Nadal himself confirms he asked for Bernardes removal from his matches

Mega lame that Nadal made the request. Even more pathetic that the ATP caved in to him. Terrible precedent for tennis. Star player doesn't like the enforcement of a rule? No prob, we'll just boot any ump that dares to enforce it against you. Bad look for everyone.

Nadal is a slow player. That's his natural game.

Del Potro, Isner, and Berdych are naturally slow players. Most players don't actually complain about slow play as long as the player is consistent about it. The problem with Nadal is there is no consistency in his play. He sometimes plays within the timelimit and actually plays ultra fast, sometimes he slows down dramatically, particularly when behind or at key points.

Nadal slows down dramatically during key moments of the match, which is deliberately against the rules of tennis, particularly when he is attempting to break serve. There is an actual rule where the returner must play to the servers pace within reason, and we all know Nadal doesn't even attempt to do that at times, so let's not pretend Nadal's not breaking any rules here without knowing, nor blame his OCD habits, etc., because it's clear as daylights when he does it.

100% agree with the first part. Message sent by ATP with this decision is so WRONG in so many aspects.... jeez and some people are try to minimize this as "not a big deal?"

Maybe ATP also thinks Bernardes not a good Umpire. İf it is just a time rule ı have seen many umpires giving time violations to Rafa. Some people should stop acting like Bernardes is the only one.

Do you honestly believe that? For me Bernardes is one of the best umpires in the tour. It is no random fact that he is there in a lot of important matches. However, I have not seen him a lot lately, I wondered why, I think I have the answer...

this confuses me to great deal.....I thought Bernaldes was like one of the nicest guys on the tour and was loved by all players ??

I seriously think he isnt a good umpire.Altough ı have to admit ı prefer Rafa not to make such a move.

I wonder if you, being a Rafan, are objective in this matter. Bernardes is one of the best umpires in the tour and well respected. The only one I would say is better is Lahyani. I think he is better and smarter than Pascal "screw you Novak" Maria.

Bernandes is an umpire who makes one or two mistakes nearly every match. I am not talking about only Rafa matches as well. Altough ı dont question every single mistake he makes is for bad intention either.

One or two mistakes in a match is not a big deal really. It is not like that africa look umpire which was a huge mess in any match and has the common sense of a rock. For me, as I said, he is definitely one of the best in the tour, and trust me, I have seen plenty of matches from him, also the infamous one at Rio, where I think he was completely right, not Nadal, who threathened him that he wont umpire any other match with him in the court. I guess he is a man of his word...

I tell you something, and I tell you seriously: I will request you dont umpire my matches anymore (voy a pedir que no me arbitres nunca mas) because I cant stand you (no puedo mas contigo). You are the umpire who puts more pressure on me. I cant stand it anymore. And I dont have any problem with you, but I cant stand it.

This clearly put things in perspective. What a real shame on Nadal and the ATP. Bernardes has my full support

This story is a big snooze fest. Who cares? Newsflash: the top players on the tour have more influence than the average joe. Breaking news right there. You think Macenroe, Connors, Borg, etc didn't strong arm a few things or at least pitch fits and get what they wanted. Why shouldn't Nadal? Move along here. Rafa is and always has been a gracious winner, respectable (at least by professional athlete standards), and well thought of by other players in the locker room. He is the type of guy you look away for every once in a while.

Think Lahyani is hands down the best.
Unlike rest he actually does umpire and correct calls on regular basis, whilst most of others are playing solitaire on their tablets.

Definitely, and he gets involved in the match like a good umpire has to do. No argument on that

Nadal has just sullied the integrity of the sport.

He should have got a ban for asking and, indeed, this should now be a rule.

Awwww, did Nadal hwurt ur itty bitty fweelings.... Again?

Get real, we dont know the demands made by top stars unless they fess up.

Dont act like this has to be the only time a player has made a demand? Sounds like a player years ago got an ump fired, and it seems that Nadal didnt ask that at all.

The amount of utter hurt and dismay baffles me. God, i never would have thought top athletes could act like prima donnas! Say it isnt true? Tell me they dont get violent on a court or curse out other olayers or OMG, paying customers.

