Zeverev and Tsitsipas will be his toughest test

In addition to all these matchup factors, recovery after previous matches is now a crucial issue for him. His stamina must be better, too. Thirdly, Nadal’s tactics/strategy also must be spot on and allow him to win more efficiently —more forays to net, better placement, stronger positioning & yes, even on ROS esp. deuce side imo, judicious use of slice, etc. He can’t get into these 4 hour 3rd or 4th round duels with Khachanov et al. Like, Mike Sams said, that US Open 18 4th Rd. match against Khachanov followed by the epic 5-set TB win over Thiem did him in physically before the semi and that was 3 1/2 years ago.

Rd4/Qf are key since karatsev/hurkacz are untested matchups whereas Zverev is imo the toughest test of the tournament for rafa much more than Medvedev as well

Rooting against Rafa here, hopefully get bounced early.

Now S&V isn’t coming back.

It will certainly help Rafa’s confidence. He might not be the favourite but if he finds his game then we knows he’s a fighter and had the experience to win slams. If Zverev or meddy are slightly off colour then anything is possible. It will be an interesting 2 weeks for sure.

I don't mean it in an anti-Nadal way.

There is surely no disputing that Kokkinakis is in decent nick at the moment, and that Nadal is a little bit rusty.
Kokkinakis has no weapons, he didn’t beat anyone of significance, Cilic had to choke the deciding tie break to gift him the win in the semis.

As a Nadal fan, Kokkinakis is the least of my concerns, even for a rusty Rafa.

People always use this "X has no weapons" line.

But in reality, a tennis match is just that - nothing more, nothing less.

There have been countless times in tennis history when a "weaponless" player has defeated the alleged "weaponed".

His preparation for the French Open begins in Monte Carlo. Not Melbourne.

I think it begins now, only because he is rusty and needs all the play he can get, on any surface. But I doubt he will go deep.

I do wonder, with the Novak controversy, will the crowd en masse be cheering for Nadal to get to 21 at the AO? I have no idea. We'll see how they receive him tonight.

Have you ever seen Kokkinakis play?

It does not feel like it.

BTW in said tiebreak it was Kokkinakis who was up 6-2, not Cilic. Kokk saved the MP with a BH DTL winner...

you're a little confused.

Surely you have enough critical think for something like tennis even if not COVID, that would lead you to realize Kokkinakis has weapons heavier than most in the world.

Oh yeah? Tell me when was the last time Zverev best a top 10 in a slam?

0-11 is a surface-level perception that can only appeal to the simple-minded mouth-breathers.

It has zero relevance and is completely unrepresentative.

The devil is in the details here.

It's akin to those blaming LeBron for his finals record.

It's a misleading statement not rooted in any intellectually honest place.

And the fact that one of the 3 best players who's almost exclusively losing to just Djokovic and Medvedev now is getting slanted while performing to his seeding at just about every slam, is absolutely ridiculous and a sad reflection of our society.

Zverev's 11 top 10 losses were almost all against top 5 players. The few outside top 5 meetings he got, were when he was still a teenager.

He was an underdog in all 11 matches, and performed to the bookies' expectations (won sets) every single time or did better.
