Nadal: “The 25-Second Rule Will Harm the Fans”

The 2012 Australian Open Final was easily the most watched tennis match of 2012. I know people who very rarely watch tennis (and actually dislike tennis) who ended up watching the ENTIRE match. If tennis organizers could be given an exact copy of the 2012 Australian Open final for their event, they would take it. And when that 2012 Australian Open final was over, people wanted to see more. Not less.

It was the most watched because it was at the beginning of the year. After that most of the fans were too exhausted and bored to bother watching another match all year. Or maybe they just killed themselves.

The 2012 Australian Open Final was easily the most narcolepsy-inducing tennis match of 2012. I know masochists who very rarely watch tennis (and actually dislike tennis) who ended up watching the ENTIRE match. If tennis organizers could be given an exact copy of the 2012 Australian Open final for their event, they would consider retirement. And when that 2012 Australian Open final was over, people wanted to kill themselves. Nothing less.

Some slight corrections.

I agree, if there's a ridiculously long rally it should be fine to take a little longer. I think that's what Nadal is getting at.

Those situations aren't what cause the delays anyway. It's the toweling off and long breaks between short points.

agreed by far. Why are sports catered to the spectators and judges, with no concern for the atheletes? The more high performance the machine, the more attention to detail you must give to keep it running.

Likewise, the people that make the rules seldom have concern for the well being, and what it takes to protect the athelete. Look at the 2012 AO, where Nadal and Djokovic were ready to pass out during the trophy ceremony. No one gave consideration to them, as exhausted and spent as they were, they were forced to stand and wait until all the VIP gave their important little speaches. finally somebody realized what they needed and brought them chairs and water.

this is why Rafa is speaking up.

As for the hard court situation, why doesnt somebody invent REALLY good shoes these days? all we get are cute little running shoes that make big bucks for the top manufacturers, but do no good in prevention of injury.

They have the technology to make excellent shoes, but just like the judges and rulemakers, they dont REALLY care about the athelete,.who is just a show-act meal ticket to them.

Yep. Should be common sense to give players room to breathe after a long rally. The rule was actually always there. The problem was umpires not enforcing it, when it was common sense to warn the player.

If Nadal needs more time, maybe he's not such a warrior and so physically strong as he seems to be. Not a single match has been great BECAUSE OF time wasting, only despite.

When Nadal hits a rare ace, unreturnable, or the rally is less than 10 shots, he still takes more than 25 secs to start the next point. Exactly what is he "recovering" from in those cases, pray tell? The "exertion" of towelling off?

While there always should be concern for the athletes, it is the spectators who pay the bills in professional sports. Without them, they cease to exist.

There's a little truth here. I find it so obnoxious when players seriously go to towel off after being aced. They are just blatantly trying to disrupt the tempo of the server.
