Nadal in Basel

Beating Cilic in Basel in those conditions on the back of beating Wawrinka and Raonic in Shanghai is further evidence of the huge strides in Nadal's game as he seeks to get back to the very top of the game. Suddenely 2016 is really exciting....it is Olympic year perhaps Nadal was having a bit of a timeout this year...just a thought.

Those are the streakiest players on the tour who didnt play good.

Your prediction of Nadal dominating 2016 could very well come true Gary.
LOL. Thank you, Djokovic2011, because I know you are good natured and you mean this (and you are not just being sarcastic). But I think you have nothing to worry about yet. As things stand, right now I'd be glad if Rafa takes the FO and Djokovic takes the other 3.

nadal fighting spirit is back for sure. Nadal never been dominant this part of season. Don't think Nadal played near his best today, and I don't think he will win AO at all. But he is getting there.. FH placement must be way much better. At least he is fighting and thats something we haven't seen so much this year. He is cooking something exciting for 16 I think... Lets see

Moving on the court is much better, but serving and hitting forehand is at the same place where it is all year-gone missing. I don't see anything encouraging in his game right now. Definitely still not in the same league with Djokovic,Murray and even Federer. He's open to lose against people like Cilic,Rosol,Dimitrov etc. Tomorrow will be interesting match with Gasquet, I hope he proves me wrong.

Rafa's serve still sucks. that will be his undoing against Federer and Novak

Rafa begins to have a better fight in matches for the last month or something. Game wise he is still not looking the same player as he once was.

His game seems on track, step by step, tomorrow's match against Richou Gasquet will be easy for him, the final will be his big test if Federer reaches too, Roger seemed today to raise his own level and won't have an off day tomorrow against a no-backhand Sock.
2016 will be surely interesting, specially if Nadal, Murray and Federer have a great end of the season.

Nadal has made a statement he is not taking any holiday this xmas. So we have to wait and see which Nadal shows up in 16. I expect him quite much better, both serve and FH placement.

What is more concerning is the racquet change, if he change that right after wtf it will take more than a month to adjust. He has said he will change racquet after season 15.

You have to admire his fighting spirit but on the tennis front I am less convinced. He's still not getting much consistent depth on his forehand.

Still hope we wil get a Fedal final. Federer is making hard work of things too...

Where did he say that? I hadn't heard that.

I just watched the Cillic highlights and I saw a bunch of killer FH's. He still probably drops too many short in general, but those winners looked much better than anything that's come off his FH side all year, so that is a very good sign.

His new racquet was tested this spring already but after a few weeks he went back to the old one. Then I think it was Toni saying they will practice with the new racquet again after season 15. The new racquet has been in stores for a while I think. If he gets used to the new racquet his shots will be more powerful and hard thats for sure. Hope the transition goes fast and well ;)

Not just serve forehand still sucks as well. The only thing that seems to be back is fighting spirit. That alone wont be good enough against the top 3.

It's a bit better than, say, 3 month ago.

His serves and backhands, at the moment, do not exactly have the venom of his top form.
That last 1% is always the hardest.

Downhill since they put that microchip in his racket, he still doesnt know what that thing does, its like voodoo he claims

Its a quite different racquet he is going to try out more. It will have significance impact impact than a microchip :) It will fit him better for his age and give him more power in his strokes.

I don't know if Babolat is advertising he uses his new racquet now.. If he does is not right. Last time he changed racquet they advertised too early, and people that bought the racquet that also addressed that to Babolat(That rafa didn't use it) got $50 back.

They now put disclaimers in the ads where they arent noticable. Players now "endorse" this racket, no longer claim to use it on sites like tennis warehouse that dont use print ads.

That's good to head
Huh?

Considering this post US Open period is EASILY the least comfortable time of year for him (or in the last 5 years maybe second to grass courts) I'd say you'd have to be pretty foolish to not be fairly happy with what we've been seeing since Beijing. That's a long way from saying he's going to come all the way back and dominate again (let's see what happens tomorrow) but if he can compete with most of these top 10 guys again under his least favoured conditions then here's to the future.
