My Pro Supex Reviews

Hey guys,

After stocking Pro Supex strings for my customers and hitting with them for the last month I thought id share my thoughts. Please remember this is my opinion….:)

Original Synthetic Gut:

This string is a good basic syn gut. I didn’t like it as much as PSGD or some of the other Pro Supex strings. It is crisp, holds tension OK and has a nice feel. Very soft string and great for tennis elbow. I liked this string strung up tighter to add some spin and control. A player I string for (semi-pro) ranks this string second after OG Micro after trying 5+ different syn guts only because Micro gives him better durability.

Synthetic Gut Spiral Flex:

I LOVE this string! Plays like PSGD but much cheaper and IMO more durable. Very crisp, holds tension well, has great spin potential when strung tight and packs a punch from the baseline. I originally planned a switch to Big Ace but found better comfort, feel and better results at net from this string. I break this string every 2 days but I don’t mind as it costs next to nothing and feels great when fresh. Great value!!

Maxim Touch:

For the first hour I really liked this string…imo it does not feel like many of the other multi. This string felt stiff at first when strung at 57/55 but then changed over the next few hours into a mushy mess. The strings move much more than NXT/Biphase and the amount of spin was pathetic! Some of my customers seem to like this string but it find it worse than NXT in every department. A mate of mine who has used NXT for 2 years also felt the same way and was very disappointed with the string. Yes its inexpensive but I really could not play with Maxim Touch!

Big Ace 1.22:

Big Ace is simply an amazing string…the BEST poly ive used. Top of my list for spin, power, tension retention and a surprising amount of feel. Very soft for a poly…I can volley with this stuff! I have been surprised at how long I could play with Big Ace without feeling the need to cut it out. This string is the next big step in softer more comfort orientated poly’s. This string has impressed many of my customers and ive never seen them so interested in a string! (players with ncode’s and other red rackets also love the colour lol). Unbeatable value….

Blue Gear 1.25:

I have only spent 1 hour of court time with this string as its not really the sort of string I use. The amount of spin that can be produced with this string is INSANE…I found much more spin the BB ALU power, Big Ace and many others. The ridges do wear off after a while but then it just performs like a regular poly. This string does feel on the stiff side after using Big Ace and loses a bit more tension. Some of my customers have switched over to Blue Gear from BB ALU power…they love the spin and also the price! The main problem with this string for ME was the complete lack of feel…I felt very detached from the ball when hitting with Blue Gear and found it horrible at net. A baseliner’s string imo.

Synthetic Titan 1.30:

This string is a really nice syn gut. The colour looks good in hybrids and for the price it is a very good quality string. I found Titan to be on the softer end of the scale in the syn gut category. I liked Titan as a full job but think its better for hybrids to soften up the string bed and add some feel. I have some players using Big Ace 17L mains and Titan X's using O3 Tours getting much better durability than usual. I find synthetic Titan to be very easy on the arm (great for tennis elbow), have lots of feel, and think it offers a good amount of spin (especially when strung up tight). Compared to OG Micro and PSGD the Titan feels softer and is not as durable. Imo this string was designed for hybrid applications and excels at that as you can see from many players’ signatures on this board. If you use a poly hybrid and are looking for a good cross Titan is a MUST try!

I plan to hit with Big Ace Micro, Premier Ace and Poly Power Soft over the next 2 weeks and will report back with what I find.

Any comments appreciated…

nice!!

i like the Spiral Flex review! I have been using BA... loking to hybrid... now will try some SF! thanks!

thanks for the feedback/s on all of the nickb!!!
great contribution to the board...

question
1.do you do a fulljob on the spiral flex? - right now I have a reel and just use it as a cross and I have no complaints whatsoever...weird thing is isnt PSGD suppose to be a CRISP string? this is not

2.does blue gear have a dead feel? - I never tried it out but Ive read mixed reviews about it (id rather use smaller gauge to get spin/feel) and can you repeat how many hours of hitting before the ridges wear off???

cheers

Hi,

1) I use a full job of spiral flex...it feels very crisp when strung at 60/63lbs...it is a stiffer syn gut like PSGD (im pretty sure it has kevlar strands in it) which is where the crispness comes from.

2) Blue gear does feel dead when compared to Big Ace and lacks feel. I wouldnt call it dead...just different. The lack of feel can make the string feel dead to some but not others. I have not logged much court time with blue gear but a customer of mine gets around 15 hours before the ridges start to wear off...he is a very hard hitter so other players will get more time.

