My Pro Supex Reviews

Went out tonight and got a chance to hit with the Blue Gear/Titan hybnd-- This is my first expereince with BG and I was very excited about this combo. I strung up one of Diablo MPs at BG 52#/Titan 55# and picked it up on Friday, so the strings have had 48+hrs to settle a bit. I hit tonight with an 18 yr old hard hitting top junior in SC (played on the 18&under intermidiate national championship team from Cola As I mentioned earlier, I am still very sore and tight from working my chest waaaayyy too hard the other day, so my racquet felt as if it weighed 20lbs!!! We hit for about 25 min and then played a set (he had to leave cause he had exams the next day--hell couldn't he just study in the morning??)--for the record, he beat me 6-4--which I was pretty happy with seeing I was swinging what felt like a freaking sledgehammer! Total time on the court=1 hour.

NOTE: I have been playing with full Cyberpower 1.25 @ 52# so that is what I am comparing the BG/Titan to in the following review/comparison.

LOOKS: I know this does not really matter to most-but DAMN this setup looks AWESOME!!! Bright baby/aqua blue BG crossed with the muted charcoal grey Titan is really sweet and looks nice in the red/black Diablo and I believe would look striking in about any frame out there.

FEEL/COMFORT: This setup was certainly crispier than the CP, but still very comfortable, especially at these tensions (52/55) I actually really enjoyed the crisp feel/sensation at impact. The titan crosses really help out with softening up the BG and also come into play on off-center hits. That is my one of my main beefswith all poly--the pop is great on dead center hits-but it's the off-center misses where it lacks and where a hybrid is really nice (for the record my other prob with all polys is on serves). I liked the way the ball felt in the stringbed and could really feel like the ball was held on the strings for a while and the spin was rippin as I will discuss later. Conclusion: Nice crisp feel, with zero pinging or bad vibrations at all (I do use the black Sampras O dampner for reference).

SPIN/CONTROL: Well this string is good at what it claims-it is a spinning machine and it is SICK:twisted: Eventhough I felt as if I was swinging with a straightjacket on, I was still ripping heavy top balls on both sides and my slice backhand had soooo much bite, both underspin and sidespin--it was killin this young junior--he is only used to facing hard slamming topspin and not used to the wicked spinners us old timers can dish out (for the record I am 33!) I thought my new and improved onehand topspin backhand was $$ with the CP, well the BG/Titan is worthy of 4 $$$$s!! Hit a couple tonight where I literally laughed out cause they were just ridiculous!
The thing I liked alot about this setup is something PED spoke of in his hits of BG, especially his experience with 16g(1.28) BG. My flat ball was HOT and DEEP!(sounds like a porno?) When you know the ball has alot of spin on it, it really frees you up to rip the hell out of it whenever you want to--cause you know it is going to stay in!! I was getting really nice depth on my groundies and I would probably attribute alot of that to the Titan crosses. I don't think a full BG would be good at all and as others have mentioned before, with the gears being vertical on the mains, having the BG on the crosses is kinda of waste IMO--why not stick a $3.00 syn gut like Titan in there and get more out of a string job. Although I could barely lift my arm above my head to put on my hat, much less to serve, I did manage to hit some kickers just to get the points started (about as hard as my 6yr old daughter can hit it I swear). But even with my womanly serve, this baby was spinning and kicking and slicing like crazy.
As mentioned, I only played about an hour tonight, so I can't comment on how long the ridges will last, but as for right now, this is a spinning, yet still very powerful machine.

POWER: The BG/Titan has very controlled power and is about online or maybe a hair less powerful than the full CP setup I have been hitting with. For me the power is all but about perfect. One place I could tell where the syn gut Titan crosses really helped was on the serves, which is where the full CP has been missing and I has really been costing me. I can't wait to serve with this setup once I have some full range of motion back and not be so sore cause I just know I would enjoy serving with this stick!
As mentioned above--due to the heavy/controllable spin on the ball-you really are allowed to swing freely with confidence knowing the ball will drop in, therefore allowing you to hit with all the power you need to.
I did not have a chance to hit many volleys tonight, but the few I hit felt fine, but I am mainly a baseliner, so net performance is not a huge deciding factor for me, but it seems to be adequate in that department.

