My hitting session with Matt

Hey guys, sorry for starting another thread about this but I'm on painkillers and couldn't go through the other threads and respond appropriately. I'm in line at the airport, feeling somewhat drunk, and in a lot of pain (despite the meds).

The experience was awesome, though, and I really learned a lot from hitting with Matt and playing almost an entire set. His game is awesome and he easily puts away any ball that isn't fast and well placed--he puts most of those away as well.

He helped me assess my approximate rating, gave me invaluable tips on my forehand and backhand, and played a set with both my friend and me. I can't thank him enough.

Video is coming as soon as I get back to Brazil. Unfortunately, my 13-year old cousin who filmed it thought he was Scorcese and constantly moved the camera and focused on things other than the action one he court. Hopefully there is enough good footage to be useful. Ill get it uploaded ASAP.

Thanks again, Matt. Next time I'm hiring you for a private. If I learned that much just hitting around with you, I can only imagine how much ill learn by picking your brain for an hour.

I estimated about the 4.0 range from the way he was playing against me. He was playing well, and I mentioned things about closing the racket face at the end of the backswing on the forehand even if you use an eastern grip because you want your ball to have an up and down arc to hit with safer margins. On the backhand, I also recommended modifying the swing path slightly to get a little more topspin because it seemed he was hitting the backhand on too level of a plane. I've had that problem too and my dad would give me crap that I was swinging down on the ball. I recommended finishing that one handed backhand higher up like throwing a frisbee to generate extra spin. Basically, more spin = more safety.

The first line about KISS or the second line about me being the Novak Djokovic of the forum? KISS was about 2 months, Novak Djokovic was about 2 days :P

Landed safely back in Brazil but my bags were stuck in Lima. Hoping to get them in the next day or so, then ill be able to upload the video.

Had an X-ray on my ankle. Pretty bad ligament damage and the flight caused massive swelling--my ankle and toes are black and blue--but I hope to be back on the courts in a month or so.

It would be awesome if we could set up a west coast mini tourney for TT members the next time I'm out there.

Zuffa make it happen (inside joke for mma'ers).

Thanks man! I really enjoyed our hitting, as well! Sorry we didn't get to finish our tiebreaker. It was great meeting you. Hope we meet up again soon.

I think he was going for an amateur cinéma vérité gone wrong shooting style.
or
Perhaps a home-made reality TV "make it look exciting" gone wrong style?

Either way. Well played.

It was my fault. My cousin is only 13 so I should have simply told him to act like a tripod and simply hold one steady, wide angle. I didnt give him any instruction, except where to sit.

I had to stop watching that video after 30 seconds.

Otherwise...

Yeah it was like Blair Witch Tennis at times...lol

The Henry/Matt match was fun...it was interesting how different Henry looked playing against Matt then in the other vids vs the OP.

What most impressed me about Henry was his movement actually. He was able to slide on hard courts and make it look so easy!

Interesting.
It appears TOP speeds of both servers are very similar.
One receiver stands atop the baseline, pretty normal.
The other stands like he's returning Isner's serves. Abnormal.
Matt, it appears you really are a nice guy.
Hate those waiter's tray forehands, not by Matt.
Wow, Henry can slide? Then he should adopt split step and maybe movement.

Those videos are low quality but Andre looks better against Matt then he did against his buddy. I can see now why Matt thinks he is a 4.0..

Matt,

Aside from adding more topspin to my strokes, is there any other feedback you have on my all-around game?

My serves were off because it was a new racquet--much lighter than my usual one (304g unstrung vs 330g unstrung), so they probably weren't much of a threat.

Thanks!

Your videos remind me of the Japanese cartoon with rapidly flashing lights that caused kids to go into seizure. You need to post a warning label like the ones they have at the amusement park rides.

TenFan, sorry about that. My cousin meant well. The other vids on my YouTube channel aren't like that. For those I attached the camera to the fence and left it there to film properly.
