My Experience at ****...

So i went to **** today there were some pretty interesting things in there and here are my experiences:

-first off i noticed that there were none of those blue babolat stringers found on their website, instead they must have been replaced by a silver colored stringer with a red mount? Im not sure what brand but will look when i return later.

-I decided on the genuine leather grip instead of the synthetic leather because, according to Roman, its so thin that even with an overgrip added it would only equal your original feel of the grip. Get that??? Anyways to my suprised their leather really wasnt much heavier than the Gamma Hi-tech i was using before.

-In the back Roman showed me all the pros racquets, Sharapova, Haas, Ljubicic, Roddick, you know the deal. But what really stuck out to me was when during he was naming all the racquets and who used them i saw a Ti-80 with a leather grip, which i thought was pretty attractive. Immediately i asked him if it was Srichapans? He said no it belonged to Ancic, then i asked so where Srichapans? He pointed to a Yonex that i had never seen before, it was orange, an almost tannish orange with dark brown accents, shaped very similiar to the Ti-80. I asked him i thought he used to Ti-80 but he said no he just switched. Then i realized it was clearly a new racquet Yonex must be putting out next year, a successor to the Ti-80. It had the exact model printed on there but i didnt get close enough to see, didnt really want to invade...BTW his butt cap is built up HUGE, Roman also mentioned he doesnt use a replacement grip at all but only an overgrip. Not sure about the releases of this racquet but Roman guessed perhaps next years Aus Open, but even he wasnt sure.

-They do do painjobs, but cost several hundred dollars depending on the circumstances, i asked about plain black and even that costs hundreds.

-a stringjob can range from $20-$63 if i remember correct.

I placed an order with him to get me another Fischer M-speed Pro, he told me he matched TW pricing and since i was already going to get another one when i returned to Florida, why not? Anyways, hell call me when he gets hold of the racquet and ill go back to pick it up, probably get a string job as well. So if anyone has any questions they would like me to ask, list them here, but please dont be too forward with them. Ill try my best to answer.

Wow thank you very much for sharing that experience with us.

You should have asked him what the SW and weight locations were on the pros rackets, that would have been very interesting especially for Haas ect.

Thanks

The machine you saw was probably the "new" Wilson machine that was used at the US Open this year. Pics can be seen at photostringer.com or grand slam stringers.com. Would not be suprised if Wilson gave him the machines or paid him to use them. It would resut in great publicity for Wilson if one of the foremost stringers and customizers to the pros used the Wilson Machine. The deal must have been great for him to get away from the Sensor. Even though I have heard of plenty of bad reports about the sensor. Roman is a very approachable guy and a pleasure to deal with.

You know i would have asked for specifics but again its a little forward, it was my first time meeting the guy but discovered he might not be too private to answer that kind of question. Although i doubt i would remember the numbers even if he told me....:D Ill try if the topic comes up in our conversation. I will tell you though in Haas's box, he had PJ's of the M-fil 300, and these old dunlops strung already(Probably still left to be painted), im not sure exactly what model Dunlop but its just reassuring the fact that he doesnt use the M-fil but an older model for those who still dont know. However there was no Aerogels to be found in his box, could be hes still hitting with them now and deciding if hes actually gonna use them or a PJ(probably PJ).

Are you getting any other stuff done to your racquet?

i.e. matching racquets, weighting it up.

haas is going to be using the aerogel 400 pj. he is very particular about how his racket looks, thats why he had th mfil 300 pj and not the mfill 200

Im getting another M-speed Pro 1 98 from them, having the standard grip replaced to a **** leather grip as well, and getting it strung there. I havent had my M-speeds long enough to start to customize it, so i dont have any ideal specs to go by as of now. But i do visit NY/NJ so often so maybe next visit i will have something to go by, probably spring break. The string job is gonna take a big cut out of the wallet though, hybrids that i usually use will run me about 40 dollars there to string, i might just get a full poly job for 20 and rip it out if it plays bad.

Nextman, thanks for a great post.

