Mikel Sanchez, the surgeon who treated Rafael Nadal's knees earlier this year, tells Marca that the injury has healed but the physical toll of training and playing could cause it to re-occur at some stage.

"The tendon is cured -- wider, with a different physical appearance, but cured," said Sanchez. "At the moment I'm not doing anything, but will probably have to return.

"He's going to continue at the same rhythm and there is a risk that his tendons will degenerate again. That is why you cannot say this is a permanent treatment. Plus, it could occur in other tendons such as the Achilles."

Nadal received injections of enriched blood plasma in his knees in May and July. After winning Monte Carlo, he missed Barcelona to undergo treatment. Since then, he has lost only three matches and won five tournaments, which includes the French Open, Wimbledon and the U.S. Open.

"It was incredible that he could keep playing with his knees like they were," said Sanchez of Nadal's condition earlier this year. "He has to understand that as he gets older he has to have a balance."

He will as soon as he loses in a Major.

EXACTLY! Because that's the only way he will lose!

Rafa is the man. Never crumbles under pressure and always gives 100% and best of all... He doesn't cry when he loses, he takes it like a man unlike some woosbag's going around

Nobody can outplay Rafa Nadal. He will only lose if he's injured!

Vamos!

The troll count on this forum is reaching critical levels. If this keeps up, the board will self-destruct.

Given Rafael's age and medical advice, it would be prudent for him to change his training schedule (less is better) and tournament schedule (minimal at best) if he wants to be healthy enough to play into his early 30's.

"When I arrived to the locker room, I sat down and, as it's normal after losing the final of the tournament that you dream of winning, against the (world) No. 1 and with lots of chances, I started to cry of anger, of sadness," Nadal said, after losing the Wimbledon 2007 final.

There's nothing wrong in crying. The big difference is that he did it in private, he didn't rain on anyones parade.

He doesn't want to play past 30. People forget he's been on tour since 2002.

blood plasma injection = DOPING ?

I think any sort of injection of foreign substance to the body to enhance athlete's performance can be considered as doping!!!!!! I mean, without the injection, Nadal wouldn't be able to play all those gruelling matches.

Nice trolling.

Next time some athlete gets a lung infection, he'd better not to get shot penicillin. Or better yet, no anesthesia for operations.

Follow this link http://www.wada-ama.org/en/News-Cen...New-Scientific-Research-Projects-for-Funding/, and you will read the following,

'In addition, platelet-derived preparations (commonly referred as PRP), which are currently prohibited when used by intra-muscular route, have been removed from the 2011 List after consideration of the lack of current evidence concerning the use of these methods for purposes of performance enhancement. Current studies on platelet-derived preparations do not demonstrate potential for performance enhancement beyond a potential therapeutic effect. WADA will however continue to closely monitor developments of these preparations.'

Using your own blood can hardly be called a foreign substance. Would you consider surgery, which many athletes undergo, as performance enhancing?

well then, it's a good thing that blood plasma is not a foreign substance to the body, so you won't need to concern yourself with fears of doping.

Yeah, know what?

The 2012 Maya-Calender might well come true. In that case, noone will ever feel the need to worry about any GOAT discussion in tennis anymore. :)

...Sanchez, who is a long term physician for Rafael Nadal, has suggested they should concentrate Federer's plasma and inject it to Nadal knees. So far Nadal has refused to go under such treatment, but has not dismissed the possibility completely...

He probably will get injured again at some point. Given the way he plays and his history it seems inevitable. That is why I predict Roger to regain his #1 ranking briefly at some point and go past Sampras's total weeks of #1. However the injury setback, when it comes, wont stop Nadal from coming back strong and winning more slams and returning to #1 like he has done in the past.
