Assuming the 4 majors and the Olympics are happening, I’m throwing out these 5 predictions.
1. Djokovic will win Australia, Wimbledon, and the US Open: I’m a huge believer in history repeating itself and 10 years on from his triumphant 2011 season, Djokovic is still world number one. He’ll be hungry to prove himself in Melbourne and that should drive him for the rest of the season and he’ll tie Federer at 20.
2. Federer will beat Djokovic in the French Open semis: Roger is long overdue for a big win over Novak in the majors and with his return to RG, I foresee a similar result to 2011. Novak riding a lot of momentum and Roger stopping him in his tracks. Which leads to prediction #3.
3. Nadal will win the French Open by beating Federer in the finals, setting the all-time major record: Would there be a more story book ending? Federer will fight valiantly, but no one can stop the God of Clay in the French Open final. Plus, the passing of the baton between the two GOATs, friends, and rivals will be lovely to witness.
4. Federer will win the Olympic gold in singles to add to his accolades: The biggest hole in Roger’s resume is his lack of an Olympic singles gold. The stars aligned with him when the coronavirus pushed the Tokyo Olympics back a year. I think this is his time. Unless prediction 4a happens.
4a. Murray wins his third straight Olympic gold: If he does, MuryGOAT.
5. This will be Federer’s last full season: All good things must come to an end. At 40, Federer has already cemented his legacy. He may or may not go out on top, but he will be missed after he retires.
Discuss.