CONCLUSION: I was very impressed with the BG/Titan and will certainly keep atleast 1 or maybe 2 of my sticks strung with this setup for the foreseeable future and keep the 3rd stick for full CP or who knows what. I think that this is a really good setup for the baseliner/aggressive player who still enjoys playing an all around game with diff type of shots--i.e. topspin, heavy top, flat balls, slice, power, touch, etc...I believe alot of this can be attributed to the BG, but also alot is due to the Titan syn gut, which in my opinion, is a great little syn gut! All in all, the BG/Titan has a great smile factor and is just plain fun to hit with!!! I certainly recommend you give it a go.

Wow great review. Might buy some of jono's new guage of blue gear and hybrid it. Although i do love the Big Ace. If i do not like the Blu gear hybrid (with multi) Big Ace 1.22 yellow all the way :)

Just placed an order for some more Pro Supex strings and got some BA Micro (for my dad), more Titan, and some 17g Blue Gear to compare to the 16g Blue Gear I have now--hybrid with the 16g Titan of course. I also had Alex trade me a pack of my unopened 1.25 CP for a pack of 1.20 CP. I plan trying the 1.20 CP paired with 1.30 Titan crosses. I have realized that I really need the help of the syn gut crosses to help on serving since my shoulders are so weak due to past surgeries, plus it helps out on the off-center shots.

On a side note--I am going to set my Dad (62 3.5 NTRP player) up with a hybrid of BA micro/Pro Supex red syn gut (sample they sent me). He is looking for some more spin (mostly side/underspin for him) and some more pop over his std 16g PSGD @ 58#. He plays with a Wilson NCode N2 (big ole 110sq snowshoe looking stick). He has short swings on both sides so needs some pop and wants a real thin string. So I thought the BA micro at 1.15mm would be perfect paired with a soft syn gut cross. What about tensions??? I was thinking 52/54?? Please advise.

Do you prefer the Blue gear over the Big Ace then?

I am still getting used to the Blue Gear, but after the first little hit (1 hour) it sure is a fun string, but it is too early to make any definative compairsons. i do like the Cyberpower a great deal. I am hitting/playing tonight and will give another evaluation of the BG/Titan (I promise it will not be as long as the first one I wrote.):)

Could you post further comments on blue gear when you have hit more with it please.

I see you guys mostly hybrid with Titan in the crosses; I string BA 1.22 mains and I have a reel of Maxim Touch 17 that I use for crosses. Any reason or advantage for the Titan in the crosses?
Thanks

question on this hybrid

I strung up my MG radical OS
Mains-BA 1.25 @57lbs and Croxx-Spiral Flex@55lbs
hit with it the other night and it was "powerful-explosive (loud)and crisp"
volleys-serve-baseline (1.5 sets of doubles)
overall it was very impressive

Questions
has anyone tried this combo??
is it the S.flex or the BA that is causing this or is it the pairing?
Ive tried BA and Hripc and it had pop also but not this loud (problem was I strung too tight 62lbs (after finding out my Dropweight was stringing 7lbs higher than normal-Ive corrected this...55lbs reference)

I've not played with the maxim but have used other multi's in the crosses like XCel or Wilson Sensation. It's purely personal preference. I find that I get less pop from the titan and the spin is better as well. Also Titan is very inexpensive and is SO soft that it's almost like a multi. Let me know how it goes with the maxim. I've got a pack of it but have not gotten around to using it :)

Played last night again with the BG/Titan hybrid on clay courts. WOW--the spin is really something you need to experience for yourself. Balls seem to hit and jump up and slices are nasssstttyy:twisted: As stated in my first review of this hybrid--I am almost more impressed with the ability to hit hard flat balls with this setup, including my ability hit hard flat angles on both sides. The comfort in this hybrid is nice and feels everybit as soft/comfortable as the full CP 52#, but just a bit crispier. No pinging or vibrations. No arm/elbow/wrist soreness. Volleyed more last night than before and the setup was certainly adequate for my liking.

I do still plan on trying the 17g Blue Gear/Titan just for comparison sake, but I do like the 16g BG @ 1.28mm. I definately plan on having atleast one stick strung with the blue gear for the spin/nasty factor which is definately high and fun:)

Nice post!

Due to the nature of BG, I would advise using a more durable cross such as Spiral Flex on the crosses for a longer life span.

Yeah Blue Gear eats right into cross strings...multis dont last long with Blue Gear.