Excellent reviews Nick!
I agree with your opinion that Maxim Touch gets a bit mushy after a couple hours; I still prefer and using Yonex 850 Pro on my own sticks. However, I've been hybriding Maxim Touch with Spiral Flex/Big Ace for various clients and they seem to like that setup a lot.
Haven't tried Blue Gear but Big Ace has been very well received with many of my clients.
Looking forward to see how you like Big Ace Micro; I've taken quite a liking to this string as a full setup in my K90's.

Good review NICKB.

I've been using Pro Supex strings for about 6 months or so-good strings and a great value.

I agree with your comments. My son will play D-1 tennis next fall and Pro Supex will supply his strings. He uses BA 1.25 on a K6.1 and they give good performance.

I can't say that Big Ace is the best poly on the market but it certainly makes my short list. BTW, I have some new Pro Supex strings that the retailer sent me (free of course):

-A new multifilament
-A red syngut
-A spiral looking syngut that is supposedly similar to Gamma ESP

I haven't tried them or even opened the packages yet.

Nice review. Have you tried Big Ace and Spiral flex as a hybrid. I really thought you loved BA/MT but now you have obviosly found the spiral flex, and your opinion has changed :)

Great reviews!

For MT - I've had different views about it. My friends and I never had a problem with it going mushy. On the contrary, we found that it would not lose tension and stayed firm and stiff.

Hi Pusher,

Good luck to your son...he sounds like a very good player! I am a distributor for Pro Supex so will prob get some of those new strings in soon. Please post here when/if you hit with them I would interested in how they play. Are you using full Big Ace as well?

Nick

Nice review. Have you tried Big Ace and Spiral flex as a hybrid. I really thought you loved BA/MT but now you have obvviosly found the spiral flex your opining have changed :)

I have never used BA/MT touch in a hybrid as I dont really like MT...I have used BG/SF in a hybrid and found it a nice combination...the spiral flex made the hybrid a bit stiffer and spin was excellent.

Your strings should be with you 2moro or saturday...:)

Cheers Jonolau,

Interesting...I have tried different tensions and still dont like it....for me NXT performs much better...prob just one of those things...just goes to show how personal tennis gear is!

Congrats on being a distributor.

Sometimes I use BA, sometimes syngut and sometimes Titan. I've got about a dozen frames that are hand-me-downs from my son that I have strung with different strings. I play them all. But I like the BA best.

Yeah, junior is a pretty good player but he's got a lot of work to do before he actually plays a D-1 match. He won't play with me any more, calls me a pusher, an old man, a washed up player. But he says it with a smile cause I have the cash and he doesn't-plus he likes me a little.

Great review and insight! I too like the spiral flex and the way it feels/hits, but in all honesty the goldish color/silvery color scheme looks awful cheap and cheezy:(--I know that is not a reason to choose or go with a string, but just my opinion and I will stick with the PSGD for my syn gut of choice or even go with the Titan sg--very good string.

I have tried the BA 1.25, Max Touch, Titan, Poly Power Soft and will soon be testing the BA 1.22 vs Cyberpower 1.25. Poly Power Soft was nice feel, but I had no control and it was too powerful for me--mind you it was in a Head Microgel Extreme which is a very powerful stick! I spoke to the distributer of Pro Supex today (Alex) and he had a good discussion regarding the Cyberpower--he said alot of juniors in that area (South Florida) tried the 1.20 CP and have all commented it is too poweful and have switched back to the Big Ace in both 1.22 and 1.25. I am excited to hit with the 1.22 BA in a full setup and if it is even close to my first hit of the full CP 1.25, then I will probably go with the BA 1.22 due to the color selections (love the lime yellow and red).

Both colors of BA are sick! I just restrung my Pure Drives with the red. I wanted to do one yellow one red, but I don't have yellow in the 17g. The PF Hybrid I did not like. My next string will be the spiral flex.

Thanks for the awesome review!

If you want to see pics of my PD's in red, check out the thread that has pics of string jobs.

Cheers,

Tim

I love Spiral Flex on my cross coupled it with Premier Ace (17g) on the Main - producing a clean crisp feel on the ball. No shortage of power, spin and control. So far the spiral flex is holding strong, no movement at all even when I play it against the ball machine.

The hybrid combo is very lively and may not be suitable for someone looking for a more muted feel. I purchased a couple of racquet that came pre-strung with NXT, I had to dumped the string (it felt lifeless); felt bad considering now much the NXT cost but after the make over - Viola! The racquet comes back to life!

