* Nadal’s recovery from tendinitis progressing well

* Could be at peak fitness for U.S. Open, expert says

* Spaniard free of pain before final grand slam of 2009

By Iain Rogers

MADRID, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Rafael Nadal’s recovery from tendinitis in both knees appears to be progressing so well that he could be back at peak fitness for the U.S. Open, according to a sports injury specialist at the University of California.

The Spanish world number three said in June he had been playing with pain in his knees for nine months and was out for 10 weeks before making his return at this month’s Montreal Masters.

He fell in the last eight to Juan Martin del Potro but went one round better at the Cincinnati Masters, losing on Saturday in the semi-finals to Novak Djokovic.

The pain had gone and he said the result was even better than he hoped for going into the final grand slam of 2009 starting on Aug. 31, the only one to elude him.

“Nadal is a younger player so he certainly has a bigger capacity to heal,” said Anthony Luke, an associate professor and director in Primary Care Sports Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco.

“He’s definitely competitive which is a great sign,” he added. “I do think he has a chance to be at his peak at the U.S. Open and his rhythm and performance should continue to improve as long as the knee doesn’t give any setbacks.”

Luke said Nadal’s specific knee problems were particularly common among tennis players because of the amount of stopping and starting and also afflicted basketball players and other jumping athletes.

Nadal’s physical style of play, which relies on power and athleticism in contrast to his more graceful rival Roger Federer, puts him more at risk, Luke added.

PURE POWER

“Rafael Nadal is pure power and plays the game at 100 percent intensity so each match he is putting so much more pressure on his tendons,” Luke said.

“In his favour are his athleticism and his conditioning, which are outstanding. If anyone can come back from something like this it’s a guy like Nadal.

“He’s obviously very motivated and disciplined with his training and this will help in the healing process.”

In very serious cases, surgery would be attempted to strip away scar tissue on the tendon, but Nadal’s reasonably rapid recovery without the need to go under the knife suggested his problems were not especially serious, Luke said.

“You wouldn’t want to resort to surgery early on because you would be traumatising the tendon,” he said.

“If he can recover without it’s much better and indicates his injury is less serious.”

The best-of-five sets matches at the U.S. Open will present an additional challenge to Nadal’s recovery and he remained cautious after the Cincinnati event.

“We will see how I am physically to play the five set matches,” he said.

“I know when I am playing well I can play at this level. But you only can win against these top players when you are playing your best tennis.”

So apparently Rafa is now the #1 contender for the title?

He is always the top contender every tournament he enters.......

When Nadal wins, he is fit & raring to go.....and the corollary when nadal loses, he is always injured, tired & unfit......

as long as you can apply that heuristic....you are fine :)

What's the use in Nadal being in top form for the US Open? :???:

He's peaking too late. He needed his top form for Cincinnati, the REAL slam.

Cincinnati is a Master's event, not a Slam. The real Slam is the USO. Watch out for Nadal there boz if he beats Federer, a Fedex rep will be ready in Basil to ship the FO and W trophies to Mallorca.

YET this is what they post on CNN:

NEW YORK (AP) -- Rafael Nadal concedes he probably isn't in peak condition heading into the U.S. Open.
The Spanish star returned to competition this month after taking off more than two months because of tendinitis in both knees. Now he's seeking the one major title he hasn't won.
"Well, I am No. 3 in the world. And the No. 3 in the world should have a chance to win, no?" Nadal told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "But I don't know if I arrive in the best condition."
Nadal and Serena Williams hit tennis balls for charity on a makeshift court on Broadway in the middle of Manhattan. They showed off the Nike outfits they'll wear during the day at the Open: a hot pink dress for Williams, a bright yellow shirt with teal headband for Nadal.
One of the reasons Nadal decided not to defend his Wimbledon title was that he found himself thinking too much about his knees.
"After an injury, sure, you think about it a little bit," he said. "But I am much better, I feel."

Looks like a new excuse everyday from this guy.

Nah I was just messing, although I do think Nadal would beat Del Potro if they met.

I dont. I highly doubt Nadal has miracelously improved that much in the short time since Canada that the lopsided result there would be reversed, especialy as his play in Cincinnati the week after was zero improvement from Canada.

im saying here, right now, that nadal will win the usopen. if he doesnt, i will never post here again.

Stupid, you better keep your word. The fewer *********s the better. It is even better than the bet that you proposed earlier if Nadal with me for 1-month from posting on this site.

Better keep your word and don't post anymore if Nadal loses. I'll keep mine to stay away if Nadal advances beyond 4th round.

Stupid fool.

i havent seen you in awhile

Well he's 100%. However, if he loses, the first thing he's gonna say is that he's tired or his knees are acting up again.

after being crushed at the real slam in cincy, i'm not sure how well he'd do at a teensy event like the us open.

maybe sureshs can enlighten me.

Back OT:

Nadal can be at 200% physically it doesn't make a difference. He clearly still rusty when it comes to his tennis senses. His serve is very attackable and his anticipation isn't quite there yet. Heck, DelPo made him look slow.

I'm glad Nadal feels 100%.
His game is not however, he still needs to fine tune his strokes.
It shouldn't take too long, many players have got into match shape in a month or so.
He can practice this week and hope to not get upset in the first week of the UO. That should be enough.

I heard Soderling is looking for him.

I think he'll make it past fourth round.

haha funny guy

Not really. He has a history of doing that. A lot of times after he loses, he'll go on and say how his knees hurt or how tired he was and then to cover it up, he'll go and say something good about his opponents.

I don't believe this article. Rafa said in an earlier interview that he had been playing with pain in his knees for a long time and it had gotten to the point where it was so bad, he had to take time off to deal with it. So now his knees are magically cured because he took about 5 weeks off? He took two months off last year when he skipped the year end masters. Six months later he was back to being side-lined because of his knees.

This problem is not going to go away.

Another crap article when they ask an "expert" about Rafa's condition when he hasn't even examined him personally, but give out half-assed opinnions cause he want to see his name in the paper,or in this case in an article on the Internet.

He gives out a few general remarks about tendinitis and goes on to say that Nadal will heal faster because he is younger. This guy obviously hasn't seen Nadal's tendinits problems which have been plaguing him for a few years now forcing him to pull out of tournaments earlier and earlier each season because of prolonged pain due to overuse.

Each body heals according to its own possibilites at the time.Nadal's doctor said he should be fine in 3-4 weeks.Nadal said he was feeling some pain even after almost 2 months.

But knees aren't problem going into the USO.His game is the one that needs tuning.Nadal said in cincy that his knees are good. When he says he's not quite ready yet,he's talking about the level of his game, because even if he beats the lower ranked players he needs to step it up against the big guys and so far he hasn't been able to do that yet.