Omg, it is only offensive when Nadal does it... Ur whittle itty bitty hyperocrisy is dwuly nwoted.

Thread is TL/DR, but:

If any rule is enforced, it should be enforced uniformly throughout all matches. I can understand Nadal getting upset if he feels this umpire does not go along with the precedent set by the majority of umpires on the tour.

But there is a silliness factor in all of this...

Disclosure: I am a Nadal fan

This will backfire

He's asking for more attention from other umpires. They are a team, they will take a closer look at his time.

Use that 800k watch on your wrist man

Do you think any of them want to be singled-out like #Carlos? LOL. None of them want to be next.

I love watching folks on here getting all upset over Nadal

Do you have pocorn everyday? Cause it seems Nadal is an endless source of angst? Of course, this begs the question about how there will be zero discussions without Nadal.

Chair Umpire Refused To Shake Hands With Fognini

It seems #CarlosBernardes doesn't have the best history with players on-tour.

#AngiesLyst

LOL. How about you tell the whole story? The part where Fognini was yelling at the umpire and making hand gestures? Where Bernardes talks to him while Fognini is doing this, briefly holding his hand back? Then when Bernardes does end up shaking his hand, and going down from his chair to talk to Fognini about the situation? God some posters are just pathetic, use anything that works for their agenda, even if it's misinforming.

yeah, I remember watching this live when it happened. Fognini was basically apologizing for his usual childish antiques. Bernardes hold back briefly while he obviously was explaining the issue and then he shook his hand.

I have not seen Bernardes having problems with players anymore than all the other umpires.

What a real bully on the tour.
He will go down as the greatest bully of all time.

Actually I think Nadal is singled out here. Many umpires have given him time or coaching warnings. Bernardes was not in the Rome match when he got a time warning against Wawa.

Umpires have to do their jobs anyways, singled out or not.

I would love to hear Woodrow's perspective and experience on this situation and any others like it.

Where's Woodrow???!!

Woodrow is someone who never gives away anything, so he probably discovered disappearance as the ultimate form of non-communication.

You have posted about only 5 posts a month for the last 11 years.

I just feel lucky to have seen one,

Nice to meet you, bigserving:cool:

As long as you read bullfan, my pleasure:)

I simply notice obsessions, given how many folks here sadly dont seem to live for more than hating Nadal.

You dont like anything here more than your hate. And you are certainly not alone. I find it beyond sad.

No one should have years of hate vs anything happy. Once again, it is not just you, and I feel for all of you that seem to need your Nadal hate to breathe.

Yawn.

Nothing scandalous, unfair, shocking (etc.) about any of this.

Do people really not know that this is standard practice or are they feigning ignorance?.

I've been aware of this for years.

Very strange that the ATP agreed to this indeed. I must say, in favor of Nadal, that I too find it a little annoying when umpires start giggling over supposedly "funny" things happening on tour. Whenever the players are having a serious discussion with the umpire, I often see the latter replying in a laughing, degrading manner. As if he's not taking the claims of the player seriously.

Although in that case, it would be hard to keep a straight face. I mean come on. How do you come on to the court with your shorts on backwards and not notice. I could see a shirt, but shorts? Really?

Whats makes it even stranger that from his serve routine Nadal should know with his butt(I am serious about this) that his shorts are backwards, should feel some kind of buzz or something. When people are obssesed with something they notice everything about it....

Oh the irony :)

Could be too nervious to prepare for the match? Or maybe too rushed to put the shorts on after a quickie?

Perhaps he should study hard and obtain a PhD in Pantology.

LOL, did he actually say that ? !!!

Did Nadal actually come on court with shorts backwards ?

Or are you all talking about the Fed Wimble incident where he wore his white pants backwards ?

Oh my, is this the new haters' line?, Rafa put the shots on backwards on purpose?.

Lol :)

Well, he DID notice, that's why he changed them.

I think it was Murray who was recently given a warning due to him tying his shoes. SImilar lack of judgement from the umpire.
