Nadal at Roland Garros....

Watching the Zverev highlights (can't wait till they post longer ones), and just thinking, it is WILD that Nadal has only had 3 off-days at the French Open until yesterday. He just lost his 4th match in his LIFE in a BO5 on clay, a week before his 38th birthday. That is absolutely mind-boggling. Even when he didn't play perfect matches he always found a way to win, and it's staggering that we only have 4 videos we can watch of him losing there. Credit to Zverev, Soderling, and Novak, and a gigantic hat tip to Nadal. We were lucky to live in the big 3 era and see the insaneness of what they did in real time. Glad he went down swinging and giving us moments of magic and epicness if this was his last FO.

Greatest ever on a single surface. Most electrifying performer ever seen in tennis. Novak and Soderling truly deserve credit for doing the unthinkable and beating Nadal here. As for Zverev yesterday, it could have been Cerundolo and it might have been the same result. I won't give him any credit for taking down this Nadal.

Nadal played clearly better yesterday than he did in 2015. (when he hit just 3 forehand winners, which was beyond pathetic for any top-100 player)

We both know very well that if Nadal lost to Djokovic yesterday, you would be writing that Djokovic deserves full credit for that.

Certainly an amazing career. I will miss him a lot when he retires, same as I miss Roger. Djokovic is not too far from retirement either so I am savouring every moment..

Zverev needs to win the title really otherwise his career is starting to look a major disappointment. I do like the guy, but beating even this version of Rafa means absolutely nothing unless he gets the trophy, which might sound harsh but time is not on his side at all.
Yes, i think Cerundulo or Musetti for instance or a Baez would have beat Rafa yesterday as i did note he struggled in longer rallies, its going to take him a few months to be able to be competitive in best of 5 set matches.
Id love Zverev to win the whole thing......he wont though.

Nadal wasn't losing to Musetti or Baez. Musetti with his one-handed backhand and lack of quality could never beat any version of Nadal at the Phillippe Chatrier.

The champion is gonna be either Zverev, Alcaraz or Sinner.

At this point, even Tsitsipas may have an outside chance.

A few signs of his former greatness yesterday, but too few and far between. For me, Nadal:
  • is the GOAT of clay - his resume at not only RG, but at every other clay venue except perhaps Madrid, will never be matched
  • had the greatest inside out forehand in the history of tennis - so sad to watch him try to hit it and see how much sting it had lost yesterday against Zverev - but that's not the one I'll remember
  • endlessly frustrated Federer, not just by hitting to the backhand, but by "running around like a rabbit" (pretty sure that's a Fed quote) and making Fed hit about five winners to win each point, which I'm convinced was really the key to his H2H with Fed. No one else did that to Fed in his prime.
  • was a clay courter who, because of the greatness of his game, was able to win slams at every other tournament
  • generated that feeling of inevitability whenever he was playing well, no matter the surface
I don't know what he'll do from this point on, but it has been a great ride to this point. Lots to appreciate about Nadal.

Zverev ain't winning ANY slam with his mindset...
Beating Rafa yesterday is no indicator of how strong he is. The other 3 you mention are more of the favorites...

It’s not disappointing with so much prize money and so many big titles

Claydal is the absolute GOAT tennis history accomplishment, and a global sports legend among the annals of sports achievements. That really is the only take-away at this point for me. In any metric of the game, he is unrivaled.

You should remove Zverev from the list. There are plenty of players who could've achieved the same thing. In 2024, how many clay matches has he played, and how many has he lost?

Yeah sadly yesterday as well as Nadal looked and has improved, i think the likes of Musetti Baez etc would have beat him.
Zverev i still think is vulnerable next round

From 1 to 10, how do you rate the level shown by Nadal in his four defeats there.
:)

Wouldn’t surprise me. I’ve read many times on here that the Alcaraz semi final last year was a great win despite the final two sets finishing 6-1, 6-1.

So, going by the statistics above:

Nadal has played 116 matches at the French Open
Nadal has won 87 matches in 3 sets
Nadal has won 3 matches after his opponent retired in the second or third set
Nadal has won 19 matches in 4 sets
Nadal has won 3 matches in 5 sets
Nadal has lost 2 matches in 4 sets
Nadal has lost 2 matches in 3 sets
Interesting how many times he played Hewitt there. Alost every year up to 2010.
Also he beat Soderling 3 times there which i didnt realise .
Looking at the above nobody really has ever got close to him, Zverev perhaps the most competitive actually looking at it. Djokovic got two wins but he has been severely beatdown so many times for it to be a rivalry at RG really.
How Zverev does this year i think will be fascinating. I am always a bit dismissive of him, but just been looking at his career stats, it does seem clay may be his best surface!

I usually forget about the Soderling 2011 match too. He really did go on a tear in Paris those 3 years. In a way he deserved a FO more than I would say Thiem does

I disagree. I was never and still am not a Zverev fan, however, his combination great fast serving, and powerful and accurate ground game are what beat Rafa. I seriously doubt that Cerundolo or any other player of his caliber could have defeated Rafa.
