My Favorite Part(s) about the Laver Cup

Federer and Del Potro

Feeling quite nostalgic tonight and will try to keep this short and sweet. But I'm sure a lot of other people share my sentiments. I have been very pleasantly surprised and enamored by the Laver Cup despite it getting memed and creamed a bit around these parts :p. The matches have all been very fun to watch and the players genuinely look interested for the most part, besides Berdych who probably does the laundry for Team Europe. Jack Sock has been the most animated I've ever seen him. Federer has been the most vocal I've seen him all year. It seems like genuine interest too, it would be hard to feign it.

It's cool to have a stress free tournament that celebrates every single player. It also really seems to humanize them and make them more personable in a weird way. Seeing Federer and Nadal coach Zverev and Thiem was one of the coolest things I've seen in the sport. That was then topped even further seeing Rafa and Federer play doubles together. That was so awesome. I wish more singles powerhouse teams formed in doubles in the majors, for the intrigue if not anything else. But I realize this is too grueling a task to ask for, so it will never happen. That makes it even cooler to see it though, because it's such a rare treat.

This is really a great event for the younger plays like Shaps and Tiafoe too. They get to see their childhood heroes in a much more lax and approachable setting. There's no masters 1000 or grand slam pressure in these matches, so I'd imagine that inherently makes for a much more lighthearted atmosphere. It's like a pressure free Davis Cup, essentially. I mean they want to win, they're athletes. The stakes could be for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and they'd go hard for it. But still. It's just different, the vibe and aura.

It even brought the Nadal/Federer fans together . It's been fun to just talk tennis and enjoy every single player. Really makes you appreciate the sport and the different personalities. And it brings TTW together too, until the next event when we go back to ripping each others heads off.

It just really made me appreciate Tennis in a different way. And I hope Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray and Delpo get to take part next year, because this is a really cool environment and despite the memes against it on this forum, I'm a big fan, personally.

What are your favorite parts of the event? For me it is ultimately the camaraderie it brings, between players and fans alike. And the format is cool. Yes, Team Europe was always the sizable favorite, but I really don't think it's about that. It's about celebrating the sport in a cool and unique way. And if that's the goal or what you want to see as a viewer, the Laver Cup passes with flying colors. Not everything has to be serious and this event does a nice job of that :).

Good Post! Do you think it has a future? Do you think the pros will continue to commit to it each year even after Fedal have retired?

Also, what happens if thinks switch up and the US dominates world tennis again? Should it then switch to USA v team world?

Enjoyed what I saw from the first day. Ended up missing out on Fedal yesterday.

Is Wrestlemania 1 supposed to be a compliment?

Who is the Liberace of today? Need him out to dance during changeovers. Get Cyndi Lauper in as well. :D

Definitely not, mania 1 sucked :p
I'm just referencing it in the way that this is an awesome way to start a yearly tradition with this new tournament and it's definitely something that could be big. Laver Cup 1> Mania 1

That's a great question, I'm really not sure. I'd certainly hope so.

I found it funny how nadal played wta doubles. He is very good at it

Lets not get carried away, we had Fed/Rafa vs Sock/kryios/querry. The outcome was expected, but great entertainment.

Id say it was worth more than an exo since fed wasnt wearing the rolex.

Great thread. In the Fedal press conference Fed actually mentioned the fact of the rival fanbases coming together. I suspect many fans who like the one but don't hate the other feel sometimes excluded on social media and probably came out of the woodwork. And I was moved by Dominic Thiem saying with obvious sincerity that being coached by Federer and Nadal "life doesn't get better than this"

I would think the organisers will be delighted so far but will clearly have to think about the future without the Fedal factor.

Your post pretty much sums it up.
I absolutely love this event and hope that it'll be a success and won't end up like IPTL.

They all seem relaxed and engaged at the same time and most matches are more dramatic than I thought, since team europe is so much better in terms of individual player quality.