Hi Kcraig,

I agree with you on the colour of Spiral Flex...I asked Pro Supex if they did any other colours but it seems amber/silver is the only one they make...guess I will have to live with it :) Kind of reminds me of Prince Lightning XX.

Im sure you will like BA in 1.22...its a special string...spin, power and control are outstanding. Let me know how it hits. Alex from Pro Supex is very helpful and communicates very well with all of his customers....very good for the company and makes things easier for all of us.

Yeah they are pretty cool....red looked awesome in my nsix-one 95s and Pro No1s. Blue Gear looks great in pure drives as well!

Can you compare Premier Ace with Big Ace or SPPP?....I have not hit with it yet. As for spiral flex I agree it makes a great cross and produces a lively crisp stringbed.

Nickb, great reviews!

I'm particularly interested in the Big Ace. Usually I stay away from poly's for their a) stiffness, b) lack of feel, and c) frequent need of restring, although they perform really well from the baseline. Now from your review it looks the Big Ace does exceptionally well in these areas as a poly. My question is how much play time do you get from it before you need a restring? 20hours, 30? thanks.

Hi,

Thanks....I restring after 1 weeks play with Big Ace...I could prob get even longer...for me that is 20-25 hours!

Nick

I played tonight with both 1.25 and the 1.22 BA. I switched back and forth: I still love my 1.25 but the 1.22 takes the cake with the extra feel. I love that string.

I'm a bit wary of the 1.20 CP being too powerful but I might just notch the tension up pound or 2 and see. The storm tour isn't the world's most powerful racquet anyway. Plus, those top juniors can hit it ALOT harder than me. One good thing about going to full poly is not having to straighten out strings any more.

Nick: what's your opinion on Capello? I think he'll get the job done. If he can win the title with all the prima donnas at real, he can certainly sort out Lamps and Gerrard in the same midfield.

where can i buy supex string? dont say prosupex.com because i cant "buy" stuff from their, only can SEE the string supex offers.

I've heard Premier Ace is repackaged SPPP, anyone else heard this?

bs. SPPP is more powerful. Premier Ace is low powered. Don't know who said that but you can tell by the price they are 2 very different strings. If you are talking about Leopard, that is another story.

Can you explain the reasoning behind the difference Big ACE and Blue gear in Lack of Feel department. I noticed the EXACT same thing. I don't get it. Pro supex claim that they are made of same material but Big ace has great feel and Pocketing effect which gives you great control but with Blue gear, it is like hitting with metal wire.

Alex has always been awesome to deal with--alot of great info and super customer friendly! True on the Spiral Flex color--very similar to Lightning XX-I first spiral flex as a cross with Cyberflash---TIGHT!! I can't wait to try the BA 1.22. I know I strung the CP 1.25 @ 52#, but I can't help but think I ought to string the thinner BA 1.22 @ 54# to accomodate for the smaller gauge!?? What do ya'll think??

Kevin, Pusher had a good post on the topic of the correct tension for thinner strings, but i can't seem to find it on here. If we can get him to respond, he seems to really know the issue. The answer is a bit counterintuitive if I remember.

However, I did see a post by Jono and I've reproduced it below...Hopefully he won't mind :) Thanks Jono

Jono says, "IMO, stringing at a higher tension will stretch the string even more and make it slightly thinner. Therefore, I'm guessing that difference between a thick string at low tension and a thin string at higher tension will be even more pronounced.

Feel and comfort will also be very different.

Is the extra spin from a thinner string essientially enough to control the extra power gained?

you asked that question 5 times already. Feel the ridges. Several people already told you why Blue Gear is stiffer. It should be stiffer since the surface is rough plus the weird shape.

Hi PED,

Glad you like 1.22...I find its better than 1.25 at everything but durability (which i dont care about). The extra feel is very pronounced when switching between 1.25 and 1.22.

As for Capello im not convinced....he cant even speak english!...I really think it should be an Englishman but im sure Capello will do a good job. All we can do is wait and see...

Hi Fedace,

I cant really explain it more than I have but the lack of feel comes from Blue Gear being stiffer and having ridges for spin. I dont know about the construction of the strings or how they are made but that could be part of it. I dont think ive used a string with less feel!...but for many baseline players the spin will more than make up for this.

I think J has it right.

To get equal results string thicker string at higher tension, thinner strings at lower tension. But with stringing there are few hard rules-you have to try it for yourself.
