I have to resort to getting those Net woven shorts in the 11 inch length. Granted those are some fantastic shorts, and I have about 4 in black, 3 in white, 2 in grey and 2 in Navy, but it would be nice to actually buy the Fed/Nadal shorts and not look like a tool from the 80's playing in short shorts... I can't stand that they did that. Stupidest decision ever on their part. Who the **** wants to wear 7 inch shorts? Seriously? We're in 2015, not 1986....

Times change. Fashions change. I remember how much I hated wearing long baggy shorts when they first became popular. With all the material it felt like a weight dragging around your waist bc there was so much extra material. You'll get over it just in time for something new to come out and replace them

I play way more basketball that tennis these days and nike elite shorts are looooooong. Super comfy though. That being said, I still like 7 inch inseem for tennis, Different styles for different spots. It honestly doesnt bother me one way or the other. I notice if anything, that bball shorts have a bit better ventilation for the boys, but it is not a massive difference.

Nah, I'll just continue to buy the 11 inch net woven shorts, or if Nike completely loses their minds and refuses to make any pair of shorts for tennis in a length greater than 9-10 inches, then they will lose my business forever and always. I'll switch over to Adidas, or some other apparel company that suits my needs.

I personally like the short shorts....but I'm a 17 year old with 8% body fat and legs of a serious athlete , if I was older I wouldn't wear them at all

The recent Nike designs were really terrible...this year has been....bad to say the least

I hope OP found the shoes he wanted. The Slam-specific ATC2s have tanked in price compared to what they were in 2015. The Oz pair still draw a big profit, but the other 2014 models are pretty affordable on FleaBay.

I found a pair of deadstock 2014 French Opens for $80.

Straight ignorance^ Nike had lottery releases way before Adidas. I've gotten multiple pairs off the SNKRS app(including the AJ1 Banneds). It's hilarious you guys whining about people getting the shoes that obviously care about them a lot more than you do.

Seriously why would they want to combat sneakerheads? The people that care about the shoes more than anyone else. They want to fight bot resellers, that's what the lotteries are for.

I mean, the retro tennis classics barely find their way into tennis player hands and there aren't pottery for those, lotterys are maybe done for some Nikes but I've never seen it done.

I also highlighted thebreselling issue, that's my biggest pet peeve honestly.

The retro tennis classics(ESPECIALLY the Air Tech Challenge lines) are only even made because of their status with sneakerheads. And outside of the AJ3's none of them are hard to get.

I think that is the Nike plan to get everyone to buy more apparel. Look at the color schemes over the last three years. They are dreadful. I'm not talking even about styles – just look at the color combinations!

This year alone, they had matched with Kelly green for the Australian open and in the fall they are planning on using a color called punch (hot pink) with red. New color for fall is called Stardust Red which looks like flesh color - possibly the worst color I've ever seen used in tennis clothes!

Who would want to wear the stuff for more than three months if at all? It almost looks like they're designing this apparel as a joke. Just awful!

Yeah the official outfits this year have been dreadful. Seriously just compare Fed awful AO and USO outfits this year to his:

06, 07, 09, 12 AO
07, 09 USO
06 Rome
07 Wimbledon
12 Cincy
09, 11 RG

Just a few amazing outfits from the top of my head.

Still, I think the generic Henley polos are ok. The blue, sky blue, white are all good colours and fit nicely. But I still prefer classic collar style polos over anything.

Those shorts he wore for that clay court season in 2011, were probably my absolute favorite RF shorts ever. Simple design, with the white color, black swoosh and border around the pockets. I found a guy selling some on **** a year or so ago, so I ordered 2 more pairs. I had to get medium, so they're a little big. I usually wear them when I'm hanging out at home, working out at home, or running errands, but they're some of my favorite shorts. I can't really play in them though, because they won't really stay up for me to run and make lateral cuts/changes of direction. :(

Why people continuously throw their hard earned money at Nike is beyond me. They clearly lack quality and prices are unjustifiable. Stop eating up all the trashes they throw at you.

Force of habit, perhaps. There was a time that they were the best stuff out there.
