Nadal certain to become number 1

Nadal had a free hit at wimbledon his loss irrelevant as it enhanced his position as the best player across all surfaces. With Murray out Nadal will be no1 very soon which reflects his dominance on all surfaces... This is bitter for federer fans...like acid in the mouth lol

Great. Who cares if you get knocked out of slams with three rounds to go, as long as you do consistently well all year, and get that number 1 spot.

When you've won a slam, and had a great year, and will get your 4th YE#1 and haters are in the thread to do damage control on how much it means, I say you're doing excellent.
I'm not a hater. I'm a Rafa fan. I'm very happy he's back, and over the moon that he's having such a great year, but saying Wimbledon is a free hit, and his loss there is irrelevant because he's going to be world number 1 (as if such a thing can ever be a given) is a pretty pathetic way of looking at the situation. It's less about haters doing damage control, and more about crazy fanboys settling for less.

Wimbledon was never something a legit Nadal fan should have had in their plans. Second week, gained points, etc. Disappointment? Sure. But let's see how the rest of the year goes, lots left.

It would be an amazing accomplishment after a dreary 2015/2016.

I don't think it's the bag though. If Federer wins Wimbledon he's 870 or so points behind in the race...with summer HC and indoor season coming up. I'd give Federer the label of 'favourite' to do it if he pulls through at Wimby. Will have to see how things play out.

It's not a really desirable situation for Nadal.

Usually the period from July was when he took it easy to give his body a rest. But this year is different because he has very good chance to become no1 so he has to play more tournaments to make it happen. Overplaying could damage his body and make 2018 a hard year. Let's remember 2008, 2010, 2013. He is 31 so he doesn't has much time to waste.

Secondly he has a good chance to reach no1 for a short time but has almost no chance to keep it an extended time because Federer is playing really well and second part of season is his stronghold while it's Nadal's relative weakness. It gives him little satisfaction but may cost him big.

So, not really desirable situation for Nadal me thinks.

If Fed wins Wimbledon he's favourite for YE#1.

Yes. After Wimbledon, Federer has no ranking points to defend for the rest of the year. Murray has loads to defend in the post-US Open period, and even Djokovic has to defend a Canadian Open title, a US Open final and a WTF final despite his drop in form in the second half of 2016.

With Novak and Murray looking like they might take a few months off it gives Federer a even bigger chance on the hard court season. Federer favourite for the US Open?

Or Nadal perhaps. We'll have to see how they play on the hardcourts.

Yeah and the race too. 800 or so points behind Rafa with a Wimbledon win. Who would you favour to gain the most post Wimbledon? Providing he stays healthy, Roger has always outdone Rafa during this period.

I don't think Fed cares about his ranking much, other than the seeding advantages it gives him. As long as he's top 4 he's in good shape with seedings.

We may see Fed take time off again after the US Open and not play until the Masters at year end.

And if Fed wins Wimbledon and Nadal does NOT win the US Open, I think you have to give Fed the player of the year label. Really, rankings aside, who looks like the best player in the game right now? I think it's Roger followed by Rafa.

Well Nadal A/3R/4R the last 3 years. Most likely the courts will be too fast for him unless he plays near the top of his game.

My gut feeling is that Nadal will do better in the summer, and Federer will do better later in the year. But who knows?

Are you seriously judging Nadal on the last few years? I'm looking at the Nadal that dominated on clay, and looked bloody good on grass until the Muller match.

Federer can't do any better after Wimbledon. He swept everything he played this year(assuming if he wins Wimbledon) except the clay season. The best he can do is to match the same level and result.

Nope, it's bitter for the Nadal fans, since he's got less than half the weeks at #1 as Roger and will never, ever get close to 302 weeks at #1. And guess what? Come Sunday, you guys will be in deep hibernation.

I meant that my gut feeling is that Nadal will get better results than Federer in the summer, and Federer will get better results than Nadal later in the year.

By the way, Federer hasn't won Wimbledon yet. Berdych has beaten him at Wimbledon before, just like Berdych had beaten Djokovic at Wimbledon before.

Wouldn't you say that if (big if I know) Fed wins Wimbledon that he's the slight favourite for YE#1? He and Nadal would be close in the race and Fed often makes a lot of hay in the 2nd half of the year.

It's the same old tired story on grass for Nadal. Yes he's in better form, he reached the final of the AO. But sooner or later he'll come down with a bad injury or another journeyman player will knock him out of a major again and again. We can only judge it on his past record and I don't feel confident in him at the US Open at all.

I mean Nadal will probably Number #1 for a couple of weeks.

He can have those weeks kudos to him but I am willing to bet that once Federer becomes #1 again, he will maintain it until the rest of the year.

I think Federer will do better than Nadal at the US Open series, and better during the indoor season.

Of course Roger hasn't won Wimbledon, but if he does, it's hard to imagine if he wins everything in site to the end of the year.

Will have to wait and see Federer's schedule. Should he win Wimbledon he may feel, is it worth playing both Canada and Cincy? He'd probably be better off going for an 8th Cincy then 6th USO.

Tbh, outside of the WTF, I don't expect Fed to do better than Nadal for the rest of the year at his age, but if anyone can it's him. Certainly not a lock for Rafa.

Brilliant GIF. Plus . . . I thought all of the Nadal trolls would already be in hibernation after yet ANOTHER Wimbledon exit. But then I forgot they had to stick around the edges to gloat over Muller getting beaten. And still be within striking distance, hoping and praying that Fed doesn't win the title. So sad. :)

He did give himself another long break though so he should be fairly fresh and motivated for the rest of the year. Nadal's loss at Wimbledon was unfortunate but I hardly think it means anything for the rest of the season. He already showed very good HC form earlier in the year and his form has improved since. Pretty sure both can rock it till the end.. and Murrovic aren't healthy either.

Rafa has turned into what he was in 2004-2005, a clay court beast and nothing more. But then again, clay is a second rate surface :)

Rafa's season is done. We have seen this movie quite a few times.

Looking at historical trends with Nadal, it's possibly he'll flunk the second half of the year, but there's no hint of physical issues with him. With Federer, he looks refreshed and strong so I'm not sure how relevant his age is to the equation. I imagine that both have enough in the tank to have a successful second half of the year. Obviously, age and grind does become a factor when projecting this stuff into the very far future, as I doubt either will be peaking like this for years on end like they used to.

Where's 60s weed when you need him? Was he banned? Seriously these young guys need to step it up. I keep hearing about the Zverevs, the thiems of the world. These guys can't breakthrough and beat the top dogs in the big stage!

Yep, I agree. Fed took two breaks (after Wimbledon 2016 and he skipped the whole clay season this year) in order to be fresh for the start of 2017 and then for Wimbledon 2017. If he wins Wimbledon, I expect him to skip several tournaments during the US summer/Indoors season to save his body. The guy is 36, so it is reasonable to assume that Nadal is the favorite to end this season as world's no. 1.
Of course, there is a chance that Fed simply continues to play on a high level until the end of the year, but that's unlikely.

But dude you've said multiple times that you wanted Nadal to win W:confused: So it's a bit strange to me that lots of fans are now saying that there wasn't ever a chance anyway.

Other than that I fully agree, he's having an amazing season. Will almost surely be #1 with a good chance to end the season there as well.

He better play every m1000 in sight, at the very least. He skipped 3 months saving himself for the second half of the season.