When you looked at the pro's racquets you mentioned, did you get an idea what kind of mods were being made on them? Were you looking at stock ones or modded ones? Were there any signs of having been worked on?

so what do you think of the quality of their leather grip. I would think it would be great or just a "platform" to wrap a comfort ground. Does it have tack and stay fresh during play.

I'm glad to see that my predictions of the trip being a waste of time were wrong. Also, nice to hear you had a good time. :)

They were almost all modified, i pretty much doubt any pro would approach Roman to string their racquet only, and even if so he probably would have eventually convinced them to customize it in some way. I didnt see one single frame their with lead tape exposed so he must get it inside the frame somehow, I was kinda bummed about that. He has a workshop area in the back section of the store, thats where he hangs ungripped racquets that have already been modified upon racks with name tags. A very common visual modification was moldings on the handle itself, since the racquets were ungripped. See here for a reference- http://i1.tinypic.com/ztdk6t.jpg Thats not my picture but from a poster named RMB who got his frame customized at ****. That and butt cap modifications were the most common, Sharapova's racquet looked pretty much exact stock to me.

The quality is extremely top notch on their leather grips, much better than the Wilson or Babolat leather grips ive tried in recent times. Its not too tacky but seems to get tackier when slightly wet, It reminds me of a really old Pro Kennex my mom gave me from the 80's from Taiwan. Similiar feel but nothing like the new crap Redondo leathers. Bevel feel is average, but what i really like about it is its thinness for a leather grip and very raw feel. I tried hitting with it for a while without leather but preferred the an overgrip on it, but its certainly playable without one. BTW its gonna cost you $20 a pop for one plus shipping, not that pricey but certainly not cheap.

hey netman did you ask roman how much it would cost to get him to watch you hit and customize a racquet for you?

hahaha, after i found out the pricing for a stringjob and paintjob i kinda got the idea that the shop is very pricey in everything they do, i can only begin to imagine the price one would have to pay for an on court analysis and customization based on that.

The pros keep their specs very secret and he'd be wise not to reveal anything about them to you. IMHO. I've had all my racquets modifed ( weighted and balanced) by Roman and he does an excellent job. he is very fast also. I got all my racquets back within a week of him doing them. I have a few more to send him next month.
BTW does it really matter what specs the pros use? We couldn't compete with them anyway so why worry about that aspect of their game. They definately don't use an "off the shelf" speced racquet.
Just my opinion.

When I suggested that about Federer, a lot of guys were upset. They claimed he would not keep it a secret as he is so good it doesn't matter. Guess they just want to believe that the K90 or whatever is his real racquet.

Well if it does not matter the specs they use then why all the fuss from you?

Here is another tip, they could not compete with their peers if they did not have modified racket, stop! Think about it.

Roger admited that he has his rackets modified as well.

Furthermore Roger has not been playing with tour90s and Ntour90s that are available to you and I, that is a fact that you can see in the racket it's self in all him game play pics

Some people choose ignorance, that is fine with me

I regret to inform you guys....

I may not be able to return to **** before i return to Florida. I had originally placed the order of the M-speed pro with Roman but it was on a very tight deadline, it was placed on the 20th but i needed it strung and ready to go by the 25th in the afternoon. He said he could normally get the racquet for me in 24-48hrs but since Fischer is doing some major changes in their company and reps it would be hard. I ran into the same problem when i bought one in Florida, luckily a rep was in the area and had the exact 3/8's grip size i needed with him. Roman hasnt called me ever since, even though promising once he found out when he could get it. Anyways yesterday i was in Midtown NY again and i went to his store around 5:30 p.m. because last i checked they were open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and it was closed!! Maybe buissness is slow winter time. I was going to cancel my order and just buy 4 or 5 of their leather grips to take home with me to use on future racquets, but now i dont even know if i can do that. If there were any possible time for me to go back it would be in the morning before i went to the airport on the 25th, anyways ill see.

Also ill try to take some pics, of frames maybe even snap a pic with Roman if i do go back, i hope. My dad just got a new cam for Christmas and im still trying to figure it out.

Thanks federer_nadal!
