I don't get "scared" when any player is playing and might lose. But I do get REALLY nervous when I'm stupid enough to get emotionally invested in a tennis match. ;)

The AO final left me with an upset stomach and insomnia. I swore I was not going to watch the match, live, at some stupid time in the morning. I was only going to watch a little, go to sleep, then wake up and find out what happened.

Logical...

But then I watched the first set and stayed up for the whole thing. :D

Question: do you think either Nadal or Fed has a reasonable chance to stay at or close to #1 in 2018?

I think this might be the last year we see either of them in this dominant a position...
Nadal is 5 years younger than Federer. Nadal will be 32 next year, which is 4 years younger than Fed now. If Fed can still win slams now, there's no reason to assume that Nadal will not be dominant next year.

Federer the 'better' off clay returner has:

TWO losses to Isner, Nadal has ZERO.
ONE loss to Karlovic, Nadal has ZERO.
THREE losses to Raonic, Nadal has TWO.

So overall, Fed has SIX losses to the 3 main serve bots Nadal has only 2.

No wonder Fed fans are a bunch of sour grapes...

Both won slams in a year when the former top two players were either to injured to play well or entirely out of competition, and with so many other players injured it is likely that the injury situation next year will determine ranking more than anything else.

The only guy that can come back and really threaten Nadal is top form Djokovic. That's the only player that can stop Nadal next year.

I don't think either of them will be #1. What has happened this year is too good for both of them. might win a slam, but will be #3 and below I think.

djokovic and murray will be back. so will stan.

to me, next gen(+) - zverev, kyrgios, shapo, thiem (on clay) seems to have more of the x-factor than weakest gen (nishi, raonic, dimi).

Nishi and raonic will be limited by their injury prone bodies, but still still have some time on their side.
Remains to see what dimi can do - he's played great tennis this year at times - brisbane (beating 3 top players), AO (run to the semi), cincy (win without dropping a set )

then there is delpo who can play spoiler anywhere
and cilic who is a threat on anything except clay (faster surfaces even more so)

I'm seeing it the same way. Regardless what happens in 2018, it's most likely to be a lot more wide open than the last few years. If new players step up and win, I'm more than ready for it!

After over one and a half hours of play, Djokovic had won no break points on Medvedev's serve at the 2021 USO Final.

Standing 10 meters behind the baseline, trying to just put the ball in play, that's the Greatest Return of serve ladies and gentlemen. 8-B

Edit: Just imagine this the greatest returner of all time in the 80s or 90s on a fast as speed of light surfaces, with the ball skidding extremely low, and without the help of the modern string technology, against the bombers of the likes of Sampras, Ivanisevic, Krajicek etc.

To be fair, he choose what best works for him, seeing his success, I will say he may be one of the good returner.
But I don't think outside clay he is best.

His return as a shot is in complete service of his baseline game. He just puts the ball in play and then he looks to overwhelm his opponents with his endless retrieving. That is all to be said about Nadal's return. ;)
