My Day at the Pacific Life Open...

I got there at about 8 30 am, half an hour before the gates opened, and once they did began my very fun and interesting day of tennis. I immediately went to the practice courts and watched some of the lower ranked players warm up....then I went to a stage area where they had Mikhail Youzhny doing a Q/A session....

after that I went back to the practice courts and was watching Nicolas Kiefer warm up when all of a sudden I see a man w/ a backwards black hat and flowing blonde locks.....

Hewitt it was..... :) I watched him for probably about 10 minutes or so.....when one practice court up....another pretty good player was warming up.....

Federer.....the crowd was big so I didn' bother staying much....so I walk around.....and who do I see but Lindsay Davenport on the next court up as well as Carlos Moya on the next court over....I thought I was in heaven......until

on this little grass field a TALL russian girl was jogging around.....very lanky and akward running style.....but yes, it was Miss Sharapova :)

My friends and I decided to go take a little break...while watching Federer from a distance as he must have practiced for at least two hours.....and out comes a VERY tall individual....some of you might recognize him, Mark Phillipoussis.......I was able to get a picture of him, which was great.

Mary Pierce and Amelie Mauresmo came out almost right after one another and then.......a lot of children were mobbed around a certain tennis player with salt and peppered hair...somewhat tall as well, by the name of Tood Martin...amazing how he was getting ppl saying 'you shouldn't have retired' and stuff like that

I was basically doing nothing until I saw at the Tennis Warehouse tent that Tommy Haas was going to sign autographs.....so I waited in line and he did just that.

There was a little Q&A session with Taylor Dent and Lisa Raymond, and when they left, Lindsay Davenport took their place......

There was an exhibition to raise funds for tsunami victims, featuring the top men's pros doing a single tie breaker.....

first match = Nalbandian vs Coria.....very nice tie breaker to watch as both were doing trick shots and just having fun.....Nalbandian won

second match = Srichaphan vs Henman......it was nice to see Henman doing his good old serve and volleying versus the talented Thai.....Srichaphan won

third match = Roddick vs Safin.....this was really funny....both were joking around....and at one point Roddick gets right to the net and Safin taking it easy, gives him about 4-5 volleys and Roddick makes them all....he then aces Safin and people 'boo'....and he states, 'hey, I just made four volleys in a row!' nice to know he's got a sense of humor.....then Safin and Roddick bet money to try and ace each other...at one point the chair umpire states...Andy, 150.....he 'only' hit 148.....Roddick won

fourth match = Hewitt vs Moya.......this was also a good match.....Hewitt and Moya at one point start volleying very close to one another, going from baseline to basicaly the net....and when Hewitt was down three- one in the tie breaker.....he did it, yes.....'COME ON!'.....Hewitt won

fifth match = Agassi vs Federer.....it was nice to see the the two guys going at it very well....and having a fun time at it.....Andre would taunt Roger calling him the most overrated player of all time and stating the fact that Fed's isn't a legendary player....(at least now yet), and he would also call Fed's serve and forehand weak and made fun of the fact that Feds was constantly fixing his hair.....the other tie breaker matches were first to 7....this one was specially changed....and Agassis won 11-9

overall it was a REALLY good day.....and I got a lot of autographs from my favorite players, Hewitt, Federer, Davenport and too many others to list...

Thanks for an interesting recap, dude. Sounds like lots of fun. It's good to hear about how the players relate to each other outside of real competition.

Hope you go back and have more fun. And tell us about it.

HEy guys, check out this pictures of the exhibition..

Funny as helll

yes, he received the most attention out of any of the pros.....Hewitt's crowd was somewhat large as was Davenport's crowd, but those two combined probably equaled Fed's crowds.......but Todd Martin had a 'crowd' of his own.....;) , but wow, before this, I liked Hewitt, but didn't like his 'COME ON!' factor and how that was 'unsportsman' like....but just looking at him and watching him play....backwards hat and blonde locks, plus his 'thanks mate' after I wished him luck, he's just really cool....you can tell he's confident with himself as a player

Well, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I've been here in IW since Wednesday and I've seen one full match (Kiefer v Sargisian), and bits and pieces of other matches. I spend a lot of time at the practice courts, I guess, and I'm kind of a wimp for sitting in the stands in this intense heat. I did stand in line to get the photo Tommy Haas was giving away, and he just laughed at me when he saw me walk up to the table. I'll try to see a few more matches tomorrow since it will be my last day here probably.

