It was difficult for Nadal to play against Federer just because he is the best player in history, or because it was a great pleasure?

Rafa staying classy as usual. Yeah, yeah, I know he said this right after he beat him in straight sets at RG this year but I think he’s being genuine here.

Will he stop to say that after he breaks his slam record, or not?

Stop to do something new e.g. He stopped to admire the view
Stop doing something in progress e.g. He stopped smoking

See also try, remember, forget, mean, go on.

Start carries the meaning of new so it can start to rain or start raining prettifying much interchangeably

Nadal might stop to say he is the greatest after he breaks the record

No charge...

Wut?
(For the record, I am sober, so in normal circumstances I should understand, but I can't)

You said Nadal is going to stop saying he is the best and is going to start saying Federer is the best after Nadal breaks the record

I guess that is not what you meant...

I asked if Nadal will stop to say that Federer is the best, after Nadal breaks Fed's slam record. This is what I asked, and what I meant to ask.

For all this people in this thread who did not get the point, this is just a light hearted leg pulling.

Someone pulled the leg of Federer fans in other thread in a similar manner.

I have no horse in this GOAT race.

I am not a fan of any of the big 3. My favorite used to be Andy.

If we’re completely honest, Nadal is in no position to be evaluating the sport’s greatest. :sneaky::whistle:

Stop to say is the opposite of stop saying

Stop to do something means stop whatever you were doing to do something new
The new thing being .... say Federer is the greatest

Sometimes the use of infinitive and gerund is subtle

I like to do = I prefer
I like doing = I enjoy

Try to do = attempt
Try doing = experience

Mean to do = intend
Means doing = involves

Anyway, stop doing = cease

So you meant Nadal will stop saying Federer is the greatest

Anyway, it is nearly tomorrow so I will stop writing about basic grammar and stop to do something more interesting

Dear Prince, I find "Stop to say is the opposite of stop saying" counter-intuitive, but thanks for the English grammar lesson, which I will not stop to treasure, or treasuring.

He is the best until now.
This why the GOAT things it can't be taken seriously.
Only religious fans fervently believe in that.

It is not really a question of grammar, if you are interested.

Incidentally the title of Prince has the style of His Royal Highness, when anointed, otherwise Your Grace is appropriate. You would be never address one as Dear Prince.

The war is over.

But yeah, I've heard Rafa say this for years. He sometimes slips in a probably before he says it but I've heard him say it many times.

OK, thanks for the helpful explanation. Actually, I preferred to call you Dear Prince, instead of Dear Moron.

Good idea for Rafa to say this, because Federer is Rafa's rival, and we know Rafa isn't allowed to call himself the best ever....
So by saying Federer is the best player ever, he's making himself the best player ever :)

Will he stop to say that after he breaks his slam record, or not?
I remember the first time I heard him say it was Roland Garros 2006 when Federer had about half the slams that Sampras had, so I don't know that numbers figure into it.

I will be very grateful if Rafa continues saying this after breaking the slam record. It would show how small his ego is as well.

The GOAT debate is completely meaningless. It is like boxing in which most fighters are susceptible to certain styles of opponent and in tennis you have the added complication of surfaces and conditions.

There is no such thing as the best tennis player, who would beat every opponent on every surface. That is even before you factor in the impossibility of comparing players from different eras.
