Good sign he's still practicing... I highly doubt, however, he'll make it past the quarters. IF that. The man's not match ready in any way/shape/form. Tired of all the retirements and withdrawals.
I think if he’s fit enough to last the tournament, he’ll have the game to go far. I don’t think he’ll be rusty.

BESIDE CILIC, DO YOU THINK ANDERSON, NISHIKIRI OR THIEM (MY BET IS THE AUSTRIAN WILL NOT REACH THE QF) CAN DEFEAT 70% NADAL AT MELBOURNE?
I DONT THINK SO

Damn. I already felt something wrong when I saw him withdrew from the 3rd place match in Abu Dhabi. Hopefully he will be 100% fit and healthy at Australian open 2019. Fingers crossed
According to Toni the thigh injury happened the day before he left Mallorca for Abu Dhabi.

Rafa Nadal will not play in Brisbane. The Manacor announced on Wednesday morning that he would not play the tournament in the state capital of Queensland. The aim of the Balearic is to arrive in good conditions to the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, in which he would participate with only one match played in the last five months.

His uncle and former coach, Toni Nadal , tells El Larguero why this resignation. "He has a muscle strain that was made here in Manacor the day before traveling to Abu Dhabi," he explains.

"Rafa has explained the subject and told me that there were doubts and that they have advised him not to do it, that he has nothing worrying, but you have to be careful, theoretically it is nothing and that as a precaution it is best not to play" , he adds.

"If Rafa kept playing like this, he had the risk of relapse to be a month away," says Toni, now focused on the Manacor Academy.

So he had the injury before heading to Abu Dhabi. Explains why he was playing oddly against Anderson. Wasn’t serving his usual way, wasnt running to every ball.

"I really believe that I will be 100 per cent ready for Melbourne”.....that is incredible, people assume he'll only be 70% but he's thinking about 100%:)
well, last year he was not ready.
If he had been, he would have easily beaten the peque in a couple of hours, then more rested he would have defeated Cilic in straight sets, he would not have had problems in defeating the British in the semifinals before facing Federer again in the final.
So, is it true that Spanish will reach 100 percent this time?
mmm ... pretty doubtful.

Cilic pushed Federer to 5 sets, and Nadal led Cilic 2 sets to 1, so Nadal wasn't too far off.....so if Nadal can duplicate last year's AO level, he may win the AO:)

Rafa & Sponsor - KIA

Kia asked an Australian artist, who is a big Rafa fan, to paint a mural of Rafa.

RNF, January 6, 2018:
¤¤ Melbourne’s been gifted with a beautiful mural of Rafa.

Danielle Weber is an incredible Australian artist based in Melbourne...Her latest work is a mural of Rafa and Kia Motors car at the Australian Open venue. The beautiful piece has taken about a week to complete and it’s a masterpiece.

Danielle Weber: "I was so excited when Kia asked me to paint this mural – I played tennis for over 10 years and was a ballgirl at the Australian Open for many years. I actually was a ballgirl for Rafa too, and he was always so lovely.
I do enjoy watching tennis and am a big fan of Rafa – I think he’s amazing on and off the court." ¤¤

His movement has improved significantly compared to Abu Dhabi, that is a good sign, meaning his injury is healing. The magical footwork is not fully there, but I put that down to lack of match play, it will only get better barring injury. He is now able to dance around his backhand better and has brought the inside out and inside in forehand back, which was missing against Anderson.

Not too thrilled with his court positioning, it is great for a five shot rally, but after that threshold, he is taking steps back, and allowing Kyrgios to use more angles. I expect him to fix that. Overall a positive step forward, hopefully he gets more rounded into form by first match at AO.

Nadal doubles highlights. Volleys seem perfect but the overhead he missed at match point in singles was one he would have made 99 out of 100 times in a real match situation

Yeah you can tell hes not going crazy chasing every ball down so not much to be taken from it. Just good to see him out there, and im sure he will be ready for an injury free AO.

Remember his exo before Wimbledon 18 his form looked awful and everyone was concerned, and look how well he played at W.
I expect him to go deep at AO, at least QF . Cant wait.