I would like to know this too.

Anyone want to answer?

I hit with the BA 1.25/Max Touch 1.30 prepackaged hybrid and it was OK for me. First hit was not all that great, but #2 and #3 were better once the strings set in a bit. Good power and feel, but I was a little disappointed in the spin potential compared to Cyberpower and now Blue Gear.

BA/MT vs BA/PSG

MT hybrid did last long. The MT tore up and broke within 5 hours.

PSG hybrid has much better durability and the same feel.

I've also tried a BA full string job but I'm a little worried about be a little too stiff

^^^^BA is a bit more powerful than CP, but CP seems to have a tad more control. I've got one stick strung up with BA/titan at 55/57 and another strung up with CP/titan 55/57 and I could gladly use either one. The feel is different but not dramatically so. The CP I'm using in the hybrid is 1.25; I've still not tried the 1.20 in a hybrid-only as a full poly setup.

Gun to the head, I'll gladly use CP or BA. BA does seem to hit better "out of the box" but CP just needs an hour or two in my book.

I've got a tension question regarding crosses' tension versus mains' tension. I usually go 54 or 55 mains and 56 or 57 on crosses. The reason being I use syn gut crosses which are softer so I string them tighter. When I string full poly, I've always done the same tension for mains and crosses.

However, I was looking on the pro equipment thread tonight and looking at the various tension on the pro's stick. I was surprised that alot of them strung the crosses 2 pounds LESS than the mains. Won't dropping the crosses' tension give me a bit more depth? Nadal for example is 55 mains and 52.9 crosses and I think Robredo was 50 mains and 48 crosses. Just curious in general but any feedback would be welcome.

To many advanced stringers, the goal is to achieve consistent stringbed response and maximize the sweetspot. Simply put, the mains are longer on most frames and thus will need to be strung slightly tighter than the crosses (all else being equal). As you noticed, most pros string the mains 2-3 kg tighter in the mains. Then, add in the factor of different elasticities of strings (and gauges) when doing hybrids and you can see that determining tension is not simple. The advanced stringer will account for all of these factors.

As an example, I strung up my LM Rad MP with Pacific Classic Gut mains and SPPP 1.18mm crosses. Here are the factors going through my mind:

1. Mains are significantly longer than crosses -- M +2
2. Nat Gut is much more elastic than copoly -- M+4
3. The SPPP crosses are much thinner (1.18mm vs 1.30mm) than the NG mains -- M-2

So the tension I chose was 59lbs mains and 55lbs crosses.

Thx rlee, I've always done tension according to the string properties hence I always strung up poly lower than mulit's or syn gut. Your post was excellent on the consistent stringbed comments. It's funny that you mentioned SPPP 1.18, that's what I am putting in my PDR next coupled with Titan SG crosses. I did catch the kilo's bit :) Thanks again

Ive used the gut m's and SPPP xs setup and its very nice...holds tension well and has good durability. I would be using gut mains if I didnt break so many strings.

Nick

What tension would you have done in the Rad if you reversed the gut mains and sppp crosses?

This would be interesting:

1. Mains are longer M+2
2. SPPP Mains less elastic M-4
3. SPPP Mains thinner gauge M+2

In this case, SPPP mains at 57 (midpoint on the LM Rad MP) and NG crosses at 57 or slightly higher (NG is much more elastic than SPPP).

Yep. This setup is very solid and works well in the LM Rad MP -- dense 18 x 20 pattern minimizes string movement keeping control and durability high.

Other factors...

I use the three basic criteria above to choose relative tension. When determining overall tension, I like to look at four more factors:

1. Overall power response -- power (lower tension) vs control
2. OS vs MP -- generally OS strung 4-6 lbs tighter for similar response
3. String pattern density -- 16 x 19 tighter than 18 x 20
4. Overall predicted string elasticity (poly looser than SG looser than Multi looser than NG) "Predicted" when working with hybrids

So in my case, my LM Rad MP is strung with 7 lbs overall tension less than my Prince TT Warrior OS using the same strings.

Sounds complicated, but once you get the logic of it, selecting a tension becomes less hit-or-miss.

