Nadal Hints at Ditching Toni

Toni will always have his place - but rafa might get a different perspective from someone else.

I expect Nadal to just win 1 more slam.

Toni or no Toni.

He has pretty much reached his limit.

(His limit is darn good though isn't it, 3 straight slam finals. Take Djokovic away and Nadal will probably win 3 or 4 slams next year, now that he's on top of Del Potro, Murray and Federer. And I haven't even taken into account Nadal's vow to focus on Djokovic and adapt. And now it is Djokovic who looks most injury prone. People forget, Nadal has never had a career-threatening injury. Never had knee-surgery, and never had the typical old man injury - the bad back. Suddenly, Nadal looks headed for a longer career than Djokovic)

What would you call his foot problem in 2004 when he considered taking up golf, a problem that continues to cause him pain?

(When is the last time he withdrew from a tournament because of that? It at least needs to make you miss some matches in 7 years for it to be career-threatening )

Just helping with the nickname decision on the inevitable and eventual account change.

I think you forget what happened to Nadal at Paris 2008, Rotterdam 2009, AO 2010, AO 2011, and Wimby 2011. Just to refresh your memory. Nadal had some very serious scares and it centered around his knees and feet. You know it's all going to catch up sooner or later. Nobody has a more grinding style than Nadal. And now that he's heading for 26 where the body begins to break even moreso, things will get a lot harder. Younger players are entering the game now.
And Del Potro is going to rediscover his best form sooner or later. We saw what he was doing to Nadal before Del Potro's wrist injury. There are going to be more foes to beat next year. Nothing will get easier and there are no guarantees Nadal only has Djokovic to worry about.

IMHO, Rafa needs to work on depth control on his groundies.

His shots usually fall short but even more so when he is tight.

When you see his groundies constantly land around the opponent's service line, you know he is losing the match.

I noticed a significant change in is stroke in the 3rd set where his strokes are deeper and that is when he was dictating plays by moving Novak side to side, eventhough Novak was able to retrieve alot of those balls back but NO ONE in the world can do that all day long so if Rafa watch the tape, like NFL football teams do, then he can figure out what he did right and wrong in the match.

Basically go back to Babolat and have them design a racket with more power to give him more depth so that he can dictate those plays over and over and over again. but then again like anything in tennis, there is no perfect solution to a problem, if the racket is too powerfull, it's harder to generate/cut acute angle....

Just adding some lead tape and increasing the grip size from 1/4 to a grown up's size should help cut down on the overly topspun short balls.

Djoko won't go away. He will continue to be the best player on tour for 2 more years. Of course he won't dominate like 2011 losing only 3 matches by September but he can very well win 2 slams next year and 2 slams more in 2013. Add to that winning masters series here and there as well as WTFs and he will be the #1 for a couple more years.

Right now he is resting. Watch him come back and win the WTF in dominating fashion.

IMO it would be a great idea to "ditch" Toni, and make him his personal uncle. After about 20 years of coaching it's time to move on. I think after Roddick retires, Larry Stefanki might be a good person to work with.

Late 2014 should have been when a Carlos Moya came on board, rather than 2 years after that.

Toni did help Rafa to bounce back in 2012, so leaving in 2011 (at the time of this thread) would have been premature.

This was a phenomenal decision, even though it came six years too late. IMO he should've parted ways in 2014
Moya came on board in late 2016. Toni left at the end of 2017.

Uncle Toni's ego was too big to let go.
Or Uncle Toni's IQ was too small to realize his time was up...
Rafa kept him out of loyalty, so it was up to Uncle Toni to end it.
Ended it WAY too late.
He lost almost three years or even more in distancing himself from his uncle.
He could have won at least a couple more Major titles if he had made the right decision in due course.
:(
