Nadal is finished and should retire

But Sampras always had a crushing game when he found his form, so he was able to win by just playing good tennis for one last tournament.

Nadal cannot beat other top players on pure talent. He totally depends on the physical part of the game, and if that’s gone for good, the whole player is gone.
This. Sampras had the serve. He had complete trust in his serve even if he's losing the match. Crisp volleys too. So even if Pete lost his lateral movement, he just needs to come forward. Nadal doesn't have any of this. He doesn't have a go-to killer shot. Never had the serve, never had the volleys. He's pure physicality and that's what made his forehand clicked. Losing that would mean disaster. He's not like Federer who hoarded all the talents when God gave them to this world.

I don't know but for me Sampras had the right idea, i.e. to go out on a high note by winning a slam. I don't like to see great players struggle the way Nadal has been struggling. I don't think his legacy will be affected but it's sad to see.

I am a huge Nadal fan, have been ever since i first saw him in 2004 before he was famous. Loved his attitude and the way every point was his last. We will never see his like again, and to me he is the greatest tennis player i have seen, although i expect Djookovic to assume that mantle in about 12 months but still, Rafa has had a career that is more than he could have dreamed of.

But his fans and the man himself need to now face reality. He is finished, his game is now obsolete as he is too slow in his movement to carry it off so now his shots are like hitting practice for opponents. Unlike the other Icon of the past decade, Federer, Nadal does not have the god given talent to mask his physical decline as his whole game was built around the physical edge he had over opponents. Even Federer though gets exposed against the other true great of the past decade, Djokovic. But Federer has the talent still to take care of the less gifted players, but Nadal does not and as such, he should announce his retirement at this years FO.

Anyone who thinks Nadal has a chance of winning the FO needs to take the blindfold off. Forget Djokovic, Nadal wont compete with any of the top 10, they will simply hit him off the court. Federer is suffering at the hands of Djokovic but he isnt embarrrassing himself at all, Nadal is and it is trajic to see.

His entourage is his biggest problem...they make alot of money off him so clearly they wont be telling him the brutal truth, which is that he is finished as a world class major winning tennis player, or even Masters 1000.
Finland is quite cold right now, hence Rafa enjoying the sunshine in Melbourne. Vamos!!

Rafael Nadal has an incredible fighting spirit and never say die attitude on court.

I loved the quote that he is ready to die to win Grand Slam titles again. Just sums the GOAT up.
That will be the debate until the end of time; "who's the real GOAT?" Federer possesses most if not all the important records, topping all male players in the OPEN era with 17 majors & weeks @ #1! This match tomorrow will be huge for both of these finalist; adding to their totals (Fed +1=18 & Rafa +1=15) and the H2H would becoming more pronounced with Nadal already owning Fed on all surfaces for the most part! If Rafa gets to 15 majors and has such a pronounced lead over his closest rival, questions will be raised! We had already started doing it for Nole who's just 2 majors behind Rafa! Since Djokovic has been more consistent over the years with excellence more common in this generation with Fedalic, I definitely have been giving the nod to Nole over Rafa, but if things don't change much, Rafa will solidify his position at least as #2 ALL TIME if he wins this AO! He'll be a Olympic Gold Double Career Grand Slam winner with only Nole with an opportunity in Paris this summer to match the CGS moniker! Nole couldn't afford this much of a slide making only 1 major final and winning none since completing his "Nole-Slam!" I feel like I'm in a time warp with these 2 players on Soc. Sec. disability making a major final; for shame on Grigor and Stan! One should have risen to the challenge and finished off one of these geezers! :p ;)

Another reason not to make predictions. :D

The reality is that almost every year that Nadal has been fit he has dominated the clay court season. It's his thing! And the field is particularly weakened this year.

The old threads are coming out of the woodwork, but Nadal's return to form on clay really doesn't invalidate past views.
?????

It doesn't invalidate past views in what world? Nadal is in the position to sweep all the clay tournaments, something he wasn't able to do in his prime. He's made changes and improvements to his game, i.e. his serve, backhand, court positioning. What he's doing now absolutely invalidates these dumb threads.

One makes predictions based on current observations. And the future is always open to change. You make predictions, however, based on obsession.

They've found the antidote to aging now
Nadal has been eating a lot of prunes recently as he read that they are full of antioxidants.

The downside is that now his buttpicking is no longer habitual but absolutely necessary.

Also, it is why Nadal has been able to run faster and takes routine toilet breaks between sets.

If someone has won the FO nine times it's hard to describe their current season as 'incredible'.
That's certainly a point. Though you also make note how past predictions we're accurate at the time. That's why it's incredible to me he's turned his form around and swept the whole season so far. It might not be worth calling it incredible because of his ridiculous record already but It's definitely a great turn around for him.

There is Fed and Pete ( Rafa likely to join them ) in one group who made the miraculous comebacks, but most other legends like Borg, Connors , McEnroe and Wilander never got back to the heights they achieved.
Tell me about it! When they fell, they fell! Borg left before it became apparent decline was imminent! Connors helped and hurt his legacy by hanging on too long! He won 2 majors and got back to #1 in '82 when thought to be no better than 3 or 4 with Borg, McEnroe, & Lendl heading the tour! Wilander's fall was probably the most precipitous after winning 3 majors and taking over #1 ranking in '88! You can say the same thing happened to Nole after so much success in '11 & '15, but Wilander dropped off the map! Between being burned out and losing his dad, I barely knew he was on the tour from 1990-96! With Sampras, it's hard to say that was a comeback by winning the '02 USO over his "pigeon," Andre Agassi! He had gone over 2 years without winning a title of any kind, but there was no resurgence since he retired soon after! This thing with Fedal is "supernatural" and my skin is beginning to crawl a little! Been watching too many movies dealing with making agreements for a "resurgence" and dominance so late in their careers! It's unprecedented; even with what Connors did in '82! "Imma scared; is the Apocalypse upon us?" Season '06 continues to be mirrored in so many ways! :p ;)

i'd say it's a bit premature (again) to be writing off mr. nadal. there are just as many questions, if not more, about the futures of
mr. djoko and mr. murray. after all, it's not like rafa has been kicking around for years with no success. he's the defending FO champion (again), for
heaven's sake.