One of my favorite things about IW is this huge patch of grass next to the practice courts. Some type of pickup soccer game always breaks out there at some point in the day. It's fun to see the players form their teams and if Marat shows up he yells instructions in all kinds of languages. The other day Arthurs, Hanley, Jordan Kerr and another Aussie I can't remember were playing around with an Aussie rules ball and Jordan's kick bounced near me. I jokingly told him it was all fun and games until someone got hurt. He laughed and ran off, telling me he was still hoping to make the Doubles draw (he did). If you can stand the heat (and the chill after the sun goes down), I strongly recommend this tournament to anyone.

Wow atariboy, you must have played a lot of video games with good plot buildup! That was fun to read! What an all-star ensemble you got to witness!

thank you Raftermania......it was quite fun, I actually take writing classes in school, so I can write a decent story or two....haha

Fee, I was at the Tommy Haas signing at the TW tent as well.....I probably saw you there too....bummer, but yes, that patch of grass is quite nice, as that's where they do play soccer w/ a tennis ball or as I saw with Sharapova, jog and warm up....I mean, I haven't been to any other tennis venues.....but this one seems to be very fan friendly, most players walk themselves out to the practice courts and only use a cart to get back to the player's lounge...and just the access that people have at this event is nothing like a baseball, basketball, football or hockey(remember this sport) game.....I fell in love with watching tennis after I attended this for the first time in 1995.......and as long as I live 20 minutes away.....I will continue to go!

Awesome tourney. I just spent the weekend there. Its really cool to stay at Hyatt Grannd Champions, where most of the players stay. We'd go to have breakfast and there were bunches of players having breakfast just a few yards away; Fed, Bryans, Johanssons, Bjorkman, Stepanek, Rusedski, Mauresmo, Llodra. They all seemed like normal, although very fit people. Mauresmo had two of the little boxes of Frosted Flakes. While getting fruit, i asked Joachim Johanson who he plays today (Sunday). He said, with a heavy accent, Santoro. I proceeded to give him my strategy thoughts on playing the speedy spinmaster. Just kidding. I wished him good luck and went to the omelette bar. He's very tall, i mean i'm 6'5" and don't have to look up (or straight across) to many people like that. I didn't see Ivo Karlovic at the hotel. Poor Scheng Shalken was sitting all by himself at breakfast and since he wasn't on the fight card for the day so I wanted to go ask him if he'd be up for a hit. I figured i'd be able to return his serve since he has basically no knee bend. But i chickened out and decided to leave him be.

I hope i didn't jinks JJohanson as he ended up losing to Santoro. After a few bad volley errors, I wondered if JJ actually volleys better than Roddick. Maybe slightly. Late in the third, JJ hit a drop volley, and Fabrice scampered all the way across town to hit a sweet lob winner. He was pumped.

James Blake got a major gift. 3rd set TB, Davydenko serving at 6-5, hits a double. Switch sides. Hits another double. Blakes wins next point on serve. He should send a thank you card. Now he plays Gonzo, as i predicted. Don't ya ust hate it when you get to MP in a TB and hit two DF's. OUCH!!

Safin Niemenen match was freakin awesome. Jarkko was a lefty wall back there. He came up with some running FH passing shots that were unbelievable. But they kept going down the line and Safin picked up on that. Safin serving at 15-40 down 4-5 in the third. Second serve musta just clipped the back of the line. I thought it was out. Second MP, he comes up with a volley off a rocket forehand - fabulous. He held serve and a little more success at the net seals the deal. Whew!!!

I could go on and on. So many 3rd set TB's, like Roddicks. Really good stuff.

If you live in CA or anywhere in the vicinity - Go to Pac Life Open!!! Middle weekend is awesome, all the women and men. The hard part is that you want to watch more than one match at a time and picking one. Bring a big shade hat and lots of water - it can really swelter. Tip - from the east side of stadium two, at the top of the seats, you can see 4 matches simultaneously - remember to only clap for stadium 2 match.

Oh yeah, another highlight. While switching courts, i came upon (almost literally) Nicole Vaidisova. In a craddle robber sort of way, i found her drop dead gorgeous. I said, "Hi, i missed your match with Sprem today, how'd it go?" She replied, "vell, i von". I said good job and put up my hand for a high 5. would she respond or would i be left hangin and feeling foolish. I gentle high five later, i was flyin hi. I haven't washed my hand yet, and it smells really good still. She's my new favorite chick player. I hope she whoops Pierce.

Adios.
