Nadal has not been eliminated before QFs in the last 20 knockout tourneys he participated

Excluding 2019 and 2020 WTFs which weren't a straight knockout tournament from the beginning, I think Rafa has reached at least QFs of the last 20 tournaments he entered. The last guy who beat him before Qfs was Nick K I suppose!! Correct me if I am wrong(y)

his top level has obviously declined, but somehow he's been more consistent than ever in his 30s. He also set his longest major SF streak in 2019 iirc.
Heck, out of nowhere, the guy had his most consistent slam season at 33 since he'd never been to 3 slam finals and a SF before.

Nadal's 2019 in a nutshell illustrated the difference between consistency and top level.

Losing more = more rest

I remember the halcyon days where I prayed for him to get ousted of mickey mouse tournaments so he wouldn't overplay. Rotterdam 2009 being the worst case, but also some crazy clay seasons with barcelona + the 3 masters all in a row

Yeah, now, but what about all the other times he didn't play anyone worth mentioning?
And who were the players "worth mentioning" in so praised 2009 or 2012? The best player Big3/4 could encounter before QF was someone like Almugro. Often before Semi Final even. Today’s tour is not that spectacular at it’s ceiling, but I’d argue it has TIMES more depth than in period of prime Big3, especially in BO3.
