Legend
Nadal’s rollercoaster year has produced some of the weirdest stats for a single year that I can remember in a while:
I have no idea what he is planning to do with the rest of this season, but part of me wants him to keep picking up wins against Ruud and Rublev and co and only bombing out against players outside the top 20 just to keep this ride going
- Nadal has won more matches at slams (22) than he has in all other events put together (16)
- Nadal’s record against the other 2022 slam finalists in 2022 is 6-1
- Nadal’s overall win % vs top 10 players in 2022 is 87.5% (7-1) and his win % vs top 5 players is 100%. These are the best year %s of his entire career
- In his 5 slam matches vs top 8 (i.e. ATP finals-chasing) opponents, Nadal dropped 4 sets, an average of 0.8 sets dropped per match
- In 15 slam matches vs opponents outside the top 8, Nadal dropped 14 sets, an average of 0.93 per match
- 40% of Nadal’s losses this year have come against opponents who were injured before or during their match
- In the race for number 1, Nadal has the lowest points total (adjusted for past differences) of a 2-slam winner at this stage of the season… ever? I can’t find a proper source for this
- Nadal’s 20 match winning streak at the start of the season (the end of which involved a rib fracture) is the 3rd best start to a season in ATP history. The 2nd best was only 2 years ago - Djokovic in 2020, which ended with a DQ
I have no idea what he is planning to do with the rest of this season, but part of me wants him to keep picking up wins against Ruud and Rublev and co and only bombing out against players outside the top 20 just to keep this ride going
