My Lord does Rios Suck!!!

his mental game was far from first-rate but injuries played a big part in him not fulfilling his promise too, pretty sure his back is what took him out of the game.

but man for the millionth time...what feel for the ball. federer, mac, rios are for me the tops in the 'total racket control' department. might not make every shot but their awareness of the racket face, and what they might do with the ball, is/was just next-level stuff.

Unlike most other players who have to step out because of chronic injury debilitating them, the Rios thing was always so nebulous. As late as 2002 or so, there are occasional tournaments where he plays some sensational tennis and seems unbothered by physical constraints. It is all very strange.

yeah, it was weird, who knows what the deal was. i generally prefer the 1hbh players but loved his style. the way he handled a strong agassi in a few of those matches was crazy, such command of the ball. special player.

Mirjana Lucic, Andrea Jager, Mary Pierce, Jennifer Capriati, Arthur Ashe, Pat Rafter, Gabriela Sabatini, Justine Henin, Ivan Ljubicic, Zina Garrison. In those few examples (and that's only the tip of the iceberg) you have; Poverty, war torn countries, racism, abusive parents, other abusive relationships, early death of a parent and a combination of more than one of those things.

Now, tell us again how no pro tennis players have had difficult lives.

Add Tiden (losses mother, father, only brother w/in 24 months as teenager), Williams (Titanic - loses family, doctor wants to cut off both his legs, has to force himself by sheer power of will to prove to these quaks he is going to be able to use his legs; WWI front lines), Borotra (front lines trenches WWI), Cramm (political oppression, imprisonment, Eastern Front front-lines fighting, German Resistance secret agent), Drobny (Occupation by certain "National Socialist Party" foreign power, Communist Oppression, exile), Althea Gibson (white supremacy) Gonzalez (subtler racism), Segura (childhood diseases, rickets, etc., bow-legged, small), Bromwich (nasty WWII service, sickness, wounds) , Yvon Petra (prisoner of war) Art Larsen (returns from WWII psychological invalid) Navratilova (conflicts with Communists, effective defection), Djokovic (brutal war), many others with valiant service in WWII, even Vines (abandoned by father at tender age), Perry (English class bigotry), Johnston and Lacoste (tuberculosis - one survived, one fatal), and on and on
