My Gamma X-2 Mods

I thought I would share what mods I made to my own Gamma X-2. Now it is just the way I like it.

I would be very interested in reading any Gamma x-2 mods that others here have made have done.

Mod 1.

I bought a cheap laptop cart for $35.00 and used the base to mounted my Gamma X-2 on it. I removed the rubber feet on the gamma X-2 and since the brackets that the feet mount to slide, I lined them up to some holes on the stand and tightened them down with M6 bolts.

I had to drill some holes on the laptop stand's base and move the upright support towards the middle for more support.

I like the cart because it is mobile, compact and has height adjustment. It could feel a little bit more study, but it is sturdy enough for me and holds the Gamma X-2 fine. I didn't like the idea of getting a $120.00 Gamma stand.

Mod 2.

I used some tie wraps to mount a pegboard hook to the stand's upright support. I placed my reels of strings that I use. I also mounted a tape measurer to the support as well.

Mod 3.

I added a small tool tray to the back side of the X-2. Since the X-2 has mounting rails along the top of the front and back side,(for the black cutting block feature), I used 2 M6 nuts and 2 M6 bolts to secure the blue plastic tray that I got at Target.

Mod 4.

My most complicated mod was making a working brake for the X-2. I had mentioned in a previous post how I was trying to do it and how I wasn't successful at it. Since then I was able to figure something out and now with a turn of a M8 allen head wrench, I can lock the turntable securely in place and do all of the racquetball racquets that require a brake. (Ektelon O3 and Head IGS type racquets).

Mod 5.

I didn't like the 2 tall support post pins, as I would scrap my hands on them often. These pins are just studs with threads on both ends. So I just bought shorter ones at a hardware store and the threads never go beyond the top of the knobs anymore. I believe they are M8 in size.

Mod 6.

Since I just do racquetball racquets, at times the support adapters that come with the X-2 just don't fit or work. I use them when I can, but there are times you just can't. I put tubing on the support post pins tall enough to protect the racquet surface. When I am done stringing, I then put long pieces of tubing on the support post pins to protect the racquet when removing it from the stringer.

Maybe Gamma can look into adding the tool tray and maybe even a braking device to their next generation X-2 model. Of course not as primitive as what I did. Even better, they can make them as options and charge more money for them.

Heck, maybe I could make a nice tool tray package that has the blue tray with mounting holes, the nuts and bolts and installation instructions and charge a mint for it.

I like your modifications on this model. Makes me wish I still had mine. Sigh!
So what's next? Fixed clamps?
The sky is the limit, but just remember we can beyond the sky!

Thanks ryangoring,

I always did like tinkering around with stuff I buy. The worst that can happen is that I mess it up and might have to buy another.

I think it would really add to the Gamma X-2 for them to put a screw type brake on it. I just did 2 racquets that needed a brake and it was a breeze doing them. Trying to use you hip and having the stringing machine moving around the desk wasn't a pleasant task.

Maybe Gammatech can ask his engineers if a brake is possible and maybe adding on a side tool tray to boot.

I don't see much else I can add or change to it, but heck I will keep looking...

Looks darn good. how much time do you feel you save stringing with the stand up compared to a table?

I don't save time actually stringing on the stand compared to a table.

What I get out of the X-2 being on a stand is ...

1. I can adjust the height of the stand so my back doesn't hurt. I found out the hard way if the stringer is not at a good height, it can cause major back pain.

2. It is so compact and on wheels, I can roll / carry it anywhere in my house.

3. With the reels of strings on the stand and the tool tray mounted on the stringer, I have everything I need to string a racquet at my fingertips.

The thing that real saves me time is the "brake". It is very hard to use your hip and adjust the dropweight and then set the floating clamps at the same time and having the stringer moving around on you when doing those O3 or IGS type racquetball racquets.

If you can find an adjustable stand with wheels and you can mount the stringer to the stand via bolts, it is definitely worth your time to look into it.

If you still check this thread, what have you done about the stock Gamma X2 clamps? Can you possibly still be using them? Did you cover the bottom part in tape so you don't cut your hand, or anything? Some people have said they returned the machine simply for the clamps alone.. I just got one and this is my major problem, the clamps.

I actually really like the clamps. Doesn't hurt my hand at all. I just really hate that they are bulky... I have trouble stringing my first and last crosses.

Try lubricating the lever. I hear it helps with the opening and closing of the clamps. I don't seem to have trouble opening and closing the clamps... maybe because my clamps aren't tight as others? It still gets the job done though, and no slipping.

In the future, I plan to upgrade to Stringway clamps or Silent Partner clamps. Those are actually made of metal and are easy to work with because of its smaller size. It's a great machine, and I don't think I'd return it just because of the clamps. They can be replaced easily.

I actually really like the Gamma flying clamps and after stringing many many racquets, they are still working great. I haven't even had to clean them yet.

I just do racquetball racquets, with tensions going from 24 lbs to 40 lbs, so maybe that is why they work fine for me. I just set the clamps tight enough to be able to hold the string and no more. The clamps lock and unlock very easily.

The Gamma X-2 was the best thing I have bought and after stringing many of my friends racquets, I have paid for it and the reels of strings I use many time over. It does take me about 45 - 60 minutes per racquet, but I am in no hurry and it actually a nice way for me to relax.

I can only suggest that maybe you have the clamps set to tight and thus they are hard to lock and unlock. The first time I used them, I had them set way to tight and it did cause me to have to use more force in locking and unlocking them then needed.

I wouldn't return my X-2 as it is very simple to use, cost very little and was fun to make modifications on. Granted, the clamps are a bit bulky as Tennisinmyblood stated, but you will get use to them.

I actually make another mod by making my own frame hold down plates. The ones that come with the X-2 have a curve and this prevents me from being able to tension the first cross string correctly, because the Gamma flying clamp is to bulky and hits the holddown plate. The crosses on many racquetball racquets have the first cross fairly close to the frame.

I just took some solid wood, cut out the design so it doesn't have the curves on the ends (make it straight ), drill a hole, and glue a rubber pad on the bottom. It has worked great for me so far and the bulky clamps can now fit without hitting.

I think once you have strung with the X-2 for awhile, you will really like it and will wonder why you didn't start stringing your own racquets sooner.

How did you get the brake to work. I have the xstringer with no brake. I'm doing primarily racquetball racquets also and need that brake.
