It's not rare to see someone outhit Nadal on a hard court, but it's not often to see someone physically outplay Nadal.
Ferrer outhit and outran Nadal.
A nice performance by him except for getting too tight in some crucial occasions.

Tough loss for Nadal. He had a great draw...

nadal is one dimensional and will always be and he wont get an easier draw like this year to get to the final and he blew it thats pathetic but not unexpected to be honest

Yes, excellent effort from Ferrer, but this would not have happened had Nadal not blown his knees playing so many hardcourts this year. Still, as long as Djokovic can pawn fed the way he did in Montreal, it doesn't matter, as long as image of tennis can be restored in the U.S. and elsewhere.

Let's see, Nadal has NO SERVE relatively speaking... Fed has one of the best serves in the game. Let's just end it at that... Even THIS Ferrer cannot win against Fed. I mean why do some of you guys keep underestimating Federer?? I mean, duh...someone plays nice, and suddenly he can beat Federer? NEWS FLASH guys---- even a not in-form FED can beat virtually everyone, and an in-form FED (which he is right now...have you watched him play against Lopez who was Ferrer+Big service? Utterly destroyed him from the 3rd set onwards, and held his own during the 2 sets Lopez was "godlike"...then Fed showed what "godlike" REALLY was haha)... Such Heresy these forums contain.

Rant over :)

But there's still a far leap from that to saying he can beat Federer.
Not if he keeps playing as well as he did tonight. He probably won't, but if he is able to, there's a high probability. Even Federer's absolute best isn't leaps and bounds over the game Ferrer played against Nadal tonight.

Lopez was far from godlike. He had a good serve and that was it. He couldn't keep a groundstroke going without making an error and got lucky with a break in the first and second set. Ferrer had a solid game tonight with no weaknesses.

i think federers best is leaps and bounds over nadal let alone ferrer as fed would slice and dice his way 2 beating ferrer, nadal just hits loopy shots that ferrer can have a go at. federer wont let that happen

Hahaha that's the funniest post in a while. Lopez is a hacker who doesn't have a backhand, and could've owned fed easily if he had stayed composed. Any solid player like Djokovic or Nadal with a decent pair of knees would show him his place in no time.

Oh yes, politrix, Federer's absolute best IS LEAPS AND BOUNDS over this Ferrer... starting from service (Ferrer has NO service) to his shotmaking. Do you even WATCH tennis or Federer matches?

we will wake you up soon from your dream but we will let you enjoy your lovely dream

politrex,

If you totally ignore Federer's superior shotmaking from any part of the court, and greatly superior serve. 35 straight points on serve against Lopez. Ferrer wouldn't be able to make as much of a dent in Federer's serve as he did in Nadal's.

Politrix, stop being a BANDWAGON person...Ferrrer does good, and people like you just hop in his bandwagon. Pathetic really.

And soBad..stop being a troll.

People constantly underestimate Federerl, with no reason. He was underestimated at the AO this year, when he started out with all those "tough" 3-setters.

He was underestimated at the beginning of the clay-court season with his poor MC finals performance, and defeat in Rome by Volandri. "Oh, no way Federer will make the FO final!" But he did.

And he was also underestimated I think by some even at Wimbledon.

I think he's playing his best tennis of the year right now, outside of possibly the AO.

I realize that Nadal was injured and I'll take that partially into account for him losing, but mainly he lost because hard courts have always been his weakest surface and it really shows. Nadal will have to do some major improving if he hopes to go further during the summer hard court season than he has been the past couple of years, or he'll never have a prayer of catching up to Federer.

Rafa should also learn how to take a bit of time off throughout the year to let his body rest and heal. First off his playing style is VERY taxing on his body, and if he is also overtraining as well as overplaying, which I think he is, he is definitely going to run into MAJOR injury trouble in the not so distant future which we are already slowly starting to see happen.

Lopez's serve died half way through the 2nd set. His 1st serve percentage was below 50% and his 2nd serve lost all it's kick. He couldn't go the distance at all that match. It's not a good comparison.

Err I misquoted my previous post. But anyway, regarding Federer's 35 straight service points, yes a lot of that was due to Federer's excellenet serve. But Lopez's game was crap and incomplete in comparison to Ferrer's tonight. Like I said, he had nothing going for him except for his serve and by that point in the match he had no energy. His return was mediocre to begin with, by that time is was completely gone. Federer wouldn't of gotten that many straight service points in many other situations. I'd like to see him do that on a better opponent.

Very sad to see Nadal Injured ,but Credit to Ferrer for outhitting Nadal and making him run all over ,and also staying with him toe to toe in most of the baseline rallies without many shanks ,thats Guts and Determination right there (some just dont have it).

