Nadal is 2-12 in Grand Slam Matches when down 0-2 in sets

He had great chance to make it 3-12, now it's 2-13.
For the record, the two wins after being 2 sets down were against youzhny in 2007 Wimbledon and lubijic in 2005 madrid

someone did say that nadal has some of the best stats when he's 2-0, one of the best front runners, but when he's down 2 sets, his stats aren't the best. oddly i think in this category fed has him beat. you know with all the talks about mental toughness and all, not that i think it's the only way to measure mental toughness, something i think gets thrown around a lot

fed has come down from 2 sets to love down 10 times overall. I think Murray has the same #of comebacks as well.

Nadal just 3 in Bo5 (2 grand slam matches + madrid final vs ljubicic in 2005)

Yeah, the topic of mental toughness can be attacked from so many statistical angles.

Mental toughness is a curious thing, and manifests itself in many different ways.

Muller for example today was both a clinical choker as a mental titan.

yeah i guess also those stats are inflated because it depends on how many times they even go 0-2. i will assume fed managed to come back more often because he was down more often? even with that, i think fed's ability to come back is often overlooked

Everyone is. You think it's common to win a match when you're down 0-2 sets? Lol You will lose the huge majority.
But Federer and Murray are incredible when going down 2-0, compared to the rest of the field. If I'm not mistaken, they both must have atleast 9-10 career wins from 2-0 down.

nope.

youzhny in wim 07 and kendrick in wim 06

ljubicic in madrid 05 was not in a slam.

those are the 3 he has overall.

not sure, but I don't think fed has gone down 2 sets to love that much more than nadal.

Yes, this is completely at odds with the perception of Rafa as mentally unbreakable.

yes, nadal is 2-13 in GS matches now (13.33%)

I just checked for federer. (after being down 2 sets to love in slams)

he's 9-27 overall in slams (25%)

but split into 2 :
before 2004 , it was 2-12 (14.28%)
after 2004, it is 7-15 (31.81%)

Edit : 1. Corrected.
2. The 10 comeback overall was the 2 sets to love comeback vs Nadal in Miami 05 final.

Rafa is old now. Can anybody possibly deny he wasn't mentally unbreakable from 2005-2013? His peak, like Fed's, is long gone. These types of losses will mount as he gets older. They already have started. Peak Nadal never would have lost to Fognini at the USO, he would have beaten Fed in Australia and he would won the Muller match today.

federer's main criticisms were his bo5 record, and his specific h2h with rafa.

the b05 record is more a test of physical endurance than mental toughness.

but 0-2 down, and in breakers federer is a beast....

i think sampras and djokovic are also quite strong 0-2 down, but someone has break out the stats...djok and pete were very strong in breakers as well.

------------
rafa's mental toughness comes from his ability to concentrate, and his physical endurance.

Actually Nadal is 2-20 when down 2 sets to love.

Murray 8 from 30 = 27%
Federer 9 from 36 = 25%
Djokovic 4 from 23 = 17%
Nadal 2 from 20 = 10%

For me I don't think there is that much we can take out of this statistic except maybe the ability of a player to "play into form". Federer is somewhat notorious for slow starts early in slams and tends to get better later in matches against non-top-10 opponents.

One way of looking at it is that out of all these players, Nadal has been down 0-2 the fewest number of times. I think that goes to show typically how strong and focused he is right from the start. Players like Federer and Murray appear to use their first set as a warmup and start really flowing at the tail end of matches, whereas Nadal is straight into it from the beginning. This does mean however that if he's off that day, he's going to be off from the start and will probably lose having lost the first two sets.

Federer has 10...I remember seeing Fed have 10 multiple times (including non slams).
If you include Davis Cup, Olympics, bo5 Masters

Federer is 10 from 42 = 24%
Murray 9 from 33 = 27%
Djokovic 4 from 28 = 14%
Nadal 3 from 22 = 14%

yeah, no, federer was actually a fast starter at his peak. Like a bulldozer. from 2004-07, he went down 2 sets to love only once: kuerten in 04 RG.

I'd actually suggest checking dividing total # of these matches with total # of matches played by these guys at slams.

federer : 36/369 (9.756%)
nadal : 20/252 (7.93%)

nadal's % will probably increases as he ages.

Murray of course is not as good as these guys, manages to get himself in some unnecessary tangles and then get out of them.

on the flip side, would be curious to know about the opposite in regards to how many matches big 4 have lost two sets up.

Yup for that 3-year window Federer started fast, and that is backed up by the few times going down 0-2, so that confirms my point.

Good idea.

Nadal lost a 2-0 lead against Federer in 2005, and was Fognini-ed in 2015. Something like 2-170.
Federer lost a 2-0 lead to: Djokovic and Tsonga in 2011. Can't see many others. Perhaps @aceX could help?

I think partially the reason for this is because Rafa is a streaky player.

If he's 2-0 down in sets, it's because he's being comprehensively outplayed.

Fed OTOH when he goes down 2-0 in sets, part of it is often because of of poor decision-making on his part at crucial points, so playing sensible tennis stops the bleeding.

Federer and Djokovic both have better serve games and more sensible return games when a match gets tough. Now that Nadal's serve is a lot better, at least he's come back from 2-0 down to force a fifth, so that's progress.

Slams lost after 2-0 ahead
Murray 1 of 135
Djokovic 1 of 172
Nadal 1 of 170
Federer 2 of 252

All 5 set matches lost after 2-0 ahead
Murray 1 of 159
Djokovic 2 of 196
Nadal 2 of 192
Federer 4 of 302

Edit: Fixed the Murray stat, good spotting by @ByakuFubuki

Federer maybe sometimes, but he is rather well-known for breaking in the opponent's first service game and then just steamrolling him. Especially against a so-called "promising" next-generation player or against a servebot.

nope.

youzhny in wim 07 and kendrick in wim 06

ljubicic in madrid 05 was not in a slam.

those are the 3 he has overall.
So, the last time that Nadal came back from a 2-0 hole was 10 years ago?!!!!

That's incredible!

Another one missing is Wawrinka, he is 6 - 27 (6-21 for only Grand Slams)

What I find way more stunning:
Federer has only one 5-setter that he lost after coming back from 0-2. That is the famous 2008 Wimbledon final vs Nadal.

ByakuFubuki

yes, nadal is 2-13 in GS matches now (13.33%)

I just checked for federer. (after being down 2 sets to love in slams)

he's 9-27 overall in slams (25%)

but split into 2 :
before 2004 , it was 2-12 (14.28%)
after 2004, it is 7-15 (31.81%)

Edit : 1. Corrected.
2. I remember the 2 sets to love comeback vs Nadal in Miami 05 final. not able to remember what the 10th comeback overall is.
But you already answered in the previous sentence. 9 in Grand Slam Matches + 1 in Miami against Nadal = 10 Comebacks.

You must have made a typo in your previous Post then, because it says Murray never lost from two Sets up in Grand Slam Matches.

The commentators were saying with his history he would be the favourite to win when he got back to 2-2 based on his past history. No idea why that would be.

What do we have here? A bunch of teenagers losing in straight sets. They went down 0-2 and then lost the third set as well. Did anyone expect a different outcome?

If anything you'd have to qualify by only starting the count from the point they reached the top 10, or only counting matches against opponents of equal or lower rank.

Otherwise you're in part measuring how long it took those players to become good, not how good they are at erasing a deficit.