Hi nickb,I've read almost 13 pages and found out you like CyberPower and BigAce very much, right?
How do you compare these two wih Sppp Pure(all gauges)?
I'm palying with Sppp Pure Hex 1.25 but I feel some arm pain, don't know really if is the string or tha racquet(I switched from an iPrestige mid to an AG200 16x19).
The softer is CyberPower right?

nickb thanks for the reviews. i'm a high school varsity team tennis player and i'm trying the pro super myself. going to order ba and try it as a full set up and on my other racquet i was planning to hybrid it with either the syn gut titan or sf. which would you think would go best with ba? main or crosses? just wanting some feedback. thanks

Hey,

If you have a dense string pattern racket go for the 1.22 BA...otherwise the 17 is good for more control (but less feel). Big Ace mains and Titan crosses plays great...my customers love it. If you are a big string breaker go with SF in the crosses as its more durable.

Sorry but ive never used SPPP pure...I find SPPP Hex pretty harsh and it also hurt my arm (strange when ALU never has). Sometimes players get arm pain from adjusting their strokes after getting a new racket...it could take a few sessions to get back to normal. Cyber Power is very soft and arm friendly for a poly.... give the 17 a try and see how your arm responds.

Pro Supex Maxim Touch

I have been playing exclusivlely with Ashaway Kevlar Crossfire II, and recently tried out different poly/synthetic combinations.

Today, thanks to sup2dresq, I strung up the Microgel Prestige Mid with Pro Supex Maxim Touch 16 gauge. Two words>>> BLOWN AWAY!!

This string is only 6 bucks, and plays like a natural gut. It not only has the feel and power of natural gut, but also bites into the ball like a poly. Additionally, the string doesn't move.

What I enjoyd the most about the string is it enhances the feel of the frame so much more than anything else I have used.

Nothing comes close to this string. I'm going to buy a reel of this stuff.

I prefer it as a hybrid but it's easily soft enough for a full job. Regarding the hybrid, I would go with BA mains and Titan crosses if you want a softer cross. It's a great setup with a ton of pocketing and control. The SF is a bit "harsher" or firmer depending on which definition you prefer. BA is comfy anyway so you should have no problem with a poly main.

PED, would you think Blue Gear as a full set up is a good idea in a head extreme. Currently have BA/NRG hybrid. I did pick up a set of PSGD in case I wanted to hybird the BG.

Wao, i play with either a pdr or apdc which have a similar stiffness to the extreme. I played with BG as a full job twice last year: loved it the 1st time then didn't love it the 2nd time :) KCRAIG convinced me to try it again as a hybrid and a few weeks back I put it in my apdc as a hybrid with their soft titan syn gut. That setup is $$$.

I love BA and will gladly use it but I think BG is what I prefer now. I will add that I much prefer BG as a hybrid and if you usually hybrid than I would continue to do so with BG. A full job of BG would be fine but I think the spin of BG combined with the punch of a soft cross is great. I've actually never hit with psgd but I would think any soft syn gut or multi like NRG in the crosses would work well.
You can get wicked action on any shot and the ball pocketing is just great. If I sound like I'm gushing, I am. I've only used it in my apdc so far and have not tried it in the pdr but i'll get around to it eventually. I just sent back 3 packs of cyberpower i ordered last week and exchanged them for BG. You'll love it. I've been using the 1.28 but I've got a set of 1.19 BG on the way.

The punch from the almost 12 oz extreme and the spinny nature of the BG should be lethal.

I had a Head MG Extreme and Extreme Pro before switching to the softer flex Tour Diablo MPs--the Extreme was too stiff for me and gave me arm tenderness and I could not handle polys in that frame. BG is not a "soft" poly and I would shy away from the full BG. Also my experience, albeit limited with polys is on center shots, any string is good, but it on off-center hits I just don't get the forgivenss in full poly and therefore the need of the softer cross such as Pro Supex Titan. This is a good setup with BG for several reasons (in order of importance of course):

1. The bright blue BG and grey cross looks wicked in about any frame!!!
2. The gears on BG run vertically so there is no real necessity to use it on the crosses
3. Massive spin coupled with controllable pop is a deadly combination
4. Many have commented that full BG felt dead- but not with the syn gut cross--definately adds some feel and touch, and finally
5. Costs--crossing with a syn gut cuts the costs down to about $6.50 per stick--that is very nice

Those are just some of my reasons I love me some BG--I have always been a hard hitting flat baseliner, now with the BG/Titan I can still kill it flat or play with more top which with this stuff is no easy ball for the opponents to return--sounds like a "win win" to me. :)

Kevin, I like your priorities: looks are number 1! It will be strange tomorrow when I pick up the pdr with the grey on grey of bb alu rough and titan crosses...that will look really dull. :) I'm curious to see how the titan works out with the BB. I've hybrided alu before but only with multis. It's supposed to get warmer next week: the high up here was only 35 today.

