My thoughts on the Federer-Djokovic match

First things first, I am a massive Roger Federer fan. This was a very tough loss to swallow, especially after the match points, and I am very disappointed. However, I have to congratulate Novak. This was the most thoroughly deserved win I can recall, not just for the way he fought tonight, but for how long he's waited to come out on the right end of one of these slam matches. Congratulations Mr Djokovic, it couldn't have happened to a more deserving player.

I have to say that Roger played a great match too, and the fact that this was SO close renders these 'Federer is done' threads as trash. He's not what he once was, but I think there's probably a slam or two left with the right draws and conditions. He showed some good heart tonight as well, and while he didn't play his best for large portions of the match, he hung in there in the fifth set. He didn't do enough on the returns of his match points, but he didn't lose those points, Nole won them.

All in all, a surreal semi-final for me. I am very disappointed but also have to smile for Novak. I wish him all the best in the final and hope that he can recover in time.

Peace out, and congratulations once more to Novak, a deserved winner.

losing a slam SF after having match point is hard to swallow :( but that 5th set was such an intense (and physical) thriller... congratulations to both.

and good recovery to novak... he has to win tomorrow, he really has to.

I think Djoko winning this is the summation of all the maturity and heart he's gained this past year.

Remember the Djoko that everyone hated? The whiny mama's (and dada's) boy?

He's a totally different person now than he was then. I can't say the same for his box/parents.

i think this is the worst semi final federer has ever played, seriously 50% first serves and a 2/3 winner to unforced error ratio is garbage. if that is great then his match against Djokovic in Australia 08 must've been a goat performance

Congrats to Joko, great comeback from MP's. Level of tennis picked up in the 5th, good match all around but hardly worthy of a "classic" header.

If Fed's 1st serve % was higher than 45%, and he had a better winner to UE ratio, I think he would've won in straights. No disrespect to Nole, he hung in there, but he will have to play better and hope for rain tomorrow if he's gonna beat Rafa.

thumbs up. A very entertaining match from both sides, Congrats Novak you did it. Best of luck tomorrow

absolutely entertaining...have an IPA and get some well deserved rest Nole. hope you're firing on all cylinders tomorrow cause this one should be good.

I agree with the OP; congrats to Nole, and hope he will play well again in the final. A lot of people have written him off so it is time for him to prove us all wrong

Yeah, it was a great effort by Novak. I didn't think he had it in him. I really wanted to see a Nadal vs Federer final, but kudos to Joker winning. It's hard not to like the guy.

I'm hoping Novak beats Nadal tomorrow. Would love to see the reaction's of the diehard Nadal fans. :D

One thing that stood out for me from Federer's play lately. He's still fast and hits the serve as well as ever. But he goes through these funks which cost him a set or more. He goes walkabout for a little and then he gets his groove back. He never used to do that. Djokovic really made him pay for those short slices. His backhand made it virtually ineffective.

The backhand slice is the backbone of his game. If you can hurt him off his slice, especially the intentional short slice you got him beat. Novak took those short slices and went up the line with them with authority. Nadal can take those slices very well too. Basically if you move great and have a strong ad-court game (i.e. lefty forehand or strong right handed backhand) you have the tools necessary to defeat Federer. But his serve deserted him today and he was passive on the big points, too much hoping for an error. He will need to take initiative on those important points in the future.

Djoko played fantastic the last few games of the match to win it and he showed surprising mental resilience. Fed has been on the downward slope for a while, so nothing new there. After he won Cincy, I predicted he wouldn't win USO. Fed doesn't have the endurance in best of 5 anymore. He's getting too old.

I agree he's getting on, but you really think that Djokovic painted two lines down match point because Fed's too old? That wasn't the reason he lost today, you're just, as ever, looking to kick him when he's down.

Why start a new thread?
