My shoes history - Suggestions?

For me support, comfort and lifespan are important in that order. "Speed" is not.
Can you guys suggest some options based on these?

Shoe history
  • Gel Resolution 8 - Great but a little crushy on width
  • Gel Resolution 9 - Great but a little crushy on width
  • Gel Resolution 9 Clay - Great - no crushyness (bought because it was a deal in pink but loved it)
  • Diadora B.Icon 2 - Worked good enough... wore a little faster than expected but not too bad.
  • K-Swiss Ultrashot Team - Great initally. Too soft and unsupportive soon after. Still the 2 pairs I have on "unserious"/practise days as a trainer and for general purpose day to day use.
  • Adidas Barricade 13 - SUPER but wore out too quickly (2 months) - Cant get guarantee since I bought from Adidas and now TW
Suggestions on new shoes?
  • Gel Resolution X - apparently width issue is fixed?

I have had issues with the Resolution X as a former 2E Gel Res 8 and 9 user but the standard fit is definitely wider and I would say even slightly wide. I would also consider the New Balance CT Rally V2 and Mizuno Wave Enforce Tour for Support and Comfort although I did find the upper to be a bit too soft for my preference

New Barricade 14 is arriving soon. Have you bought your Barricade 13 in a big enough size, because their size/number has shrunk with the 13? If you bend your toes and allow all of your bones to stretch and fill the forefoot space, do your toes have enough space? If not, if it's tight, shoes will wear out much quicker, and it's not good for your feet and whole body really either, that should be the primary motivation to have your tennis shoes half size larger

In the Barricade 13 I did experience toe jamming (when it was new till about half life) when my foot would slip within the shoe which I had to counter by lacing tighter. Second half of its life no issues at all.

My feet are 11.5 but I have always worn 12 Tennis or otherwise.

You need custom insoles with a firm enough and high enough arch. Then your midfoot upper ridge will be stopped by the lower end of the laces, no toe jamming

I've worn them for so many years now, and recently tried with only the stock shoe and insole, was surprised how my foot danced around in the shoe. Immediately went back to my insoles

Tried buying some retail insoles, too soft and arch not high and firm enough, returned them all. Just two weeks ago I returned a pair

My foot is average, slight overpronation/flat foot, not too much

I'm a fan of Diadora shoes because you can get them cheap online. I get the Blushield Fly 4 for $60-$75 depending on the colorway and replace the insert with a Move Game Day Pro (I play singles on hard courts). They usually have hard court and clay versions!

I went with the Wilson Rush Pro 4.5 for $95 from TW
Hopefully this will be the GOLDILOCKS setup

Asics Gel Resolution X $106 from other sources (no 6 month guarantee) and $120 from TW (6 month guarantee) - but the inner ankle shoe design looked weird and I just didnt want to risk it even thought GR8 and GR9 and GR9C have all been gr8!

I accidentally stumbled into Wilson shoes about 3-4 years ago. Had a love hate with Nike for years--you find a shoe that fits and then the next model of the shoe was completely different, plus figuring out size was always an issue with them. TW had some Wilson Rush Pro on sale for $50 so gave them a try, I think version 3 or 3.5. Love them and have stuck with them through each generation. From a fit perspective from generation to generation has usually been seamless.

Between the Pro and the Pro Ace, they are very similar. Pro might be a little faster/stiffer and closer to the ground, whereas Ace a little wider and a little more cushion.
I think you'll be happy but if needing a little more cushion try the Pro Ace next time around.

My previous experience was the Wilson Rush Pro was the 2.5... in July 2020 from walmart dot com for like $30 clearance. The only thing I remember was it was like 1/2 size too big feeling - no negative memories.

Very Happy with the RUSH PRO 2.5 after first 2.5 hr session.

After recent run of average rackets and unnecessary price increases in way too many things (grips, rackets, balls) I had given up on Wilson. Their lifestyle and sports apparel are always way overpriced. I wish they were a more streamlined operation and let the regular guy access their products or atleast have a CORE/Basic LINE of stuff... instead they are just going UP UP and AWAY

At least for shoes I am back with Wilson.

Of all the Wilson Products, I feel their shoes are most competitive in price and frequently on sale compared to Nike/Addidas/Ascics.

how do these compare to barricades? i'm on 13s also and about to send them in for replacement (warranty).

No heel slippage or toe jamming (present in Barricade 13 for me). The Barricades would almost have to be laced too tight to fix that. The sole feels stiffer in hand than Barricade but on actual play it feels pretty soft. Honestly I'm quite excited as it gives me a more comfortable and lighter feeling (may not be real) Gel Resolution 8.

You didn't find any stability issues that they complained about in the Rush Pro thread?

Im a lowly 4.0 in my early 40s... Not the best subject to test such things really. Its stable enough for me. So far it's my favorite of my the shoes that I have liked and used in the past but will know for sure over the next few weeks

I tried doing some research to see what thread you were referring to. I found a couple but didn't see any specifics about stability, if you want to add the link here for me to review to see if anything matches my experience.

In regards to stability, I've never had an issue at all with the Rush Pro. The Pro Aces are a tad bulkier so maybe once in a blue moon I feel I land off balance, but it is rare and not a frequent feature of the shoe.
Shoes do loosen up a little bit after use, but I found that a benefit as it seemed the fit became more personalized to the foot and you can adjust with laces as needed.
I use a Orange Feet Orthotic and it fits well inside.

I'm an old dude, but in my group of buddies my speed and footwork is one of my "envied" attributes. Covering a lot of court in singles, doubles and hitting have not been an issue with change of direction.

Don't "want" to, but will because I like you. The three I found were
made me worry that I could more easily roll an ankle

Good looking shoes

Good looking shoes but when push comes to shove not a great performance shoe, if that’s what you’re looking for. Cushioning and ability to rebound on sharp lateral movements are not great. Feel the sides collapsing on sharp cuts.

I guess I just disagree. Now if that is some fast 4.5 or 5.0 player or better maybe they are doing things on the court that I can't. But I've had no major issues with cuts, sprints and jumps with the shoe

looks like TE wants the barricades back and will issue a store credit instead. I think i like that better, anyway (allows for virtually unlimited recycling of $ paid towards the next shoe with warranty). How are the RP4.5s holding up? I think this may be my next shoe to try.

My first pair of Yonex Eclipsion 5 was purchased a year ago, made it through several seasons of outdoor tennis and pickleball. The shoes are still in operation today. I bought another pair fearing Yonex would stop production.

They look bland. I mean the color schemes are real headscratchers. No idea why yonex insists on making their shoes look so dull. But that doesn't matter if you want support, comfort, and durability.

You should strive to have your rating match your age. Since you are currently early 40s, 4.0 makes sense. Get to 4.5 by 45 and you will remain in compliance.