That is definately going to be duller than the BG or BA you're used to seeing. Even the CP blue and titan is pretty dull for my taste. I am thinking I need to tinker again with the Big Ace and cross with Titan--but my next string job will be the 1.25 BG/Titan at 52/55. I am hoping the 1.25 has just a bit more pop over the current 1.28 BG I am using now.

Kevin: Which tension do you prefer in your poly mains now: 52 or 54? I went with 54 on my BG mains and it's perfect. I dropped my SPPP mains to 52 on the PST but it's hard to tell there since I don't care for the xcel crosses and the storm is lower power. On the PDR, I went with 53 on the alu rough mains as Nick mentioned that the alu is harsher than BA. My son is loving the PST but I wonder if the reverse hybrid of titan mains and BA crosses might not work well there.

Well since the Tour Diablo is a lower powered frame and more "control" oriented, I like the mains and overall tenisions a little lower--I seem to get better feel in the strings and I seem to get better pocketing--So 52-53# in the mains, especially with the cooler temps right now, works about perfect for me. I will probably bump them 1-2#s once the temps get back to 75*++.

How did your BB/Titan setup come out in the PDR--have you had a chance to hit it yet and how does it compare to your BG/Titan baby?

PT63, I like the SPPP and wish I'd stuck with the titan crosses as I can't really give myself a truly apples to apples comparison with BA,BG or the others. I do like the SPPP and still have a pack and half to go so I'll try a different combo in a few weeks. My son is using the PST with that setup and he really likes it. I noticed that the sppp/xcel works well against a really heavy hitter. When playing points on thursday with a big banger, that was the money setup, but it responded better when I was taking a REALLY big cut at the ball and going for broke. When I used it later that same evening it was not as responsive but the temp had also dropped around 8 degrees so that had alot to do with it.

The sppp gives good spin (thanks minirafa) but my choice of xcel probably drops the overall spin production a bit vs what you would get in a full job of sppp. I like it and want to explore it more. One last variable is that I tend to hit a flatter lower trajectory ball with my PST as compared with my aero so that has to enter into it as well.

Hey guys,

I just strung up some more Pro Supex...have to say all my customers love the looks of Big Ace and Blue Gear (and playability :)). Just strung a guys radical with BA/MT 51/53lbs and a regular customers Pure Drive Cortex with BG @56lbs...the picture does not do the blue justice as it looks amazing in person.

ps...PED..how is the ALU working out?

Nick

Nice pics Nick, You're right-pics don't capture just how BLUE the BG is! I like the sound of that BA/MT setup at 51/53. That should work well in the Rad.

I agree with PED. When the sun is shining on Blue Gear, it looks so bright. The blue color is like a light color but on the other hand it shines.

What gauge did you try? How is the durability?

16 gauge. I just started using it, so not sure about the durablility as of yet. I would guess the durability is between a synthetic and poly. However, the string, after using it about 4 times has not gone dead vs. a poly that uaually goes dead during the second time I hit with it. It has also retained it's original tension better than poly.

I had my 1st hit today with BB Alu rough and titan and it was ......just ok. I know alu rough is used by fed and cost $14.50 a pack but I'd rather play with BA or better yet BG. I used to use alu rough, in fact it was the 1st poly i used around 18 months ago, but I just was not blown away. I'm going to give it some more time and I'm certainly not going to cut it out right away. I guess I should be glad as I'll be saving hundreds likely in stringing cost going forward :)

I can see why people say CF is a cheap sub for alu rough as the feeling to me was very similar and I'm not a fan of CF either, but I do like CP. The power level is much lower than CP, BA and BG. I hit for 45 mins with the alu rough/titan then the last 25 minutes, I switched to my stick with BG/titan. I was getting much more depth and action with the BG and just as important, the "feel" was much better for me with the BG. That's just me though.

Have you tried BG as a full set up? If you use a hybrid what. I would think the BG would saw through a multi? I was thinking PSGD?