Yeah, very good post OP - gotta agree with the points there. I was sceptical about this event at the start of the year but it really delivered in the end. Mainly great to see the support that the players and coaches gave each other and the fact that they gave everything and treated us to some great tennis at times. Interesting format, and nice little weekend set-up like the DC.

Would love to see Novak and Andy involved next year, but the ROW team would need to be REALLY strong in order to take on the entire Big 4.

And also (like I said in the match threads) - not quite part of the group:D

Pointless, cringeworthy exho with a undeservedly impressive name that means absolutely nothing. Gotta hand it to OP though, I doubt many could make it sound more impressive if they tried lmao.

My favorite part is when the world team stepped up in Day 3 to make the Laver Cup the competition it deserves. Also seeing the great Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe there as the captains along with Patrick McEnroe and Thomas Enqvist. Seeing the pride on Rod Laver’s face.

Great post OP.

Some other interesting things I liked...

1. The Black/Charcoal court was awesome!!
2. Net cam was a great addition
3. The points system and increasing importance of matches made this interesting (and kept it so)
4. Donno if it was just Prague, but the venue and arrangements seemed world class.
5. McEnroe coaching Kyrgios. That's a coaching match made in heaven if you ask me after this weekend.
6. Hurray for doubles. I think it doesn't get it's due on the tour and Laver cup will be a great opportunity to showcase it going forward.

That's a really good point. The Fed/Rafa doubles pairing was the big story and their presence (and camaraderie) made the event. It's not a knock on Djoker or Murray, but who would care if they played doubles together or were at this event? It was all the Roger-Rafa show.

For the future I would suggest:

1. Get rid of Borg -Pay him whatever it takes to break the contract.there's a difference between being calm and collected and looking like you don't give a monkey's. It didn't matter this time because Fedal was providing the energy but without them it needs more from the coach. I would suggest Becker.

2. To even things up I'd have a rule that if one team was significantly weaker in terms of ranked players they'd be allowed to choose the players second on all three days.

The only thing questionable about this event was Borg's captain's pick of Berd brain. Sure the event was in Prague so suppose he had to pick him. But no need to play Bendych three times. Bye, bye Berdy as he'll never earn his way or get the pick again.:D

Beautiful format and the third set superbreaker doesn't favor grinding tennis as much so players may easily play more matches including doubles.

The best thing about this event was the mix of young and old due to McEnroe going with NextGen players including the backup Kokkinakis. Brilliant picks as they will be the future of the team. Five of seven players were NextGen for the world team.:p

You have to admit, that Laver Cup gave us some unforgettable Berdy scenes :D Classic classic Berdy scenes from day one. Was worth it.
The selfies he took w the others looks like he has photo bombed the others.
Not to mention the last press conference when he is showing classic Berdy behavior too.

ATP and ITF should put some points against their ranking maybe in the future.
I loved the event and was good to see that Nadal and Fed can be good buddies and that can give some hints to the their own fans that maybe they should get along :D

If you watch the foreign language bit of the press conference (which switches back to English) Federer is actually talking about how he got Berdych on board early because he was local (not that the crowd seemed that keen on him anyway). So I doubt we'll see him in Chicago.

Honestly, this year I'm thinking it really is quite a clever concept.

You want your favourite player to win but you're not heartbroken if he doesn't because like most people, you don't really care who wins between Europe and ROW. So you can enjoy watching them play without too much tension.

If you don't have a fave player you can just enjoy the matches, whilst players probably aren't putting in as much as they would in individual events its not really exhibition stuff - these are naturally competitive people and with their team buddies screaming on the sidelines they're instinctively going to put some welly in.

So you've basically created a format where everyone can watch good tennis without the misery and aggro. Plus lots of cutesy male bonding if that's your thing.

There's a question mark how it will cope with the retirement of the Big Three (and Federer did really well to get Djoko on board) but you can see why its working.
