"Rafa is confirmed he is travelling to Melbourne and playing in the Australian Open," Nadal's manager Benito Pérez-Barbadillo told The Age.

Federer, meantime, hasn't played since he was beaten by Novak Djokovic at Melbourne Park in January due to a knee injury.

"I would have hoped that I would be 100 per cent in October but I am still not today. It will be tight for the Australian Open," Federer reportedly said at the Switzerland Sports Awards.

"I would love to be in Australia. But it will be very tight with my knee. I don't want to take the next step until I'm ready. These three weeks might help a bit. The summer with Wimbledon, the Olympics and the US Open is my priority," Federer said.

AO is still 9 weeks away and Fed need only the next 3 to be ready, he'll be there.

Wimbledon, Tokyo, Cincy and USO, these the tournaments where Fed needs to peak for. He has plenty of time until then.

Seems to me you've misunderstood his comments. I believe he means that the three extra weeks with the delay of the tournament could help him, not that he needs just 3 more weeks to be ready.

Just a little correction to the article: Benito Pérez-Barbadillo is Rafa's PR manager, i.e. Rafa's employee, not his boss. :)

Sorry, your interpretation is wrong. There's almost no chance for Federer will play in AO and he's dropped ample hints yesterday. You're not quoting him correctly or completely, the entire quote is in the original thread on this topic.

What you are suggesting makes my interpretation of the "three weeks" portion of his comments 100% correct - that the three extra weeks may buy him necessary time, not that he simply needs three more weeks.

Good news about Nadal... :giggle:

Bad news about Federer for all of us... Tennis without him is like flower without butterfly... sky without Sun... bird without wings... life without purpose... :(

I didn’t know Nadal’s manager’s name.

That Fed knee injury will have its first birthday soon. Amazing.

It's going to be tough for Federer.
He had surgery on his knee twice in 2020.
If he's not careful pacing himself coming back to competition, he might need a 3rd one.
