Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have been nominated for the sporting moment of the year award
The tennis greats came together after years of rivalry to represent Europe in the Laver Cup for the first time.

And they guided the side to victory over Team World as they beat US pairing Jack Sock and Sam Querrey.

And Laureus have put it up as a nomination for their big award.

"The tennis world was in awe when its two greatest rivals united," Laureus claimed in the video to announce their nomination.

"Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal joined forces to play doubles for Europe in the Laver Cup.

"The fiercest rivalry in the history of the game was put to one side for two thrilling hours. Players and fans around the world celebrated the rare moment in the history of the sport."

Fans are eagerly waiting to see if they will team up again in 2018 when the Laver Cup heads to Chicago.

The duo are back on top of the world with Nadal ending the year as world No 1 and Federer as No 2.

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal helped Team Europe win the Laver Cup
They won all four Grand Slams between them with Federer taking the Australian Open and Wimbledon and Nadal winning the French and US.

Neither men were able to maintain their form in the final event of the year however at the ATP Finals in London.

Nadal could only manage one match before withdrawing through injury while Federer was beaten by David Goffin in the the knockouts.

But both are expected to challenge for the Australian Open at the start of next year.

The most idiotic award ever! Hoad and Rosewall played doubles together, many times. They also played doubles with Gonzalez and Laver. Just another excuse to give Roger ANOTHER award. IMO, what this does is demean the other players.
There has never been such an electric rivalry as Fedal.

The award will be going to both Nadal and Federer. IMO, always getting butthurt at thought of Federer doing or getting anything when it’s deserved is demeaning to Federer.

On the other hand, Laureus awards started in 2000. How many times have Hoad, Rosewall, Gonzales (note it's an "s", not a "z") and Laver played doubles since then?

As to whether this nomination is "deserved" or not, to each his own, I suppose.

NO player deserves to win an award for playing doubles, with ANY player. My point is that top players in the past often played doubles together.

Gotta admit that no one ever thought they would see Nadal jumping into Federer's arms or vice versa. The bromance will take a break soon enough in Melbourne.

I agree. This is just a Nike commercial packaged cleverly.

That award loves tennis players. They even gave it to Djokovic in 2014 when he had at best an ordinary #1 year, something very far from a historic year, which seemed comical. They gave it to Capriati in 2001 in a year she won a grand 3 tournaments, and didnt even make the Wimbledon or U.S Open final. :D Any chance they have to give it to a tennis player, it seems they do. It would be hilarious if Federer won it in a year he wasnt even #1 ranked or Player of the year in tennis, and would emphasize again how tennis centric that award seems to be.

Capriati seemed to be very popular with tennis award givers. Why is that?

The second season of the Laver Cup will be titled:

The Laver Cup: Will the third wheel play?

Evidently no room for 3rd wheels. It's the Rogi-Rafa Show with a few supporting cast. That's why they are giving this award only to those 2 with no mention of the other players who made up Team Europe!

Her story. She swept every single award even though she was neither the computer #1 (Davenport, albeit I dont think Davenport deserved it, but she did win over twice the titles with 7 to Capriati's 3) or the person most real tennis experts/fans thought was the best and had the best year- Venus, who also won 2 slams, 6 tournaments to Jen's 3, and owned Jen 3-0 in head to head that year. She had one of the most dramatic comeback stories in tennis history though, and has always been an insanely overhyped, popular, and overrated player, so in a year she did something so unexpected, dramatic, and great, she was always going to be overrewarded I guess.

If Rafa says it's not an exho then it's not an exho.

I saved the thread, because this is yet another historic moment for the vamosalaplayans.

Let's face it.

Your comment here is of the same magnitude as the famous NSK statement that the olympic gold is worth 6 WTF titles, but only because Nadal has it.

It is the life philosophy of the members of the VB in a nutshell.

Oh, and I was about to say that it would have been important, if Nadal won it and another useless acknowledgement if Federer won it, but that was before I opened the thread.

Didn't see it coming with both being nominated together, so I have got to give it to the marketing machine that they are doing whatever they can to push a brand that includes both Federer and Nadal.