Anyway Ferrer should make the semifinals this year with such an incredible run but unfortunately for him thats where his run ends :-)

If Ferrer plays like this he could beat anybody. Ferrer is a great player no doubt and I'd like to see him win another round (though I like Chela also) or make the final, but he's No. 15 for a simple reason. He doesn't play at this level as much as the top guys.

That said, he was superb and he earned a fan tonight.

djokovic fan im guessing?

Yeah, I think credit is definitely due to Ferrer for staying composed and not getting mental about beating up on injured friend who is better when he is healthy. And I am sure Nadal would respect his friend's professional approach to the situation too.

Lopez isn't Ferrer+Big Service. Ferrer's backhand is about 20 times better and more consistent and he moves better. Just pointing that out, not saying he'd beat Fed.

There's really no bandwagon for Ferrer other than the fact that we are all very appreciative of his effort and level of play tonight.

No one's seriously saying that under normal circumstances he is a serious threat to Fed.

Geesh, give a guy his moment, he earned it.

vamos Ferrer. The Spanish armada is going strong. :D Looking forward to his battle with Joker.

Don't overlook Chela. I think Ferrer will win, but Chela is a veteran who has beaten Ferrer and generally knows what he's doing. Also, Ferrer may have a let down. But, both are probably pretty tired.

Ferrer in 4.

"I don't want to speak about my body right now. It's an excuse. I don't want any excuse. He played well and he beat me," Nadal said.

"For me it's not a surprise. Sure it's disappointing for me but that's tennis.

Not really, a real Federer fan like myself wants a Nadal/Federer final.

So any real Federer fan would automaticaly want a Federer/Nadal final, or else they would not qualify as a real fan. What hogwash. Most real tennis fans would like to see a different final matchup then Federer/Nadal yet again anyway. A new face like Djokovic in the final is better for the game.

Especially since Djokovic is clearly the 2nd best fast court player in the world right now. The press might like the buzz of a Fed/Nadal final - but the true fans know Djokovic poses the best test.

Rafa's serve is still a major liability on fast courts - doesn't win enough cheap points. Needs to flatten it out and take more chances. As he found out last night, he's not the only guy who can grind from the baseline.

All hail, David! Great job!

nice surprise...... good job, david ! :D

Bravo David!!!

It's funny how some "Federer fans" try to appear "classy" or whatever you want to call it by urging a Nadal/Federer final. I personally don't want Nadal to make the final (my personal grudge) so obviously I'm just a normal Federer fan as opposed to a real one.

I woke up this morning expecting to find out Nadal won the night match in 3 easy sets but no he didn't and I am surprised.

Went to bed after the third set tiebreak. Ferrer deserved to win with all those pounding forehands that landed on the line ;)

[
Ferrer will not win the USO so he'll let his fellow countryman Nadal through without much resistence.

You obviously have not seen any of Ferrer's matches lately.
The guy is playing the best tennis of his life.
Last night, I was not surprised he won, but I was surprised at how he did it: he dominated Nadal from the backcourt. He was on the offense most of the time and pounding those groundies with intense angles. Nadal was just flat beat by Ferrer. Ferrer wore Nadal out and made him pay for the way he beats up his body. By the end of the match, Nadal's hand, thighs, knees AND ego wore sore!

An increadible match by Ferrer! Great to see him step up and going for it all. It was a great match up for Ferrer, as Nadal's loopy shots gave Ferrer time to dictate. Having watching his match against Nalbandian, I think Ferrer may have some trouble against very talently ball strikers (like Federer or Davydenko) that can take the ball early.

Well for heavens sake. I have just seen the match at last as there was no coverage here yesterday/today and that was no match surely. I mean Nadal just went through the business of returning shots and putting on a show. He hardly went for any shot outside what was comfortable to him and obviously losing did not mean that much to him. Well done to Ferrer though and if he plays like that will get past Chela - but I doubt the finals

As a Federer fan I want #2 player to keep losing as early as possible so that Federer is guaranteed #1 spot every year until he has at least six #1 year-end finishes. So good job David!

Last thing I want is to see a tight race for #1 which can end up in Federer pushing himself too hard at the end of the year and then getting injured or burning out like Sampras did in 1998. Who cares about H2H with Nadal. Being well rested an injury free is more important at this point in Fed's career.

HAAAAAAAAAA! Oops.
Were you inferring that Ferrer would let his compatriot through?

yeah, I thought Ferrer would put country before self and act in the best interests of Spain as Nadal has more chance of beating Federer than Ferrer.
