December 26, 2019

Today, Rafa's sports centre hosted the 4th annual urban race, a fundraising event to raise money for a good cause.
The participants ran through the streets of Manacor. The race started and finished at the sports centre.
Adult runners could choose between two distances: 6 and 11 km. There were various distances for kids, depending on their age.

The proceeds from the event will go to the association Estel de Llevant, a non-profit organization committed to improving the living conditions of people affected by mental illness.

I've researched some Rafa related ATP Cup information, in particular his fixtures and schedule for the tournament:

Group stage, @ Perth:
Sat 4th Jan: vs Basilashvili
Mon 6th Jan: vs Cuevas
Wed 8th Jan: vs Nishioka (Nishikori is unlikely to play due to injury issues)

Then, Rafa takes a 4 hour flight from Perth to Sydney, mid tournament...

Knock-out, @ Sydney:
QF Fri 10th Jan, SF 11th Jan, F Sun 12th Jan

This is assuming he doesn't play any doubles. Group stage matches are relatively straightforward apart from Basilashvili.
In terms of the way the matches are spread, it's most similar to Indian Wells/Miami, maximum of 6 matches over 9 days. Except the 4 hour flight midway through which is annoying.

Award

L'Équipe, a French nationwide daily sports newspaper, named Rafa the 2019 Champion of Champions in the world category.

The newspaper appoints the best international male and female athlete every year. Rafa received the honorary title for the fourth time. He also won it in 2010, 2013 and 2017. Only Usain Bolt has received the prize more often (five times).

"It is a great honor, I am very grateful for this. Also because this prize comes from France, which is after Spain the most important country in my career. It will be difficult to match Bolt. But I am also very happy that I have won it four times," said Rafa.

Award & Interview

Rafa was interviewed by L'Équipe in connection with receiving the 2019 Champion of Champions award from the newspaper.
He was asked a question about playing at the Paris 2024 Olympics. Rafa replied: "Logic would make me say that I will not be there. But logic isn't to be trusted. If you'd have told me 5 years ago that I would have this season in 2019, I would have said it was impossible. And, for sure, if at the end of 2009 I was asked if I would still be playing at the beginning of 2020, I would have said no. So logic..." (Translated from French by Kristel.)

Stay strong and believe in yourself, Rafa! :)

Do us everyone think it is good idea Rafa plays ATP Cup? Doesn’t sound like it will be too stressful and good practice for AO no? Maybe some easy points for ranking? Or is there another way of looking at this?

Abu Dhabi wasn't enough preparation, so might as well play the ATP Cup :)
I see no negative in this.

Rafa was chosen as the best Spanish male athlete of 2019 by Agencia EFE, the major multimedia news agency in Spanish and the world's fourth largest wire service after the Associated Press, Reuters, and Agence France-Presse.

Rafa was voted the athlete of the decade in a poll run by Spanish daily sports newspaper Marca.

Marca, Dec.27, 2019:

¤¤ Nadal beats Messi to be crowned the decade's top sportsperson

The world's greatest athletes have gone head to head and Rafael Nadal has come out on top as the pick of the bunch from the last decade.

Nadal faced Lionel Messi in a colossal final, but it was the Spaniard who came out as a clear winner. MARCA readers voted in huge numbers - with almost 160,000 votes being counted - and Nadal took 62 percent of the vote to Messi's 38 percent.
The tennis star had beaten Eliud Kipchoge, then Cristiano Ronaldo in the quarter-finals before long-standing rival Roger Federer in the semi-finals to face Messi in the final of the competition to work out the top sportsperson of the decade. Messi had to beat off competition from Michael Phelps in the semi-finals after seeing off Marc Marquez in the quarter-finals and Novak Djokovic in the previous round.

Nadal has enjoyed a remarkable 2019, winning at Roland Garros, the US Open and the Davis Cup, as well as claiming the world No.1 spot. The last 10 years have been impressive for him too, winning practically everything on offer this decade. He lifted eight Roland Garros titles, four US Opens, Wimbledon, an Olympic gold medal [in doubles], two Davis Cups and a host of other tournaments too.¤¤

This would have to be the most injury-free and well-prepared Rafa has ever been in Australia, and probably the most confident he's ever been too :)
Or the most confident he's been since Australia 2011 when he'd won 3 slams in a row heading into the AO....

Does anyone know how to insert a picture onto here from an ANDROID device using an image from GOOGLE as the source.

I can do it on my iPhone easy enough by holding down and then clicking copy and just posting the link into the picture tab at the top. It doesn't work that for some reason with my android. Im using Google chrome on the android but I dont know if that affects it

Rafa & Sponsor - Banco Santander

Rafa signed a long-term sponsorship deal with Banco Santander, a Spanish multinational commercial bank and financial services company based in Madrid and Santander in Spain.

The Banco Santander website, 31 December 2019:
¤¤ Rafa Nadal to become ambassador for Santander

Banco Santander signed a long-term agreement with tennis player Rafa Nadal, who will become an ambassador for the Group.

Rafa Nadal, who is currently ranked as the ATP’s world number one tennis player, is considered the best Spanish athlete of all time and one of the best in the world. He has won 19 Grand Slam tournaments, five Davis Cups, two Olympic gold medals [singles & doubles] and the Prince of Asturias award [Spain's annual award].

Nadal, who was previously linked to the Group for several years through a partnership with Banesto, will represent the bank in various campaigns and events in Spain and other countries, as well as Santander Private Banking globally.

Rafa Nadal said: “I’m very happy to come back to the Santander family and become its ambassador. It is very exciting to share again their winning spirit and the values of daily effort and willingness to fight for every point to achieve the goals we set. And, of course, to show that how we achieve our goals is as important as reaching them.” ¤¤

Sorry to be a nuisance if this question has been answered before, but can anyone clarify how many points Rafa should gain in the ATP Cup if he wins the matches he is expected to win?

This tournament is going to be tricky to keep tabs on - groups, cities, points - but I think it goes like this:
Potential wins - group stage
Nishioka 25
Basilashvili 50
Cuevas 50

It’s impossible to guess who his opponents might be in the later stages, but they’re likely to be ranked top 10 or top 25, in which case QF 120/100, SF 180/140, F 250/200, so I think Rafa’s maximum would be 675. (Novak’s would be 700.)

ATP Cup Part 3

Or there’s a nicer chart on Wikipedia!

If Rafa wasn’t playing the ATP Cup he would be practising so he might as well play proper matches. He used to play Doha in the 1st week in January.
