He was always improving steadily but his English has improved tremendously since his injury. I'm very impressed. Anyone know how he did this?
Make a joke if you wish :) but I'm really curious.

I don't think it has necessarily improved tremendously since his injury, I think it always gets better after he gets away from Mallorca for a few weeks/months. He probably seldom uses it when he's at home and it gets a little rusty but once he's thrust back into the media glare and constant interviews and the locker room where he needs to speak it most of the time, his ease and fluidity comes back.

Nadal doesn't usually speak English, but when he does, he prefers to end every sentence with a question, no?

Sure and although there are plenty of English speaking people on Mallorca...I'm sure he isn't mingling with the tourists as much as his own posse. But it has gotten tremendously better since he began not necessarily since the injury. And thank god he will never lose that fantastic accent that makes him so especially Spanish. He has certainly come a long way. But rest assured if your visiting Mallorca there are enough Europeans who have high command of the English language.

Impressive guy (humbly so) all around I'd say. I only pray he doesn't get to good that he loses his terrific accent :)

Nadal's english has been good for a while. His accent however is VERY thick so he gets no credit for how well he does know what he's talking about.

Now telling the truth is being negative? Lol. Some of you don't seem to be able to handle honesty much at all.

Yup, telling the truth that he will lose every time he plays....... against Harrison, Gulbis, Berdych, Federer and Delpo. Never acknowledging a win by him is a great trait of being a fan.

You Clarky has the mark of a fan. Bravo !!

When Rafa speaks english, you understand exactly what he's saying. That's fluent.

No, that's not fluent. He does not have a wide vocabulary in English, and struggles with some basic stuff. I'm not picking on him about this by telling it like it is. Even he would admit that his English is poor, and that he struggles with it a lot.

"No?" actually means "you know".

It's used basically the same way.

I haven't noticed his English being any different, but if you guys say it has improved, I will take your word for it :)

I don't know if I would call it fluid, it's true his vocabulary isn't very big, but he understand what people say to him and finds a way to express what he wants to say.

Compare it now to even 2008 and there is a massive difference, I wouldn't necessarily call him fluent but he has a good understanding of the language now and his phrases flow a lot better.

It is obviously "proof" that he is doping LOL

Glad you finally see the light. Its been well known in the National Spelling Bee circuit that synthetic steroids are rampant. They increase word retention and memory as well as expand intellect.

He is a master in disguising. He disguises his healthy knee with humongous tape, he disguises his hard court prowess by complaining about it, he disguises his superiority by claiming himself as the least favourite to win anything, he disguises his erratic English by speaking it very very very fast, no?

In his IW victory speech, Rafa's English virtually sounded so fluent because he spoke it very fast so that his erratic English sounded fluently fast.

It would be a tremendous achievement for Rafa if :

1. He can use words other than "fantastic" in every victory speech.
2. He can say "When the earthquake ceased" instead of "I finish the earthquake"
3. He can say "Firstly, I'd like to say..." instead of "I can just say..."
4. He curses in English and gets illegal coaching in English as well.

And what makes you so sure that the english speaking population are that fluent in english and understandable. You ought to try and understand some of the different accents we have here in the uk!

Accent is one thing, pathetic mistake in basic grammar is another.

"I finish the earthquake and my legs were like this" is an example of Rafa's inadequate command of English.

"The bloody earthquake's gone 'n me legs were feckin' wobbling" is way much better.

For Toni's sake, Rafa couldn't even understand when someone said a word as simple as "Cow" and somebody had to translate it for him.

so much hate by some posters on this thread..

why can't you just respect the fact that he makes an effort to speak the language well enough to communicate what is important about his matches/tennis?

The statement of "Nadal is now fluent in English" is invalid, therefore it deserves a lot of disapproval.

Because "cow" is a word you'd hear so often in s tennis context you mean?. You'd hear it all over when playing, practising, being in the locker room...
And I'm not even sure he didn't know the word, maybe he was surprised someone had been given a cow, and the interviewer thought he didn't know the word.

And I wonder how many "pathetic mistakes in basic grammar" you'd make when talking in another language.

Yep. I've said it before, pure cultural arrogance.

Nadal was quoting Shakespeare the other day, so I'd say he is there now ..

.. along with Nole and Tips, and slightly ahead of Murray and Fred who don't read beyond menu cards and flight schedules.
